I've been messing around to try and play runescape (Java based) on my laptop. I run Lucid Lynx (in dualboot with vista) and have Java installed. Now I'm trying to get Runescape to work so I have even more reason to ban Vista completely. So I installed Java, and tried in firefox (3.6.6). It loads the log in, I log in, but then I get a grey screen with "applet started" in the status bar but nothing more.
When that didn't work I did some googling and tried it with SeaMonkey(2.0.4) - same result. Would another browser help or is there something else wrong?
10.04 was working fine till one day I boot up, and there's a weird grey screen. I hear login sound, but nothing is displayed on the screen, it just goes grey with weird shapes and sometimes color stripes. Sort of like grey screen of death...
I thought I would recover my nvidia drivers, but I get the same grey screen when booting from Live CD also. Even from ubuntu recovery remix. Ubuntu Live CD launches, I get a menu, but when it starts to boot, grey screen again.
we installed Ubuntu Server on a VPS machine then installed VPS desktop after reading this tut markus.revti.com/2009/08/installing-vnc-remote-desktop-on-ubuntu-linux-vps. I'm able to connect to the VPS but all i see is a grey screen.
I am wondering if you can play Runescape on Puppy Linux(Slackware) with Java, Flash, and the plug-ins are all installed, and i use a Live Usb. Is this possible? Recommended Requirements(and please don't write the bare minimum)
My sound on Runescape stops and picks up, is very choppy and annoying. I'm using Debian "Lenny". Sound on everything else works just fine (Flash, VLC, etc...)
I am trying to install on my Powerbook G4 version 9.04. IT went well and I rebooted it boots up and appears to be loading... In fact says "Loading, please wait"
But the screen begins slowly to fade to white until I can't see anything.
There is one error that might be related I noticed "Radeonfb invalid rom contents".
When I close my laptop and open it the screen become grey and blotchy with almost an argyle pattern. This has only started happening after I configured the usb ports to work in my VM. My startup screen also says something about a usb problem, and S for skip and M to manually fix it but I have had no problems with my usb. Oh except for my computer won't start
I just installed Moonlight but except for the clock that starts running, buffering and connecting to the video server nothing else works. The screen stays grey and there is no sound. I thought it might work when I install Java applet, but also that doesn't fix.
I just tried installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto my Playstation 3. I installed the otheros.bld fine (which I downloaded via a link provided on the OpenSUSE website). I then inserted my 32-bit Gnome CD for installation and restarted my system. Then on startup, a blue/grey screen appears. Here are the links to the screenshot (sorry for poor quality):

[Bottom Half] [url]
As you can see, the only option is for me to select the gameboot, which obviously takes me back to the Playstation XMB. There are keys at the bottom of the screen, but this is only to change the resolution. So I have no option to install the OS.
Does anybody know why this screen appears and have any ideas on how I can get around this problem to install SUSE onto my Playstation?
I'd like to install Fedora 14 64bit as a dual boot on an existing win 7 32bit system. When I boot with the Live CD, after selecting "boot" in the Fedora boot selection menu, I get a grey screen with a white cursor, and the system freezes. I checked the Live CD on my laptop and it worked perfectly.

