General :: To Start On Triple Boot Acer Aspire One Netbook
May 13, 2011
I currently have an Acer Aspire One netbook 120GB drive which came with Linpus lite preloaded. I have set-up dual boot a year or so ago. It now dual boots to either Linpus or Vista (yes I know!) via the Linpus grub.conf ( I got the instructions I think from here: [URL] I want to get the latest Ubuntu 11.04 build on this as a third boot option. If this work OK I may ditch the Linpus or Vista build at some point. So I've used Gparted on a USB drive to setup up three extended Logical Partitions (sda5, 6 and 7).
I then loaded Ubuntu s/w via an external drive with
/boot on 100MB /sda5
Swap on 1GB /sda6
/ on the 40GB+ /sda7
When I was asked for the bootloader location in the Ubuntu install gui I chose /sda5 (out of complete ignorance) All fine at this point. What do I have to get the linpus lite /boot/grub/grub.conf to see and start ubuntu?? Or is there something else I need to do?? Also, how does Ubuntu know which swap partition to use, as there is already one for the linpus lite install.

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

I have been using my Acer Aspire One Netbook, with Linux Lite v1.0.13.E as loaded on purchase, happily for a year or so. Yesterday, when I clicked on the Browser picture to open up Firefox, nothing happened. I can't find how to access anything which will let me check if the icon has lost a link. I have looked on the File Manager and can see the .mozilla folder but don't know what to look for, nor what to do from here.
I have now managed to add the sub-menu which was linked to here: [URL] as a way to Install apps. I can now use this directory to try and open Firefox Web Browser - I then get the message "Failed to execute default web browser Input/output error.

after messing with fstab + mtab, my aspire one netbook completely failed , so i rebooted using a live USB. My desktop and default settings were restored. When i tried to install firefox 3 (default browser is firefox 2 ), yum hangs and refuses to do anything. I tried deleting and reinstalling yum, and it was mostly successful until i tried the "make" command which according to bash does not exist. how to install make without using yum?

I have followed the directions to install the Netbook Edition onto my Acer Aspire One via usb drive. When I created the USB using the Universal USB Installer app, I created a 1GB persistence on my 4GB USB. I now want to install rather than run from the thumb drive, except when I get to partition area, it's showing no drives at all. I had XP, but I'd like to use the entire disk for UNE now. how to get it to install?

I've just worked out how to get the wireless card working with an Acer Aspire D260 wireless card to work.
Enter terminal command;
sudo apt-get install wifi-radar
Then reboot ubuntu 10.04 after it has installed, network manager should now detect wireless networks in range and allow connection, right click network manager icon and select "Enable Wireless" or "Disable wireless" as required to turn on or off. So many others have had problems getting the wifi to work with Acer Aspire D260 netbooks and ubuntu 10.04.

STEP 1) Install Slackware 13.1 (everything works out of the box*) Gotcha: 3d isn't enabled in X Fix: Yes it is... run glxgears from a console or run glxinfo | grep render.
Gotcha: No CD drive to install from Fix 1: Get a usb CDROM drive Fix 2: Boot off of a thumbdrive using the usbboot.img (found on disc 6) Gotcha: Card Reader (ENE Technology) doesn't work Fix: You have to use the MMC driver-modprobe mmc_core modprobe sdhci modprobe mmc_blockIt should now show up in dmesg and /dev/mmcblk0p1 should be created if it is an SD card. NOTE: SD Card portion works using SDHCI driver. NO DRIVERS for XD and MS cards yet. *Card reader is gimped due to ENE Technology being evil.

