General :: Permissions Locked To Read Only On NTFS Partition

I'm pretty new to Linux. Though I've used it for a little bit, I barely know any shell commands. I recently migrated from Mint to Fedora. Installation went fine and I thought I was doing great until I tried to copy something onto one of my ntfs partitions (I got them automounted through changing fstab). Now I can't change the permissions with sudo chmod... it says I can, but nothing changes. And, while the folders are listed as allowing rw for the user group I set up, I can't actually change anything. I'm guessing I've done something wrong with my fstab file.

I should probably note that I'm using NVIDIA fake RAID 0, which is why my device locations are all /dev/mapper/nvidia_fcficeibp#

Recently updated the kernel in Ubuntu 9.10 and for some reason now, a folder which was not read-only now is. I can't delete anything from it. Have tried using the GUI for changing permissions, however, it has a mind of it's own and won't unlock the folder.
Anyone had this happen where a folder locked when you didn't want it to be?
I was updating from 10.04 to 10.10 earlier today when my laptop shutoff in the middle. I fixed a grub error by reinstalling it with a live-cd, and found out I had a "kernel panic-not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on" waiting for me. I booted an alternative kernel and tried fixing things from there, but got "general error mounting filesystem". So, I tried a live-cd and when I mount the partition, it is read-only. I have an NTFS partition that I use to swap file back and forth between Vista and F13. I store school files in there, like documents and text files. When I use Nautilus to access the partition, I am always asked for my root password. This is a little annoying. Is there anyway I can keep this from happening?
I have my Windows partition set up to auto mount with fstab. I can access it fine in the command line and launchers that I created with out the root password. I suppose I could do the same for this partition, but I would like to access it directly with Nautilus if it is possible.
I've recently installed an OpenSuse 11.2 in what I'd like to be a definitive jump from windows environment.I'm not very confident yet with my linux skills, so at this moment I've yet have both systems installed with a data NTFS partition to store music, movies, documents, and general data that I'd like to use in any of the two systems. The NTFS partition has no writting permissions for anybody except root user, so I can't work anything from my personal user without starting an app like su or login as root. I want to change this by making a group (windowsWriters) where my usual user is included wich I pretend to make the group owner of NTFS partition.
I've created the group and inserted my user into it, but I'm unable to change the owner group nor any permission on NTFS partition or any of it's subdirectories. I've tried to made it through opening dolphin as su (Alt+F2 kdesu dolphin) and through chmod in consolemode logged as root, in both cases the action seems to work correctly and no error is spotted, however when I look again at the partition/folder/file permissions/ownership no changes have been made.
I've installed two Linux distributions in my PC, Fedora12 and CentOS 5.5, and also Windows in a ntfs partition. I can operate windows partition in Fedora easily, however, I cannot find the windows partition in CentOS, furthermore, in CentOS all mobile hard drive that formatted as NTFS cannot be mounted.
When my external USB-HDD with NTFS auto-mounts, the default permissions are set to drwx------ 1 userid users. So only I have read-write but all others have no permissions at all. This is annoying because I have pictures on this drive that I share via an apache web server running as wwwrun. So I wonder how I can change the default permissions to something like rwxr--r-- so that apache can access the pictures?
can assign permissions on a partition with ntfs as the file system. I am aware of editing fstab and setting some basic permissions. What I am clumsily dictating is can you edit permissions of individual folders for specific users in Linux. I have already tried chmod and such
I have a problem with my external hdd, I mounted it manually and in the mount table it says ive got rw permissions. But when i try to change permissions it says:

