Fedora :: Arrow Keys Won't Work In Boot Menu / Resolve This?

When rebooting and in Boot Selection Menu , the Arrow keys won't go down through kernel selections. They just won't move.
Is this a Linux or CMOS problem ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Arrow Keys Don't Work In GRUB
May 26, 2010I bought a fancy new keyboard a couple of weeks ago, a Logitech illuminated one, and it works great in openSuSE 11.2 . . . after it's booted up. It's a dual boot system, however, and today I needed to get into Windows to do some CAD work, and couldn't! That's when I discovered that the arrow keys didn't work in GRUB. It's the particular keyboard, because I can plug the old one in and the problem goes away. Both are USB keyboards. And it must have something to do with loading a keyboard driver of some sort prior to the GRUB screen, because the new keyboard works fine once the bootup is completed. In fact, I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and didn't notice a problem until today.

Jan 7, 2011I am attempting to try install XUbuntu.
I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.
My system details are:
HP compaqnx9000
Mobile Intel Pentium(R) 4-m CPU 2.20 GHz 219GHz 704MB RAM
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7580A
Radeon 1GP 340M
Fedora :: Left And Up Arrow Keys Not Working?
Apr 6, 2010I just installed fc12 on a Dell Latitude E6500 laptop. Everything is fine except that my Left and Up arrow keys are inactive so .e.g. I can't review bash history.
In the "keyboard preferences" GUI the keyboard model is "evdev-managed keyboard" (although I have also tried without success the model specific for this laptop) and the only layout is "USA".
Have done an update of all packages without fixing this problem.

Ubuntu :: The Gnome Main Menu Arrow Doesn't Work
Jan 7, 2011I've just read this thread: [URL] and the information it seems is a bit out of date and a risk to use. I felt more comfortable with the .gtkrc-2.0 file suggested a few posts in, but it doesn't work, in that it turns the panel to the Raleigh-themed one which we always get when there's some kind of error in a gtkrc file, as those of us that have dabbled in theming will know.
It's comical that this minor but unnecessary eyesore goes back so far and hasn't been dealt with, but is there any new info about this, a new method, for 10.10? I don't want to be doing compiling or to risk messing things up, as has been caused by the directions in the other thread, because I've been experimenting with different distros for two years, just bought a new hard drive, and have settled now.
Maybe someone here knows why the .gtkrc-2.0 file hasn't worked for me? I twigged that the panel (though not the rest of the theme, i.e. in program windows) had turned to Raleigh because of those ugly handles pertaining to the Window List panel applet and the one to the left of the notification area. I used the exact file in that other thread, I tried logging out and in and then rebooting, and I even tried pasting the file's contents into the gtkrc file of the theme I use. If you need to know, I'm using the 'Lush' Metacity window border and the 'Redmond' engine.

Ubuntu :: Scrolling Using Arrow Keys In Firefox?
Jan 30, 2010When using firefox, if I use my arrow keys in the keyboard to scroll through the Window, it works only if the mouse pointer is inside the window. Otherwise, the scroll doesn't work. Is there any way to solve this problem?
It's not just the arrow keys, even the TouchPad scroll on my laptop also.

Aug 14, 2010This is a weird problem I am facing right now. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) Firefox 3.6.3. The tab key, the arrow keys and the page down / up keys dont work anymore. They're working fine in any other application, like Chrome.
The keys were fine till yesterday and suddenly they have stopped responding.

Nov 20, 2010How can I remap arrow keys to windows key + ijkl? I can do this easily in Autohotkey on windows, but I'm struggling on Ubuntu.
I'd really like the solution to work independently of whether I'm using a window manager or not, and to involve modifying as few files as possible; I work on a lots of different machines and am always building new ones, so would like to minimise reconfig effort.
I've tried to understand .Xmodmap, but couldn't make it work (was hard to find detailed docs on modifier keys). Am also considering win+hjkl!

Jul 6, 2011I am having a lot of problems with hitting the arrow keys while typing. At least, I think that's what it is. Maybe the page up/down/back buttons, too. Is there a way to disable one or more keys on the keyboard via software, other than going into BIOS? It's getting annoying having to retype stuff over and over. I guess maybe I'm just not used to my new keyboard, is all. But I never use those buttons and likely never will.

Jan 2, 2010Recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.1. Great OS. One minor issue with the keyboard.
When playing games, both for Linux and through wine, the game will respond as if the up and left arrow keys are being constantly held down.
It acts like this in Cave Story (Linux version), Sonic Adventure DX Directors Cut: Demo A Version (Wine), and Star Trek Legacy (Wine).
This does not occur when using any non-game applications on my system, such as Open Office. This does not occur when using anything on the Internet, such as simply typing or Internet games.
Other Info, may or may not be helpful: Used ubuntu 8.04 previously, erased old ubuntu partition when upgrading. Arrow Keys responded fine for all applications listed above. Have a Microsoft Windows XP partition as well, only use it for applications that don't run in wine.

