Ubuntu Installation :: Incorrect Filesystem Size After Clone?

Question:Several months ago I upgraded my hard drive on a dual boot machine (xp & U9.10 - both 64bit) from approx 80gb to 250gb. I chose to use DriveClone from windows to clone the old drive directly to the new drive. Operational everything works fine. the problem is the Ubuntu HD size went from around 10GB to approx 150Gb, but the filesystem only recognizes approx. 10GB as the total available capacity. I just tried to reinstall Ubuntu without reformatting and only recovered a few GB's. GParted reports the proper partition size. Is there any way I can correct this problem? It's not a big issue...I thought I would check here first before I reformatted the partition. The pre-boot disk check ran and reported no errors but the file system is still not seeing the unused GB's.
Have just installed Lexmark s605 printer on wireless network, printer works ok but when i print a document even though it is showing the correct size on 'print preview', the printed output is on the page is tiny and and 90deg rotated, I've tried various drivers from the Lexmark website, and also messing about in printer settings but nothing seems to make any difference.
I recently installed Bio-Linux 5.0 as a dual boot system with XP for some bioinformatics applications, but Im having some problems with the amount of disk space which can be allocated specifically for the Ubuntu install.
Ive been using blastclust to analyse some very large data sets, which keeps on crashing due to filesystem running out of disk space.
When I installed Bio-Linux 5.0 from the live cd, the maximum size I could allocate to the install was 30 GiB, and I havent been able to find a way to change this.
Ive tried using System->Administration->Partition Editor using the live cd, and can view / delete the partitions, but I cant find a way to specifically alter the disk space allocation for Ubuntu.
How do I increase the filesystem size to larger than the current 30 GiB?
I have googled and looked around on the forums but I couldn't find anything that directly answers my question. I have a dual boot set up with Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. My hard drive is partitioned into dev/sda1 (where Vista resides) and dev/sda2 (where Ubuntu resides) and /dev/sda4 which I use as a shared hard drive for the two operating systems.
When I first installed Ubuntu on dev/sda2 I used gparted to make /dev/sda2 a 10 GB partition becuase I wanted to try putting ubuntu on a very small partition. Since then I used gparted to expand /dev/sda2 to 32GB. But when I use System Monitor (System--->Adminstrative----->System Monitor) it shows only that the /dev/sda2 space is 10GB (and says that there are only 2.9 GB) remaining unused. Yet when I use gparted to look at the partitions, it says that /dev/sda22 is 32 GB with 3.9 GB remaining unused.
I am wondering if anyone knows why they show two different sizes and what I can do to fix the size being shown. When I tried to make a tar gz back up of my system iit returned a message warning me that my /dev/sda2 partition was almost full because it put the 1.5 GB tar gz file in my home drive (which I suppose the system monitor only sees as a 10 GB space that already has 7 GB in it).
My MP3 Player (Zen:Vision:M) has roughly 60 GB of space and yet Ubuntu insists only 3.6 GB is available. I know this is not true because in Windows the correct amount of room is displayed and can be filled up. Because my music collection is stored in my Linux partition I need to solve this issue if I'm going to actually use my MP3 Player. What is also interesting is the fact that the device doesn't show up in Gparted, System Monitor or fdisk.
When I attempt to look at the Zen's contents through Nautilus I get this message:
Error initializing camera: -1: Unspecified error
And when I update through Banshee every song gives an error of:
I decided to clone my OS partition to another hard drive using dd (without any special options). I created the target partition before cloning (25GB) but it shows up as 21GB (source/original partition's size) in df, as well as ext2 instead of ext4.
I am using Kubuntu Amd64 Lucid on my desktop and I have allocated 08.03 GB partition for swap. But today I have noticed that system monitor is showing this as 09.90GB which is incorrect.
I tried deactivating the swap from KDE Partition manager. Even after deactivating swap it still shows the swap as 1.9 GB. So there is clearly 1.9 GB swap added to my system. I am not sure how. Attached screen shot clearly shows the system monitor issue. One possibility is, I have 4 GB (3.7 asper system) RAM comprising two units of 2 GB cards. Is this 1.9 GB read from one of these? I tried to boot the system from Kubuntu AMD64 live CD and then it showed only 8 GB as expected. So not sure whats causing this issue in my installation.
We use VxVM and VxFS on HP-UX and Ie used them in the past on Solaris.ve found they are available as Storage Foundation v5.1 for 64 bit RHEL.(In fact there�s even a BASIC version for free on 2 processor systems). Previously wed run into a 2 TB limit for filesystems on the older versions we have on HP-UX. The data sheets at Symantec are pure marketing fluff. Does anyone know what the filesystem size limit is for 5.1 on Linux?
How can I shrink a partition to the filesystem size?I copied my ubuntu installation via dd from a smaller partition to a little bit bigger one to have all the same settings and programs and upgraded the distribution afterwards. Now the filesystem is smaller than the partition size. It would be nice to have both partitions have the same size so I could copy back the newer distribution someday ...GParted recognizes the new partition as 27 GB, the filesystem is just 25 GB.Is there a nice way to resize the partition to exact the size of the filesystem so that the filesystems remains untouched and no data might me lost?
my question is according to google search I need to umount the filesystem point in order to reduce its size.... so it means I will require that nobody uses the system? since /var logs a lot information?
I also have the option to reduce /root but I think is more complicated.
so what are the precautions in order to reduce /var/?
But, when I run the du command, it shows I have used only 2G out of 9.9G.