I have a Western Digital 3TB USB drive connected to a Raspberry Pi 2 running Raspbian Jessie. I created an 30GB ext4 system partition and a NTFS Data partition using the remainder of the drive. I formatted the NTFS partition as follows:
sudo mkfs.ntfs -Q -L Data /dev/sda2
The drive works fine on the Pi but when I connect it to a Windows 7 pc the pc doesn't recognise the format of the Data partition and can't access it.
I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit desktop version on ext4 partition without swap. I have maximus iv extreme motherboard with 8 Gbytes RAM. Using 3 internal ntfs formatted hard drives and 3 external ntfs usb 2.0 hard drives.When I am trying to copy or move files FROM or TO any ntfs partiton it is 90 percent chance it is going to freeze.For copy/moving files I am using krusader run as ROOT or as user without root privilege or Nautilus as user without root privilege. It wasn't possible to switch to another terminal - it simply does not react on keyboard or mouse input and only hard reset is possible (scares me because of ntfs disks)From this point of view I have suspicious on ntfs driver but:I am completely beginner in linux and I am looking for help to navigate me how to investigate to find what is causing the problem eventually to solve it?
According to my experience it seems to does not matter if hard disk is internal or external connected through SATA II or SATA III or USB 2.0. I have tried to manipulate with ntfspartitions through the vmware or virualbox or truecrypt software or just do a simplecopy/move files - it have has always the same results - freeze. There is not possible to say how long it is going to work properly and when it is going to freeze - sometimes it's working hour, sometimes it's working couple of seconds - no matter if it is read or write operation/s within ntfs partition.
I'm dual booting windows vista and ubuntu hardy on a multi-partitioned Dell D630. I created a partition using mkfs -t ntfs. Linux has no trouble reading/writing to it, but every time I boot into windows, chkdsk tries to "fix" the partition, fails, and tells me that the partition is corrupted. Can anybody suggest a way to convince vista that the partition is indeed ok, or else another way to create the partition so that vista can recognize it?
I was attempting to format a flash drive, and well, used the wrong sdX device. I've run DiskInternals Partition Recovery tool, and all my files are still there (you have to pay $139 to have it restore the files). Is there any way using tools in linux to restore the ntfs partition/files? It was a single disk with the partition taking the entire drive. I've tried mounting it with the -t option, but it says invalid ntfs signature. Man, two lessons the hard way, make sure you backup (duh) and be careful what you type as root.
I dual boot into Arch Linux and OS X 10.6 on my MacBook pro. I synced my UID between both OSes and created an HFS partition (with no journaling) to use as a shared home/Users partition. For the most part it works just as I'd expect, but sometimes when I'm booted into OS X certain files are "locked" (when I get info on a particular file the "Locked" box is checked under the "General" pane. I can resolve the issue by manually unchecking the box) and/or I get "Operation not permitted" when I try deleting or chmod'ing a file. In both cases I don't see anything out of the ordinary on the permission bits displayed with ls -l, except for a trailing '@' character in the position where the sticky bit would normally occur:
This '@' character shows up on ALL normal files, so doesn't seem to be linked to the locked/operation not permission situation.
On the Linux side of things I never have permission problems. To the best of my limited knowledge and experience with ACLs I've not found any ACLs on any of the files in question.
For what it's worth, I do most of my file editing using emacs (Aquamacs in OSX), is it possible it is setting weird permission bits?
What is the "locked" setting that OS X uses and does it have a permission bit equivalent (so at the very least I could recursively unlock all files in my home directory from the terminal) why might some, but not other files get "locked" when booting into OS X what is the meaning of the '@' character?
any way to change file permissions of NTFS drives? All my C programming files resides in a NTFS drive and I need to set execute permision on them in order to run. I tired chmod -Rv 777 /media/Programming. and also tired chmod 775 *.* after entering the folder in which all my files resides. but both these commands doesn't seem to have any effect on the files. I know NTFS doesn't use Unix file system and chmod command goes in vain.
I finally replaced my Windows with Linux.. However, I need to run applications and modify files that are on NTFS mounts. I am unable to change ownership, permissions, and groups on these files so I may modify them without having to copy. I have several times attempted to chmod, chgrp, chown, etc.. while logged-in as root user; however it is to no avail. The owner and permissions are still geared towards root. can I change ownership and permissions on NTFS files so I can modify them without having to convert/copy them over to ext4 or different file system?- Matbtw: I am using OpenSuse 11.4 and running Windows apps with VirtualBox (with Vista installation image). I still have Win7 on my computer (non-emulated) and I would like to keep some files on those NTFS partitions so when I occasionally need to boot into Win7 I can modify those files because Windows blows and doesn't support Linux.
I'd like to format my USB in 2 partition: one fat32 (for data switch windows/linux and one for only windows. But when I use gparted to partition my stick in my backtrack installation, windows can only read the fat32, but not the ntfs.
I have a very large and deep directory. I would like to make all of it read only. The problem is I guess I have to distinguish between files (which will get a=r) and directories (which will get a=rx).How can I do that?
I was just using my computer today, and upon restarting, my sound has been disabled, I cannot change my power settings (via CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor on the panel) and cannot mount drives. I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for just under a week. Recently, a partition called 'Data' has disappeared, and all my music and documents along with it. The folder is not to be seen in Places or on my desktop. My only way of finding it is to go to terminal. But when I try to open it there I get an error saying I don't have permission to read it. In Puppy Linux and SliTaz I can easily find the partition and read it. What should I do to bring it back in Ubuntu?
I have a CMS that has a brilliant backup option with one flaw, it can only create a full backup in a directory inside the web root. In this case /var/www/site/backups. This is not practical for security as the resulting tar.gz file contains a full mysql backup as well as other items that the general public shouldn't be downloading.What permissions do I need to set so that the directory /var/www/site/backups cannot be browsed to in a browser but can be read / written by the CMS when a PHP script calls it?
I have created directories in root. I am looking for the chmod command to allow all users read and write permissions to a specific directory. I have done chmod 775 for a file but I need this for a directory. This includes permissions on all files and sub directories.
What I want to be able to do, is have create a group, for example called "group1" and set its default permissions to read & write, instead of the usual just read.
So when I add a user into "group1" they automatically have read & write access to all files & directories which is in "group1".
Oh & I use crunchbang 10 (statler) for my desktops & Ubuntu 11.04 for my NFS/print/SSH/etc/etc server
