General :: Ping Not Working In Chroot Environment

May 16, 2011

How can I use the ping command in a chroot environment?
$ ping 8.8.8.8
ping: icmp open socket: Operation not permitted
Currently I am using CentOs, but ideally there must be a solution that works in all chrooted environments.

General :: Creating A Chroot Environment - Specifically With A Different Kernel ?

May 9, 2011

I have successfully installed a Ubuntu chroot (Maverick) on a running Linux appliance (an old Thecus N5200PRO box) which has been running various services for me quite happily.

When I attempted to add a webcam (for snapshotting) to this mix, I've come up against a problem. Since the chroot by default uses the kernel of the Thecus appliance, there appears to (understandably) be no support for the Logitech UVC webcam in the appliances' kernel; consequently inside or outside the chroot I can't access the UVC webcam.

I think I can get around this in a simple way if I can run a standard Ubuntu Maverick 32-bit kernel in the chroot.

Does anyone know how to chroot with alternative kernels, or quite simply, how to get a UVC webcam accessible on a Thecus N5200PRO?

Other details:

Debian Configuration :: Man-db In Chroot Ssh Environment

Aug 26, 2015

I've been bashing around this for a couple of days, and could not find answer by using google. My debian 8.1.0 jessie runs perfectly fine. To perform SSH chroot jail, I issued an apt-get install makejail.

The ssh chroot environment runs great. I used makejail configuration scripts. The man pages are perfectly available from TTY login. Yet from a SSH session (chroot jailed) the man pages could not be found.

My MANPATH environment variable points at /usr/share/man

Running "mandb -c" from a SSH session as root tells:

0 man subdirectories contained newer manual pages.
0 manual pages were added.
0 stray cats were added.
0 old database entries were purged.

simply copying the contents of the /usr/share/man to /jail/usr/share/man
and running the "mandb -c" command gives lots of "dangling symlink" errors.

Perhaps the /jail directory need some dependent files, or change file permissions somewhere but I just couldn' t figure that out.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Set Up A Chroot Environment

Aug 25, 2011

I`m running openSUSE Tumbleweed so the first question is: can i run ONLY another openSUSE OS inside the environment ? or can i run any distro i want ?

My second question is how do it set up the environment to act just like my normal OS, with both root and user rights on it? and of course can i run X ?

And finally third question: after googling a bit i did not found a tutorial for openSUSE but i have seen that is says that i have mount and/or bind certain things, how do i make the same thing under openSUSE for the respective chroot environment?

Networking :: Getting Two Servers To Communicate (Ping) In VMWare Environment

Dec 18, 2010

I am testing with Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 in a VMWare environment. I've installed two SLES10 servers, named sles1 and sles2. I can't get the two servers to communicate, even a simple ping won't work. The "Network Adapter" in VMWare is set to "bridged", a setting which has worked fine when installing WinXP in VMWare and connecting to the Internet. I have configured the Network Settings as follows:

SLES1:
-Statically assigned IP Address
-IP-address: 192.168.0.20
-Subnet: 255.255.255.0 (/24)
-Hostname: sles1

Hostname/DNS tab:
-Hostname: sles1
-Domain Name: local
-Name server: blank

Routing tab:
-Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (= my router connected to the Internet)
SLES2: same as sles1, with IP 192.168.0.22 and Hostname sles2

With these network settings, the two servers seem totally unable to communciate.
-When I ping sles2 from sles1, I always get the error message: connect: Network is unreachable
-Whatever way I ping, either ping sles2, ping sles2.local, ping 192.168.0.22, whatever, the error message is always the same.
-Even if I ping sles1 from sles1 (= "pinging myself"), I get the same error message.
-Only if I ping localhost, I get a proper ping result.

We wish to have a centralized environment, so that users can log in to a server with their user names irrespective of the systems they will set. General :: Change Group In Working Environment

Sep 8, 2010

I have files that are sourced when users are working on a project. The files set environment variables and cd to the correct working directory and automate a few other things for the end users.

One thing I have not been able to figure out is how to change the user to a different group. Files created in a project context should have the project GID instead of the users default GID. I tried the newgroup command but it starts a new shell and breaks the other automation.

Any ideas on how this can be setup?

Fedora Networking :: Ping Working But Internet Not Working From Dhcp Clients

Jul 17, 2009

I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients. Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?

Networking :: Cannot Ping Gateway Server Within Windows Networking Environment

Jul 11, 2011

I am trying to get a Linux (Slackware 13.37) working in a Windows networking environment. The IT support for this organisation does not extend to Linux support, so I'm limited in what help I can get for this.

I'm trying to get to the point where I can get to the internet to download what I need on this Linux machine.

The situation is this (*fictitious addresses used) -My Linux machine uses a fixed IP address (10.100.150.21)
My Windows machine uses a DHCP assigned IP address (10.100.150.213)Both Linux and Windows machine are configured to access the gateway server (10.100.150.1)So, I can ping the Linux machine from the Windows machine and vice-versa.I can ping the gateway machine from the Windows machine.I can browse Windows Shares on the network via SMB from the Linux machine.I CANNOT ping the gateway machine from the Linux machine with the Destination Host Unreachable message being the error message.

For actual internet access I need to access a proxy server but since the Linux machine can't even ping the gateway server, it fails to ping the proxy. Now, I have been told the gateway is a HW based router and for Windows machine they use some software for authentication to connect to the network. This software isn't available for Linux, so that's why I've been told to use a fixed IP address. My experience of networking is pretty basic and most of the Linux setup is done via running Slackware's setup program.

Debian Configuration :: SSH, Ping And ARP Not Working As They Should

Mar 13, 2010

i am running debian testing and the last few days i was trying to ssh to another pc on my network and i was getting an error like there was no machine with that ip! then i tried pinging to it with no luck! ARP was the only tool that returned the MAC address of the machine and that is strange i think. i realised then that i could only ping the gateway and localhost (127.0.0.1 not my ip). after editing my /etc/hosts, i could ping my ip as well. what is so wrong? here are some useful things:

my new /etc/hosts:
jack@debian:~$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1   localhost
127.0.1.1   debian.local debian

General :: Make A Chroot Non Jail?

May 10, 2010

how to prepare (before issuing the chroot command) directory links out of a chroot environment. I have done a bunch of reading, but not yet experimenting, about chroot. I mostly understand its main purpose of creating an environment in which it is safer to run untrusted software. But I want to use it for some other things, involving trusted software.

I want to create a directory tree in which the various top level directories are links to various directories in the main directory tree. For example, when running on a Debian based 64 bit system (where /lib has 64 bit .so files) I might want to create a root in which /lib links to the directory containing 32 bit .so files (same as /lib32 normally links to).

IIUC, chroot blocks soft links from getting outside. So I could create a directory containing lib as the desired soft link, but if I did chroot to that directory, the link would no longer point where I wanted. Is that correct? IIUC, I can't do a hard link to a directory. Is that correct? How would you create a directory link that would point out of a chroot "jail"? (Yes I do understand that is contrary to the common purpose for a chroot).

From reading, again not yet experimenting, I think mounting an aufs might do it. It looks like aufs might be used to mount a directory into another directory. Is that correct? Am I missing some easier way to mount a directory into a directory? Would such an aufs mount link out of the chroot? Or suffer the same fate as a soft link?
