Is there a way to clone a partition (40GB) and put it on another partition (on a another hdd) with the size of 20GB? The partition that is cloned is using only 3 GB of 40 GB.

I am trying to clone a HDD which has Windows Vista installed. There are two patitions in in:
9.3GB EISA Configuration
65GB NTFS (the C: drive as windows calls it)
I am going to clone the entire hard disk with clonezilla, I am not sure what the EISA partition is and if it can be cloned(then restored) using clonezilla. I did google it, its probably some kind of a recovery partition of some sort.

I have a bunch of computers with the same configuration, so I would like to install Ubuntu only to one master computer and later on just copy the partition layout and the filesystem unto other computers. Previously I was able to simply copy the partition layout (via the sfdisk utility), the filesystem (a simple "cp -a") and install Grub (via script). Now I had to use the parted utility to partition the 2TB drive and Grub2 is the default boot loader.
My questions are now:
1. How do I copy the partition layout from /dev/sda (master) to /dev/sdb (clone)?
2. How do I batch install install Grub2 to the other disk (e.g. /dev/sdb) ?
In Grub 0.97 it used to be something like that:

The Grub2 syntax is way different compared to Grub0.97. Yes, I do could use the Grub2-suggested option but since the partition layouts on both partitions are equal, I see little point in setting the BIOS Boot Partition option, since the master computer works without it and I don't remember any error message during the install.
Installed Ubuntu from an iso and now can boot only from /dev/loop0 need to clone this to /dev/sda, is this possible if so what are the commands.

Anyway, I'm wondering if someone can tell me what all is needed to clone a fedora install. I cloned the partitions, updated fstab with real device node entries (removed all the UUID stuff), and modified grub.conf with the same changes (as well as all the normal/misc changes needed in /etc for things like hostname, network, ethx naming, etc). However when I try to boot it complains that it cant find the old UUID.
I thought this might be specified in the initrd but I uncompressed it and couldn't find any reference to the uuid anywhere. Where does fedora keep this UUID information at? Right now I'm just trying to clone a mythdora box to another one but in the past I've configured a single gentoo install and cloned it on dozens of other computers.
I have a dual boot of winxp and fedora 12 on a sata laptop hdd in an external USB enclosure. I need to use the hdd for something else, so I want to create a clone image of the drive that I can later restore to a different hdd I put into the enclosure. What is the best method of doing this? Can I boot up into Linux on my external and create a single cloned image and save that image to the internal hdd on my computer? If so how do I do this? View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently running x86_64 F14. I am replacing the HDD(s) with one SSD and one HDD. What I want to do is a fresh install but pull all of the packages over from current install. I am planning on backing up /home and all of that so I can just rsync it. One of the issues though is that I currently use LVM. LVM does not support TRIM yet for the SSD. So I was just going to use ext4 and an extended partition for all of my filesystems. Can I just make a kickstart file that will have all of my current installed packages in it and pass that to the install? Seems like I remember that from my RHCE class. Sadly I don't use kickstart enough to remember.

I've been digging around for a while to try and come up with some solutions, and I'm finally caving and asking for help.I have two PCIe nvidia cards, each with one DVI and two displayport outputs. I know it's a gigantic mess right now as I've been experimenting a lot. If someone can suggest a basic skeleton xorg.conf for one x-screen on GPU-0, one display on GPU-1 cloned onto ANOTHER display on GPU-1 (preferably with a different frequency), it would be much appreciated.
I have two identical servers, one has RHEL 5 and Zimbra installed and the other is currently not really doing anything. Both have hardware RAID (Adaptec) set to RAID10, identical hard drives, etc. The RHEL/Zimbra machine is set up with LVM2. Is it possible for me to hook them up on the secondary NICs and boot the second machine with Knoppix or something else, and easily tell it to duplicate the first machine onto the second, down to the last bit, or do I need to make all the partitions beforehand and dd each one separately?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.
Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.
I have a 120 gig drive that I'd like to clone before it fails completely. I was thinking I'd pull the drive from the server and build a separate machine that has it's own os installed and the source and destination drive. Does anyone know of any linux tools will will do a full drive copy? Additionally, If possible, I'd like to move to a larger drive. how I'd migrate the 120 drive to a 400 or so? 1 idea I have is to install os on 2 new drives to where it they will boot, Then boot with one and copy source to the newly created destination drive.

Where /dev/sda1 is actually a 80 GB hard drive. Is there anyway I can safely and easily repartition the unpartitioned space without causing a huge mess? Recently I reinstall Grub, but I have chosen on ntfs (windows 7 partition E: drive). After this I chosen /dev/sda which is correct boot partition.
Now Fedora 10 and Win 7 booth are working properly.
How can I get back my E: drive safely?

I installed fedora 13 64 bit and it works great but I encountered several issues when setting up guest OS with KVM. The problem seems to be related to selinux. But let me first ask question about logical volume. By Default fedora created logical volumes:

With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem.
