General :: Set Device For Program In PulseAudio?

Aug 29, 2010

In computer I have 2 sound devices.

When I run some program (let's say Skype) I can (using "pavucontrol" -> "PulseAudio Volume Control") setup so that this application will use given device for playback or recording.

But - in the Playback/Recording tabs application is visible only if it is currently doing something (playback or recording).

How can I set device per application, but before the application starts recording or playing sounds?

General :: Changing Default Audio Device In Pulseaudio?

Jun 5, 2011

I would like to use HDMI on my graphic card for audio output. ALSA shows it as a card with 4 devices and I can get sound through one of them (the other three are different channels, perhaps? I have only stereo output connected). Although Pulseaudio has the right card set as default, it seems to me that it plays on a wrong device. Pacmd shows that the sink has parameter alsa.device set to the first device listed by ALSA, but I can get sound only from the second one.How can I force Pulseaudio to use another device of the same card as a default output?

I had managed to get rid of it in Fedora 10 with the command: su -c "yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio pulseaudio" I just don't want to have to deal with Pulseaudio anymore. It does not like my sound card and gets in the way. Is there a Linux distribution that does not use Pulseaudio ?

Fedora :: Using The Pulseaudio Device In Mythtv?

May 31, 2010

I have a fedora13 version that upgraded mythtv to 0.23. Since that time, I've had sound problems. Mostly the sound has stopped working completely, but works with all other applications. Every once in a while the sound will work.

My sound device is ALSA:default and I have experimentally allow pulseaudio in my environment. This worked fine before the mythtv upgrade. I tried using the pulseaudio device in mythtv, but it works really poorly (lots of loud static).

Fedora :: PulseAudio USB Device Default Behavior Wrong

Feb 8, 2010

Based on my experience with external devices such as USB microphones and USB speakers, PulseAudio always defaults to the motherboard/built-in device rather than any USB device. My expectation is that if someone is using an external USB device to supplement what is on the motherboard/built-in, they are going to be doing that to overcome a limitation of the motherboard/built-in devices, and therefore it is logical that when external USB devices are present on a system, these be the default. (For example, I want sound from my beefy set of Logitech USB speakers and not from the tinny notebook speakers).

It is no problem for me to manually set/reset the active device, however I believe that the average user expects to plug in a USB microphone or speakers and assume that the system will automatically change the default. Furthermore without this action, some users not used to the Linux audio settings will be led to believe that the USB devices are not supported, when in fact it is simply a problem that they have not been selected for use rather than the motherboard/built-in devices.I think this warrants me entering a bug report, but I wanted to hear what others think before proceeding to enter a bug report. Is the default behavior of PulseAudio towards USB devices wrong? What do you think?

Ubuntu Servers :: Program/Process Route To Specific Network Device?

Jul 30, 2010

Is there a way to bind specific programs to specific network devices (not IPs, since I have dynamic IPs)?

For example, I wish for irssi to route through eth0 and w3m to route through eth1. Keep in mind these devices have dynamic IPs, so I cannot attached them to an IP.

The solution cannot be accomplished through route since route pivots on IPs not devices.

Software :: Horelease /dev Entry Of Unplugged Storage Device While A Program Has A File Open

Nov 6, 2009

I plug a USB device, it gets a /dev entry, e.g. sdf, i mount its filesystem, then some program opens a file on this filesystem. I unplug this device, its /dev entry disappears, but if i replug this device again, it gets another name - sdg.

How can i force the program to close the file so the filesystem is ready to be unmounted without using "lazy unmount" to release the device name, BUT so that the program doesn't crash after trying to make I/O to this file, and, of course, without having to kill the program?

General :: Pulseaudio Selectively Detect Sound Hardware?

Nov 2, 2010

I am running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04. I have been having some problems recently with Pulseaudio, which has traditionally worked fine for me on this netbook actually. Specifically, when I boot the computer, the system will play the "Bongo roll" sound at the GNOME login screen, telling me that sound hardware has been detected and should be working fine.

Yet when I log into the Netbook interface, my volume notification icon has the three blank lines indicating my session does not have access to the sound hardware. Nor do any of the built-in Sound preference panels detect my hardware, only registering dummy output. Finally, the (hopefully) deprecated PulseAudio Device Manager and Volume Control applications also fail to detect my hardware.

However, this problem is inconsistent! It will only happen on certain boots, though the number seems to be hovering around 75% of boots where pulseaduio fails to load correctly. The daemon/service is running, and restarting it only returns:

jmmcl2@unteer:~$ sudo service pulseaudio restart PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions ask again, why is my Pulseaudio being so selective about detecting my sound hardware in Ubuntu 10.04?

General :: New Distribution (kde4 With Pulseaudio) - Update To New Versions

Apr 30, 2011

I have tried a lot of distributions, and have been using Ubuntu for the last year or so. However I would really like to use a good KDE4 distribution. I do have some stringent requirements though.

1- Easy and quick to get it up and going.
2- It needs to use pulse (or at least very easy to add it and get it working). I know a lot of people don't like pulse, but I can't do what I need to do without it.
3- it needs to have a large repository (like ubuntu, debian, or any major distribution). It also has to have a good package management system, again like ubuntu, debian, but not like slackware.
4- I would like it to be easy to update to new versions. I don't care if it is a rolling release or not, but I don't want to have to install it all over again each year.
5- I want it to be a stable system, not too cutting edge, but also not too old.
6- It would be nice if it had multimedia codecs, etc included like mint. But it is ok as long as it is not too difficult to get them installed later.

Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive. Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).