Oct 11, 2010I have updated to 10.10 and now my ir remote is simulating keyboard arrow keys which is causing problems in applications like Boxee. The weird thing is if I stop lircd it still simulates the keyboard arrow keys.
Does anyone know how to stop the keyboard arrow keys from triggering when the ir remote up, down, left or right buttons are pressed?

Aug 19, 2011So, I have my trusty ol' Aspire One ZG5 running with Natty. I like changing the screen orientation (sideways) to read comic books and books. I've learned how by this page: URL...So, I have no trouble changing my screen orientation with a quick key-combo, but I still need help,I'm trying to figure out how to change the "orientation" of the arrow keys along with the screen. So when i have the screen oriented to the left, the left key works as the up, the up down as the right, etc.

Jan 29, 2011I have dual boot (winxp) which has been working for over a year now.But for some reason recently, grub wont recognise the keyboards arrow keys. ie cant change menu selection. in fact it wont recognise keyboard at all it seems. Pressing enter wont work either. I have to wait for the timeout.
The arrows work before hand (like in bios settings) and after once ubuntu has booted. Just not in the grub menu
Its something to with the USB wireless keyboard. If i replace it for standard PS2 kybd it works.
Fedora :: Can't Change Global Volume Using Applet - Function Keys / Resolve It?
Jun 14, 2009Sound is my #1 issue on F11.
Most of the time I can't change the system wide volume setting by pressing the function keys on my laptop (the volume indicator doesn't even show up). When that happens (and I havent't been able to find out why and under what conditions that happens) the volume applet on my panel also becomes useless. Useless meaning that I can slide the slider up and down with no effect on the audible volume. I can still change the volume within the individul applications (rhythmbox, totem, ...) with success.
Adjusting the volume via gst-mixer or pavucontrol does also works as expected. It's really just the volume keys and the panel applet that refuse to cooperate.
About this system (pretty standard intel_hda, no problems with F10)code...
Slackware :: Konsole Does Not Recognize Keypad Arrow Keys On Slackware 13.0 / Fix It?

keypad:
rightarrow,leftarrow,uparrow,downarrow,home,end,pageup,pagedown
Both of the other terminal emulators on slack do recognize
these keys (xterm and xfce terminal emulator).
I can also confirm that xev, if launched from konsole will recognize
these keys.
Konsole is my terminal emulator of choice and it is really nice to
be able to use my left hand for navigation and command retrieval.
Also, keypad arrows work in X apps.

I don't like the black arrow on the Main Menu so I followed the instructions to get rid of it posted hereI got to the part where I type "sudo make" However, I get the exact error posted hereI tried to follow the solution, I installed libpanel-applet2-dev using synaptic. I tried to edit the "Makefile" in the directory /var/cache/apt-build/build/gnome-panel-2.30.2. Jan 17, 2010I saw a similar thrad, but can't find it anymore. Anyhow it was not resolved. So I take the liberty to post this in a new thread: I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop in dual boot configuration (other OS is WinXP). grub starts and I can hit enter to boot Ubuntu. However as soon as I use an arrow key to move downwards in the menu, grub hangs. In this condition I cannot boot any other OS, not even the "safe" version of Ubuntu.
Any idea what is the cause of this? It is a fresh installation and I read in the other thread that reinstalling grub or re-running grub-update had no positive effect. Does anone know how I can install grub 0.97 ? Where do I find it?

Jul 31, 2009I removed pulseaudio save for the libs, and now I can't lock down my desktop with ctrl+alt+l anymore. I can still lock the system with the menu (System > Lock Screen), but it's kind of annoying. Removing pulseaudio has cleared up all of my mplayer stutter issues, but I would like to be able to use the keyboard shortcut keys. Here's the command I used to strip out pulseaudio:

Aug 19, 2010As a preface, this is not an F7 carat mode problem.Firefox 3.6.8 in Lucid no longer is navigable with the keyboard.Up/Down arrows, PgUp/PgDown, Home/End, when the page is in focus, fail to scroll the window. TAB fails to switch between form fields on the page and in the toolbar (Example: Previously, CTRL-L to go to URL field then TAB into the search field would work. Now the CTRL-L works but TAB has no effect.)

Jul 31, 2011I've installed the Awesome WM using "sudo yum install awesome" (as described here https://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Awesome-3-fedora ). I can also log into awesome, but nothing works! I can open the menu on the top left of the screen, but when I click on e.g. "Open Terminal", nothing happens. Same thing for all other menu options except "Shut down" which logs me out of Awesome. I've also tried the terminal shortcut, but nothing works.
Has anyone an idea how to make it work?

May 23, 2010This is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).
When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?

Jul 14, 2009I just updated my kernel to kernel-2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64 on my x64 system, after I reboot my machine, the Fedora loading bar comes up and finishes but then no gui comes up. I attempt to issue commands at the hanging prompt that comes up but nothing happens. I can boot into my older kernel just fine but not the updated one.
What can I do?
