General :: Setting Up Internet And Opening .DEB

Dec 29, 2010

I have installed Debian on my computer but am having trouble setting up my wireless Internet. Under my network settings there's only one connection: Ethernet. how to create a new (wireless) connection.

Another thing is that I can't seem to open .deb files. The archive manager says that it's not supported. But I can't seem to find the dselect to open those files either.

One more question: how can I enter commands through the promp(t)? I've read all over the Internet that I can enter in commands, but I haven't found where or how.

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Static IP And Opening Ports?

Aug 30, 2010

I am trying to open a tunnel for a friend of mine who's isp has blocked a bunch of webpages, so I was thinking I would learn how to since it might come in handy in the future Anyway, so I looked at a couple of videos about going in to network settings and changing the setting to manual and write down the desired IP (in my case 192.168.0.137). Then I went into my router (it's a D-link DI 524) and tried adding my static IP as the DMZ computer. I then restarted, everything looked fine, the router saved the settings and the eth0 still hade the information saved so I wanted to try it out. I just googled "try my ports" and I found a website called [URL]...But no ports worked for me.. I tried double checking everything, checking for errors. I couldn't find anything so I'm guessing you might have a clue!

EDIT: It seemed I had to have a program that actually used the port for it to work.. It's working anyway, so if you could move it to [SOLVED] I'd be happy

Ubuntu Servers :: Secure Fileserver Over Internet - Opening Samba Ports Make Default Particularly Vulnerable To Penetration?

May 26, 2011

I'd like to set up a fileserver for myself and a few trusted individuals. I'm computer savvy and I use various linux servers frequently for work, but this is my first time trying to setup my own. Is it possible to have a Samba server setup so it is both secure and facing the Internet? Two questions:

Will opening Samba ports make my default Ubuntu server particularly vulnerable to penetration? More than having an SSH server running? Does Samba/ can Samba be configured to encrypt traffic or is it sent plainly? If so, does Windows and Mac support this secure communication?

If not, what would you suggest? I'd like to achieve something like a network drive and at a difficulty level that my parents could use this if they really wanted to. I will be storing things like financial information and tax returns, but no weapons-grade secrets.

Setting up an Internet proxy In the past I had set a computer to act as an Internet proxy. This would be multihomed, and running dansguardian, tinyproxy and firehol. I would like (the admin) to be able to see in which sites users go and have a lot of control on access..

I know the it is not the router because I use my PS3 and it worked fine. I spend like an hour just trying to get the connection but can't figure out the Internet problem. What I did to get the connection is copy the ip address, Mac, and etc. from the PS3. Then I made a new connection and put the data in the IPV4 settings and it got a connection but I'm not sure if I did that right or just got lucky

Networking :: Setting Up Internet Connection With DHCP On Dreamlinux

Aug 30, 2010

I have tested several Linux Distros over the last weeks, and with all of them my DSL connection have been working out of the box (for intance Mandriva, Ubuntu, Mint). But it does not work on Dreamlinux, neither on Live CD or now where Dreamlinux is installed on my harddisk.

According to the guidelines provided by my Internet provider I need to use TCP/IP and activate DHCP. And make sure that PPPoE is not activated.

I see nowhere I can do this in Dreamlinux. In the controle panel i can run Wicd. Then I can chose to de-activate Wicd - this gives me an option of entering Adress, Networking mask, Gatway and Nameserver - for static ip it says - and this is the opposit of DHCP, right??

SO - what to do? Should I get a debian package or something? (Dreamlinux is using debian packages, as far as I could see)

Server :: Setting A Proxy Thunderbird And Other Non Internet Browser?

Aug 5, 2010

I have to set up a proxy for my work's network. No computer except the proxy has a direct internet connection. The proxy will NOT be transparent so it authenticates with Active Directory and allows or denies pages. The squid proxy is up, and working accordingly, denying and allowing what's needed to who's needed. BUT! Thunderbird and Outlook didn't work, so in less than 10 minutes I was forced to fall back.

I read googling a lot, and searching a bit here about socks, which seems to be what I need but also that squid is already a socks proxy. Web pages were the concern, it's not needed that other stuff is authenticated, it might as well be transparent for Outlook, Thunderbird and other programs *for example, it's not needed to block a Warcraft III game, though, allowing it explicitly is not the point either* but as of now, none can connect *haven't actually tried Warcraft though, but stuff like Adobe's updater didn't work either and I recall someone mentioned Windows Live messenger didn't either* The Squid Proxy is a CentOS.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Can't Connect To Internet After Setting Static IP For Samba

May 17, 2010

I recently used this process to connect my Samba network to be able to access and allow Windows XP machines to access my computer on my office network.

For various reasons, all the XP computers on the network are set to fixed (do we say static?) IP addresses with manual DNS. Hence I realised during the Samba setup that I had to set a static IP on my Ubuntu machine similar to my Windows static IP's (ie 192.168.10.?) in order to be able to see the Windows share PC's properly.

Once I set my Ubuntu machine to static IP of 192.168.10.3 with subnet of 255.255.255.0 and gateway of 192.168.0.1 then I was able to access and be accessed by PC's on the network. However I couldn't access the internet after this. I input the DNS server in the edit connections as you can see per the attachment. All these settings (except the IP address obviously) were all now exactly the same as the PC machines, and I thought I'd now be able to access the windows network, as well as have access to the internet, however, even though my wired network is connected there is still no internet access.

I'm using the GUI under network connections to make all these changes if that is important. I can't understand why this doesn't work?