I just tried to install ubuntu 10.04 to the hard drive of my netbook as i prefer it greatly over the standard linpus one. The operating system booted fine from a bootable usb drive and so i thought if i install it it should run.
so...i got to work installing the system...it completed and asked me to restart, which i did. From there the boot up screen comes on for the pc.....the one where it says press f2 for setup and f12 for boot priority....then goes to a black screen. on this black screen i have a message which says...
"error: no such device: 992fddd7-54c1-45e0-b990-7220c6fa9005 grub rescue>"

I have a new Acer Aspire One, model D250-1958. It uses the Atheros AR928X. I've tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04, as well as the conventional Ubuntu. Everything works beautifully, except no wireless. The netbook picks up the signal, but when I provide the Key it fails to connect, and eventually prompts me for the key again.
I've tried to research this on my own, but haven't found a solution. In particular, the solution reported by narnie for his Acer Aspire One D250-1584, <HERE>, didn't work for me.
I'd really like to get this working. The netbook will be much less useful if it can't make use of our wireless router.

Had the RC versions of 11.2 running on my laptop but now the release version is out X no longer installs properly, it gets so far through the installation but then goes to a black screen which is totally unresponsive. If I force a power-off/on it only comes up in text mode and I cannot get X to start automatically. I can get startx to work if I manually reconfigure sax2 using 0=radeon but no way can I get this to happen at startup. Seems a very retrograde situation and something that completely got past quality control.
Probably the end of my time with OpenSuse having been a user for over 5 years, at least Ubuntu installs straight in with no problems whatsoever - exactly what I would have expected from OpenSuse.

I have been customizing my 10.10 NBR to my personal liking.I have already disabled the default Unity "experience" and enabled Gnome.However I have hit a bit of a tough spot with Compiz. It will install, and it appears I enable it in the Visual Effects menu, but I do not think it actually is enables and once I close the dialog it reverts back to the "none" option in Visual Effects.What I dont understand is that Compiz worked fine on 9.10 NBR.I would just give up, but I really want window previews with the Talika plugin.My netbook is a Acer Aspire One D150.

I have an H340 Home Server, and I really want to eliminate any Windows on it.Having read what people have written here, I installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 on an empty drive via an existing machine. Then I removed the supplied 1 TB drive with Windows Server on it from the H340, inserted the new Ubuntu server drive.Now I can power up the machine, the lights come on, the network light flickers with activity, and...
Well, I am at a bit of a loss at what to "do" now. The H340 is connected to a router, just like my existing machine, so it gets an IP address from the DHCP server in the router. How do I actually connect to the H340? I really don't know. Do I go "Places->Network"? or "Places->Connect to Server"? Or do I do a remote desktop connection?
When it is powered up, how does it start without a user doing a login? There is no keyboard, screen, etc. Only the network cable. I have simply never had to deal with a Server before, so I need some hand-holding for a while. I have Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and Windows 7 dual boot.

I recently bought a netbook on which Windows 7 Start Edition was installed. I partitioned the disk to install 2 other linux distributions : Backtrack 4 and Debian Lenny. Here is my partition scheme :
Disk /dev/sdb: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xc6a9bf3e
[Code]...
Partition table entries are not in disk order During both of the installs, I chose to install Grub. Unfortunately, when I start my netbook, it launches Windows 7 automatically and I do not see grub...

I was using Ubuntu 10.04 for the last 6 months, recently I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, it worked fine for around four days, Now the problem is When I power up the system using power button, the system do not power up, I tried to boot from cd both Ubuntu and Windows XP, none works, I tried to go to BIOS setup using F2 and F12 (Acer Aspire 5920 model laptop), but i could not, just a blank display appears, here are some symptoms:
1. When powered on - LED indicating pocressor operation glows for a moment and disappears, few other LEDS indicating batter, music play, forward,stop LEDs glows as as usual,
2. Only blank screen appears
3. tried to switch on the wifi and bluetooth buttons, both did not glow indicating it is not working.
4. Paculiar thing is this symptons appears first time, suddenly all stop glowing and after 2 to 3 seconds again the system comes to this state and remains forever.
Questions:
1. Is it possible to be hardware problem?
2. If it a software problem the suspect can be Ubuntu 10.10 version?

