General :: Set Totem Subtitle To "None" Or Remove Subtitles From Mp4?
Sep 19, 2010
I've transcoded a number of videos into mp4 which include subtitles. I was using VLC before which did not show these by default but now I want to use Totem.
Totem has the option to turn these off (change subtitles to none from auto) but I cannot find a way to set this globally (and it doesn't remember the setting for each file).
Is there a way to set "never show subtitles by default" globally or is there a way to delete the subtitles from the mp4 file? (They are not rendered on the video; they can be turned off).
Otherwise I may have to start my transcoding from scratch! (Disabling any subtitles).

Is there any way to position subtitles in Totem in a bottom on the black border of the 16:9 movie when showing in the full screen of 4:3 monitor?Or not necessarely in fullscreen, but in a window where black borders are on the top and underneath the actual video frames.
Now always the subtitles covers part of the video on the bottom, which is a shame as there would be empty space underneath also.
The same question for VLC.
Subtitles, would be in the external file.
And I am not looking a solution which would need transencoding the video file.
btw, for GNOME Mplayer, the solution is to put "-vf expand=:-100::2" into Edit/Preferences/Mplayer/Extra_options_to_Mplayer

I'm really new to all these *nix stuffs but I already likes the software, the community and even the manuals) Can anyone help me with subject? I like watching all these good shows airing through bittorrent and on-line hostings but I don't know English as well as I think so I also need to download a lot of subtitles. Is there any media player for *nix with built-in online subtitle search, download and open?

I have a desktop hooked up to a router and plugged into my TV. I like to run Totem and have videos running full screen on my TV. I would like to control that Totem using my laptop (connected to the same router over wifi). How would I go about doing that? I connected to my desktop using SSH and tried to send signals to Totem, but nothing worked. I tried using VNC, and that was ineffective as well.

I have a table-top DVD player that can play DVDs and DIVX video files.
BTW, I know how to make Divx files using ffmpeg, mencoder and HandBrakeCLI.
What I don't know how to do is add the subtitles from the DVD to the Divx files. I want the option to turn on and off the subtitles from the divx file. Is this possible?

I'm using Xfce 4.8, which now provides built-in samba browing in thunar. This works like a charm. I can browse a samba share (external HD connecter to router via USB). Yet it appears to me now that the support is limited to thunar. I mean double clicking on a file allows me to open/edit that file if and only if the software itself has samba support. In practice, double-clicking on a movie opens it with vlc thanks to vlc's own smb support. Even then, I can't find a way to add the subtitle file. I reckon that to use the share transparently, I would need to mount it the "mount" way. Either on a mount point like /mnt/hard_drive or something like .gvfs/hard_drive.
Is my understanding correct ? Is that my only option? Considering the disk won't be switched on at startup, fstab is not the solution. Would gigolo be the right choice? I spent some time trying gigolo a few days ago, following an easy tuto found on the web and it didn't work as expected. If needed I could give it another try.

I'm using Handbrake 0.9.5 for encoding and I'd like to add a "hard-subtitle" to a video : the subtitle has to be a part of the video. I've seen on makeuseof.com that we could hard-sub a video thanks to the "Forced only" option. On Ubuntu 10.04 amd64, I don't have any checkbox for this option while importing SRT file. I've got the checkbox for "subtitles" I add by clicking on the "+ Subtitle" button, but it seems to be useless (I had a video_name.srt next to my video_name.m4v video file to re-encode). Is Handbrake now supporting only soft subbing ?

I've decided to start backing up my dvd collection. I want to extract all of the audio, video, and subtitle streams individually (from the main movie title only). Then for convenience and usability I want to put them all in a .mkv container. How can I do this and with which programs? ffmpeg, vlc, mplayer? If I can do this all at once, that's fine. But I don't want to get the streams out of sync.

At the Command Line Prompt I am able to start some Applications (such as openoffice.org or evolution) and the command line prompt re-appears after program is launched and I can continue working in that Terminal. However, other Applications, such as Totem or Blackboard will launch from the Terminal but the Prompt does not re-appear. Where Totem is concerned I get a message stating "sha module is deprecated use hashlib module instead". Where Blackboard is concerned the command line does not reappear. I have to use Ctrl + C to get the command line back but this closes the application as well! Or, I have to open a new Terminal. why some applications will start from the command line and others do not? How do you get the prompt back (other than q or Ctrl + c) thanks to all and kindest regards ( I am using Ubuntu 9.04)

I'm trying to play idx/sub subtitles with an avi movie. I have previously used these on Windows, but no clue how to use them in Ubuntu. I know I can convert them to srt, but that requires OCR which (from experience) makes a bunch of mistakes, so I don't want that. So far I've tried Totem and Gnome MPlayer. Is there any way to achieve this?

I am using ubuntu 8.04. I played an mp3 in totem & meanwhile moved that file to another location. Still I can move slider in totem to rewind or forward the song. Only after the song has been played completely I get message 'location not found'. Does that mean totem copies song into RAM so that it does not have to trouble hard disk for access during entire duration ?

Debian Lenny Gnome
Intel Celeron, 1100MHz, 512k
Earlier today I downloaded a video of a Mozilla Project preview, in MP4. Of course, it won't play. All I get is the audio, and this error:
Quote:
"An error occurred. The playback of this movie requires a H.264 decoder plugin which is not installed."
I put in some time, researching this issue, trying to figure it all out. I guess I'm looking in the wrong places. Is this a proprietary format issue? Also, when I was overdosing on XP, my media drug of choice was Klite mega codec pack (from codecs.com). It literally plays every media format, audio and video. In addition to fixing the above issue, can somebody guide me to an equivalent player with codecs for [insert any media type here]? I have several Terrabytes of various video and audio files, and prefer to not convert them all.