So after I went to OMG ubuntu site and downloaded "complex shutdown" since it looked useful and I needed it I installed it..but it doesnt seem to start up for some reason so when I went to uninstall it software center went "blank" just a grey screen with the black toolbar
1st install no good, but did second to fix some possible mistakes.Booted to login prompt and then, after login, nothing until entered telinit 4, then scrambled screen, then changed to probably the normal screen background of grey/white with numerous white globes, but nothing else and cursor moved, but wouldn't function on occasions also got box with login name, password locations.Got message of "Display not set" and that the problem was so complex it couldn't be explained with these minimal resources.Did third full install and changed screen option from my known resolution with framebuffer, to safe standard, but no improvement.Lilo was installed to MBR, and had 2 partitions flagged as bootable (/ and /boot).Found nothing on forums or FAQ, but suppose could give change of kernel a shot, but as used what cd started with, that seems unlikely.
I am a NOOB and I have just installed Fedora 14 as Ubuntu 10.04 crashed with low graphics mode and now no version of Ubuntu will install, anyway thats another issue. I decided to try fedora as it seems clean and very easy install but it seems to have some share of issues that I am discoving. To the point, Fedora 14 Network Manager shows the wireless tab as greyed out, I have googled about it but I am unable to fix this issue. I would be very grateful for anyones help as this computer has to stay connected to the cable until I am able to fix this.Computer is Dell laptop 1gb vr, 4gm ram, with Belkin n+ router
I use Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, live CD install, and I can't play runescape (or such) with the only available java plugin. In firefox, doesn't even finish updating runescape. In opera, when I use the member's login, the applet just shuts down. Known problem in opera: The page has to refresh to get rid of the ads when you sign in as member, I think the plugin doesn't like refreshing while logged in.
When playing the Java based Game "Runescape", I am able to get the game music, but absolutely no sound effects or scenery sound. I have checked that all are at maximum volume, my sound works for everything else I do in total - this includes skype, ..... and minecraft - but not for the sounds in runescape.
I can copy and paste into a terminal, but that is about it.
$ env | grep TERM TERM=xterm COLORTERM=gnome-terminal
I had to edit both my .muttrc and my vim colorscheme to change the background color from black to none in order to get a proper black background (or, more accurately, to retain the terminal's default black background). Setting it to black resulted in a dark grey background. This only happens with gnome-terminal; konsole, xterm and rxvt are fine.
I came to know about this bug or something in Ubuntu only in karmic version which slows down file transfer I've used ubuntu from version 8.10 and having considerable speeds like 3-4Mbps sometimes 2.5 to 2. Even though very less its seems okay for me transfering a big 5G file or a movie to external Hdd without stucking and allowing me to do other work. Now in karmic the transfer rate is of no change but its stucks ,fades into grey and hangs . It's not allowing me to do any other work like browsing and it stucks in mouse cliks and movements. I never noticed this kind of behavior in Jaunty ,Intrepid even though transfer rate is less.
It really took me more than 30 min to transfer 4.5GB iso image to external WD 40GB HDD . Its so odd and frustrating . Many people to whom i've introduced Linux and Ubuntu specially were complaining and some already went back to vista and xp.
I have a normal ubuntu installation installed on my netbook.Annoyingly for some reason Firefox regularly goes grey on the background, I am unable to get any input to it. After a few seconds the colour returns and functionality returns. This does not happen after a period of inactivity so I have no idea why this happens or for what reason.I've seen a similar post dated 2008 so it is surprising it is still occurring.
While using FireFox the application will sometimes turn a shade of grey. Almost as if the entire application is locked. Most times if I wait for a while it will "colorize" itself after a moment or two and I'm right back to doing whatever I was doing.,I was just wondering if anybody could tell me why this happens?
I have noticed that the AutoTen program does the same thing while an application is being installed. The terminal-style window will open and start doing all the important stuff, and the GUI will grey out until it's done... I just don't understand why FireFox would be doing this...
When in Home Folder or working Inkscape, the window I'm working in goes grey and the programs freeze.Only that program or folder or if I have two folders open then when the home folder freezes so will the other folders, but not programs.
I have installed Virtualbox-4.0 as well as the extension pack using the instruction here: I have also put my user in the 'vboxusers' group. But the usb-2.0 items are grey out and disabled.
Well, the problem here seems to have started after I installed Gnome color changer and followed some directions on gnome-looks.org to install a certain theme (This one). Well after a while of messing around, and this not happening (I was never able to install the skin), I rebooted. When the desktop loaded, the background was covered by a big gray rectangle that covers the desktop. I say it covers because I can still see the original wallpaper through the transparent panels. Also, when I try to change the wallpaper, the computer becomes unresponsive and I have to force it to restart.
I was changing some settings in ATI Catalyst Control Center on my laptop; when I had my cursor on the contrast slider, the mouse slipped and slided the marker to the far left, removing all contrast; now, everything is dark grey (once I'm at the login screen, the very first bootup screens work) and I am unable to use my laptop.
I just upgraded to 11.04, and I'm having a recurring problem with the menu bar. You can no longer see it, instead it's all black with some strange grey lines. It still works, you just can't see anything.
This has been bothering me for a very long while now, but not enough for me to bother asking about it. I've looked up about the grey background in the tray in lucid, but I can't find anything where all my icons have the wrong background. This happened after I upgraded from karmic, and the problem only exists with the new themes.
I tried changing my tooltip background to a lighter color so that I can read the font, or to something that has some contrast with the font, but I have been unable to do so. What am I missing? Seems like a rather intuitive operation. I haven't been able to do so as of yet. Could I please get some help with this.I went to Settings > Appearance > Colors, and changed the setting. But, the change was not reflected in my windows. How come?
I am having the problem enabling Bluetooth on my Dell studio 1555. When I start System->Preference-Bluetooth Manager, I get message Connection to Bluez failed : Bluez daemon is not running, blueman-manager cannot continue.

I have reinstalled, removed rebooted and installed bluez, bluez-utils, Blueman, bluetooth number of times now. Two attachments are included, BlueZ output screen Bluetooth output screen Bluetooth works perfect, when I boot lucid using live CD, So I guess there is some problem with the installation. I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.4. It never worked with 9.10 and its continuing the same way.
After a restart, I see bluetooth icon, but its grey all the time. Two more screen shots.. Bluetooth output screen (Turn on) Bluetooth output screen (Turned on) sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth status * bluetooth is running
