General :: Ports Unreachable For Online Conections

Mar 21, 2011

i'm trying to run a server for a game, that requires a few ports open (*since i connect to the internet with a router); for example one of the ports that needs to be open is "8888". But i tryed opening it thru my router localhost and it doesn't work (d-link DIR-400), so i was thinking if there's any way to open the ports of the router directly from Ubuntu; maybe console or program?for example for windows there's (Smart Port-fowarding) wich opens the ports you want without goint thru the router page.

Ubuntu Networking :: Restarting The System / Wifi Conections Aren't Able To Be Detected?

Jan 3, 2011

I have a problem with my BROADCOM BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN... I made a clean installation of Maverick Meerkat and everything runs perfect except the card drivers... then I investigated almost a week on the net and finally the problem was solved (I made the installation of some drivers on Synaptics tool, then I wrote some codes on the Terminal to activate the light to turn it blue and the Wi-Fi IS ON AND WORKS!).

I thought everything was ok, but when I restarted the laptop, the wifi conections aren't able to be detected so I must re-install the card driver to get it active again :S. I really don't know why the card drivers works only when I install them, because restarting the system make them simply don't work.

I read something about changing my user's state (it was 'personalized') to 'administrator', but nothing happened.I searched on Ubuntu's web but nothing works. It's a Compaq Presario V3000.

General :: Cannot Access/ping Debian \ Gives Destination Host Unreachable?

Nov 27, 2010

I cannot access/ping my Debian server. I know the IP is right (ifconfig, route and ip addr) all gave me 10.0.2.25 (route gave me 10.0.2.0).I cannot ping it from any computer in my netwerk, even when I try to ping it from my Debian itself, it gives me Destination Host Unreachable !(Wierdly, I can ping 10.0.2.2 tho).I am using virtualbox when the netwerk options 'NAT' turned on. When I look at my /etc/network/interfaces/ the last line looks like:iface eth0 inet dhcpShouldn't their be some other stuff listed?

General :: Gnome - "Network Unreachable" Using NetworkManager?

Feb 14, 2011

I just moved my Linux/Windows dual-booting laptop from a desk with an Ethernet jack to a desk that is within the WiFi range of our 2WIRE integrated modem/WiFi/ethernet router. I use GNOME with NetworkManager, and though NetworkManager reports that everything is fine with the connection, I am unable to access anything outside the local network, though I can access the modem/router and the other computers perfectly. However, when I either plug it into an Ethernet cable or boot into Windows, it works just fine.

ifconfig and iwconfig both report that the connection works, the router's firewall is set to allow all outbound traffic, and the laptop's firewall is also set to allow all inbound traffic. How is this even possible, and more importantly, how could I get it fixed?

General :: Online Banking Security

Jun 3, 2011

I'm new to Linux(Ubuntu 11.4), just installed it two weeks ago. I've been a member of Linuxquestion for about 2 or 3 years mostly lurking.I have building/buying computers for 30 years, first DOS,Windows 3.1, then Windows 95 through all to Win7.My question is for security of online banking and other financial things. Everything.I've been reading on here indicates that no Antivirous/Malware is needed. Being new to Linux, I can't tell if ClamAV is working or if is even needed.I had thought about doing banking on my wife's machine(Windows only) rebooting to a Ubuntu LiveCD. Does this sound like a more secure idea? Our two other machines are both dual boot with Ubuntu alongside of Windows XP & Windows 7.

General :: Map Joysticks To Specific USB Ports?

Nov 17, 2010

I'm working on a Linux (fedora) based arcade dance machine using a game called Stepmania. I've got it all up and running and i'm trying to get it to work with two dance pads.

It detects the dance pads fine and they work well, the only issue is that when the machine is turned on it seems to randomly pick which pad is /dev/input/js0 and which is /dev/input/js1

What this leads to is the pad on the left controlling the character on the right & vice-versa. So I was wondering if there is any way to tie or map the joystick to a particular USB port so they always stay where they should ? Or is there another way this could be accomplished ?

General :: Multiple Sshd On Different Ports ?

May 17, 2011

How to separate sftp and ssh and run on different ports.

i.e.
a) sftp on port x
b) ssh on port 22

I searched from the web and there are no detailed instructions. They suggested something like separating sshd_config into two files (file A and file B) and run two instances. Each instance points to its configuration file.

However, they didnt write down the detailed procedure of:

a) how to modify file A and file B (i.e. which line should insert specific commands)?

b) how to run two instances?

c) how to point each instance to its config file.

I am using Linux CentOS and the latest open-ssh.

General :: Where Would I Upload A Distro To Share It Online?

Jul 8, 2011

As soon as I get the hang of remastering, I am planning to remaster my distro (I have MEPIS 8 now, but will switch to either 9 or 11) to do two things: install KDE Trinity (I don't like KDE 4), and remove all extraneous software: games, "toys," and specialized programs that it was peculiar to include on the liveCD in the first place (such as jbidwatcher, a program for monitoring eBay bids). Oh, and I'll try to make it fit into one CD (not one DVD). Since I don't like downloading DVD-sized distros in the first place ( DVDs cost more!), I might download the latest antiX MEPIS and modify it to my liking.

If I successfully remaster a new version of MEPIS to my specifications, I might as well try to share it online in case anyone would want it. Where would I upload a Linux distro to share it?

General :: Wget Works But Elinks Won't Go Online?

Apr 11, 2011

I've got a bit of tricky situation with a Red Hat box, our network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet. I've exported its address using "export http_proxy=http://usernameassword@server_iport" and to test I ran a wget against www.google.co.za and got a response, but using elinks to connect to google gives a proxy requires authentication error. It cant possibly be the credentials as wget can connect. I've confirmed that the proxy was exported by running "env | grep -i proxy", I also tried appending that line on both "/etc/profile" and/or "/root/.bash_profile" with no luck. one other thing I noticed is that passing those arguments directly to elinks works, not only this but "ssh -X server_ip_address" then running firefox& and giving it the proxy address also works. Is the any other way to make this line global, meaning to tell all applications that require internet connection to use the proxy? The server is sitting at a remote location and I only have access to a shell.
