I decided to clone my OS partition to another hard drive using dd (without any special options). I created the target partition before cloning (25GB) but it shows up as 21GB (source/original partition's size) in df, as well as ext2 instead of ext4.

9.3GB EISA Configuration
65GB NTFS (the C: drive as windows calls it)
I am going to clone the entire hard disk with clonezilla, I am not sure what the EISA partition is and if it can be cloned(then restored) using clonezilla. I did google it, its probably some kind of a recovery partition of some sort.
I am looking for Backup Program to clone the partition of Ubuntu.
View 7 Replies View RelatedQuestion:Several months ago I upgraded my hard drive on a dual boot machine (xp & U9.10 - both 64bit) from approx 80gb to 250gb. I chose to use DriveClone from windows to clone the old drive directly to the new drive. Operational everything works fine. the problem is the Ubuntu HD size went from around 10GB to approx 150Gb, but the filesystem only recognizes approx. 10GB as the total available capacity. I just tried to reinstall Ubuntu without reformatting and only recovered a few GB's. GParted reports the proper partition size. Is there any way I can correct this problem? It's not a big issue...I thought I would check here first before I reformatted the partition. The pre-boot disk check ran and reported no errors but the file system is still not seeing the unused GB's.

View 5 Replies View Relateda client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?
Anyone know why Linux has to share a partition type code (specifically, 0700) with Windows? Why can't it have its own like some other OSes?

After a few days, i decided to remove ubuntu so i just logged into windows and formatted the ubuntu partition using the windows partitioner, then extended my main c: drive to span the whole disk so that i was left with a single partition with only windows vista on it.Later when trying to restart my system couldn't log back into windows.I kept getting a prompt sayinggrub rescue>After googling around a bit i shrinked and created another partition the disk again and installed ubuntu on it again.still. =/GRUB doesn't show any windows entry.I noticed something strange though that when i tried viewing my partitions using parted i didnt see any filesystem type listed besides my windows partition (/dev/sda3). I doubt that is why GRUB does not show any windows entry.Also i manually tried to boot into windows from the grub prompt using commands...root(hd0,3)chainloader +1bootbut it says 'invalid signature'Did i somehow corrupted my windows partition during resizing and installing/un-installing? i used to have ubuntu 9.i decided to move to sabayon so i used the live cd to install it ,resize the ubuntu partition and use the remaining space for sabayon.while the resizing procedure i got an error(i dont have a copy of the error log file but i know it has something to do with an anaconda process).i aborted the installation and the result was an filesystem that couldnt be mounted.when i try to mount the hdd i get this:

I have a bunch of computers with the same configuration, so I would like to install Ubuntu only to one master computer and later on just copy the partition layout and the filesystem unto other computers. Previously I was able to simply copy the partition layout (via the sfdisk utility), the filesystem (a simple "cp -a") and install Grub (via script). Now I had to use the parted utility to partition the 2TB drive and Grub2 is the default boot loader.
My questions are now:
1. How do I copy the partition layout from /dev/sda (master) to /dev/sdb (clone)?
2. How do I batch install install Grub2 to the other disk (e.g. /dev/sdb) ?
In Grub 0.97 it used to be something like that:

The Grub2 syntax is way different compared to Grub0.97. Yes, I do could use the Grub2-suggested option but since the partition layouts on both partitions are equal, I see little point in setting the BIOS Boot Partition option, since the master computer works without it and I don't remember any error message during the install.
Installed Ubuntu from an iso and now can boot only from /dev/loop0 need to clone this to /dev/sda, is this possible if so what are the commands.

The resulting partition is supposed to be 129GB, and gparted/partition magic see that size. But the system does not, and all tools report the old partition size and the same free space I had before resizing.

I'd like to clone a partition, and then restore it to a logical volume. I have all three operating systems at my disposal (Mac, Windows, Linux Live CD) What is the best way to achieve this. The partition I am trying to resize is only 200MB, so I can store it on usb if need be.

I have Ubuntu server 8.04. I have 4 hard drives of 149Go each. Size of a mounted partition is smaller thant the partition itself :
- first drive is the system
- I mounted the 2nd drive (ext3) on a folder, but the Size is 941.89 MB instead of 149Go
- same for drive 3 monted on another folder, but the Size is 941.89 MB instead of 149Go
I've got a server that needs more space. To achieve this we added space (by extending the VMware disk attached to it).Normally this isn't an issue, because we just add an new partition and LVM it from there, but this host predates our deployment of LVM everywhere.
Our current theory is that the unallocated sectors can not be assigned because they aren't part of the extended partition, and thus ... we go in a circle.So what i believe the way forward is to extend sda4 so that i can then create an sda10 inside of it. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I was thinking gparted may do the trick ... but being a server i'm in runlevel3, with no X...
I am relatively new to Linux and Opensuse. I created the / root partition and now it is growing and maxing out. I have partitioner available to me but how do I change the partition size when the root partition is mounted. Do I login as root and then umount or modify fstab and restart and change from command line or do I format and reinstall everything? I have room to expand but not sure how to manage this?

I have read the guide here [URL] but what they didn't mention is what to do when you have a graphics card that isn't supported in Debian Lenny's repo driver version. I have the GeForce GTS 250, which isn't listed under the 173.14.09 (the stable repo version) supported VGA cards list. The version I need can be found in Sid and Squeeze (195.36.24 currently). If I add the Sid repository, it seems to work but it returns a whole lot of other unrelated package updates and its really annoying since I don't want to change to Sid yet. So how do I keep the rest of my packages under Debian lenny with only the minimal amount of packages to be under Sid.
I tried APT pinning once but the standard '*' won't work unless if it's alone in the 'Package' line. To clarify, a line like:
Package: nvidia-*
would get ignored.
I would also need a list of required packages and dependencies that must be installed from Debian sid to get this to work. The documentation for APT didn't help much. I can usually get around this problem by using the NVIDIA way but then I can't boot into Gnome GUI at all under other kernel versions except the one I compiled it for, unless I use the terminal to restore the Xorg stock drivers.