I have F11 running on my Acer laptop and I'd like to install F13 on a newly created partition.I have downloaded the DVD install a couple of days ago and tried to boot it using different options, but always failed. Below my attempts:
1) first option (Install or upgrade): it took a looooong time (like 4 or 5 hours) to get to the Loading vmlinuz message; after a couple more hours it was still there (with 4 or 5 dots more) and I decided that enough was enough;
2) second option (basic video driver): I tried it with and without the nomodeset option and in both cases the Loading vmlinuz message was immediate, but couldn't get past it;
3) first option (Install or upgrade) with the nomodeset option: again the Loading vmlinuz message was immediate, it added up to 10 or 11 dots and then hung;
4) I also tried to boot the same DVD on another laptop (just to rule out media problems) and quickly reached the first install screen, so the DVD is ok I think.
Note that in ALL the above described attempts, when the boot process hang I see my HD led constantly on and also the DVD led flashing.

Similar problems to mine have popped up elsewhere, but none of the fixes seem to work (or I'm just too stupid). I tried to see what the people at Canonical and elsewhere came up with for Ubuntu 10.4 and, after the live USB checked out fine, I rather foolishly installed the OS on my Acer Aspire One D250 (1GB RAM), to run alongside Windows XP.
It booted up once, I think, and then no more. I believe the problem MIGHT be the Broadcom WiFi stuff, but I'm not sure. Anyway, booting Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with a blinking cursor... which doesn't appear to go away. Recovery mode worked once or twice (had to use ACPI=OFF at least once), then no more. It leads to the same thing: that perpetually blinking cursor.
What I would like is either a fix to get Ubuntu 10.4 launched, or some way to remove the OS and restore my netbook back to what it was. Unfortunately, the MBR fixes that are posted all over cyberspace are useless, as my hidden partition doesn't contain the rtmbr.bin file it needs to work (don't ask me why--I've already posted that question at the AAO user forum). So it seems a fix to launch Ubuntu is the only solution, so that I can at least set grub to launch Windows XP rather than Ubuntu.

I have an Acer Aspire One and I would like to boot from an SCHD card installed into the system Expansion port. It works fine when used in a USB stick. When I check the boot order the expansion port is not listed as an option. There is an option for doing a network expansion. Are there any bios updates that would read that port on startup?

I'm thinking of buying an Acer Aspire D250 loaded with Win7 and then adding a version of Ubuntu.
The netbook will come with the Acer recovery facility to reinstall Win7 from a recovery partition in the event of OS failure. This means that the MBR and subsequent loaders need to be preserved for this function to remain (I don't have a Win7 disc and don't want to have to buy one).
I'm happy with a basic Win/Linux dual boot setup but I'd value any comments/suggestions as to how to preserve the recovery function when I add Ubuntu.

i can't seem to get a fresh install to boot on a Acer Aspire T160 desktop computer, after the install finishes (basic install, command line only) it gets past 'Verifying DMI Pool.......' but then nothing, it just hangs, no Grub messages, nothing. Here is my hardware/config
Proc: Sempron 3200
Mem: 512 MB
/dev/hda1 110GB / Bootable
/dev/hda2 4GB Swap
/dev/md0 150GB /home
/dev/sda1 RAID
/dev/sdb1 RAID
i have tried RAID1 and RAID0 for md0, no change, i've also disconnected the raid all together and just installed on the IDE drive, still nothing. I noticed the BIOS supports hardware RAID but i have that disabled from past experiences and opting for software raid instead. i've gone through 'linux rescue' and reinstalled Grub, rebuilt raids and checked disks.
an interesting thing happens tho if i just have the IDE drive plugged in and nothing else... i get a BIOS message asking to plug in a bootable disk, does this mean it doesn't see my linux install at all? doesn't know to pass the boot along to /dev/hda?
i'm running out of ideas, tho neither have i tried installing to the raid... nor have i tried any other distros (Fedora, Ubuntu) on this machine yet.