It just driving me crazy and interesting too. This is big problem for us since the root disk / is full and some of the function in our site is failing.
We have 3 RH5u4-64 servers. Server 1 is a standalone server. Servers 2 & 3 are clustered filesystem servers running Veritas CFS 5.0mp3.
Server 1's filesystem is EXT3 and was cloned from a Sun server running Veritas 5.0mp3-VXFS. Filesystem size returned from 'du' 'df' show about 428GB on both the Linux Standalone Server(EXT3) & the Sun Solaris Servers (vxfs).
We then cloned Server 1's filesystem (EXT3) to the 2-node CFS servers. Cloning was successful, but the filesystem sizes returned by 'du' 'df' show 128GB. Block Size for the EXT3 filesystem is 4k while blocksize for the VXFS filesystem is 1k.
Where did that other 300GB go?
I can see VXFS/CFS being slightly more efficient than EXT3 because it's been around much longer, but that can't possibly account for the vast difference.

I am using Fedora core 10. I have changed my partition size of Linux from windows. After I finished resizing the partition, I rebooted my system to the Linux platform. While booting it gave me an error: repair filesytem #1: I don't know what to do?
I am running CentOS 5.5 with a 14T ext4 volume. We are sharing out a few sub-directories via NFS. Our customer was doing some penetration testing with our web app that writes to one of those NFS shares. We are not sure if they did something to cause the metadata to grow so large or if it is corrupt. Here is the listing:drwxrwxr-x 1 owner owner 470M Jun 24 18:15 temp.badI guess the metadata could actually be that large, however we have been unable to perform any operations on that directory to determine if the directory is just loaded with files or corrupted. We have not run an fsck on the volume because we would need to schedule downtime for out customers to do so. Has anyone come across this before
I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed in my desktop and is working fine. I would like to clone the Ubuntu with all my settings etc to a USB Flsah drive so that I can take it with me during travel.I don't want to reinstall in USB FLASH rather I want asis Desktop Ubuntu in USB FLASH.
What's the best way to transfer across one hdd to another? I want to avoid setting up my kubuntu 10.10 instance again and hoping there's a way to easily clone it across.
My Ubuntu system drive is starting to throw up S.M.A.R.T. errors. I have two partitions on the drive (/home and /) and grub in the mbr. Is there a way to exactly clone this drive to another one so I don't need to reinstall or re-setup anything?
My wife's laptop has XP on it, I installed Ubuntu using wubi apparently. I thought I had made a separate partition and made a true dual boot system but I guess I didn't. Is there a way to clone the wubi install to it's own partition and add the boot loader after or am I going to have to do a fresh install and set everything up again? I am surprised that she has taken to Ubuntu as well as she has, I thought she would hate it but she actually prefers it to windows now..
My HDD crashed (it wasn't completely disastrous, though). I was able to get my Ubuntu 10.10 partition of the disk with dd_rescue. I can see all of the data in the partition and everything. dd_rescue reported that there were no errors.Now, I have a fresh HDD, and I copied the image that I created with Gparted, and turned the boot flag on. I turn my system on, and all I get is a flashing cursor in the corner of the screen.I get the feeling that this would be easy for a seasoned user, but I'm not sure where to go. I often run various computers from my Ubuntu 10.04 USB startup disk. Every now and then, people get interested and want a copy of their own. Since I have installed a few extras (VLC, codecs, flash etc) on the disk, not just the out of the box 10.04, I would like to create a clone of the USB startup disk, to give away. How can it be done?
I have a couple of beginner questions;I have checked out some source code in a directory, not inside the home directory, using: Code:git clone git://git.videolan.org/ffmpeg.git ffmpeg-gitI moved the folder around (was not originally in the right directory), and now would like to delete it and start from scratch. How can I do it without creating issues with git? (I don't see ffmpeg-git in Synaptic)More generally, what is the best way to delete old folders related to obsolete or malfunctioning software, or even unsuccessful attempts at installing software ? Can I do 'delete' in the file manager? or just sudo rm <folder name> ? Or is there hidden issues?Another related question: When manually installing packages not available in Synaptic, for example, from downloaded tar.gz, what is the recommended directory structure. For example, is it better to use, for example: /home/<program name>/source to unpack the source code/home/<program name>/build to build the software?as opposed to using folders in the root directory? I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage *Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
I'm trying to preseed a 10.04 install, and it's giving me a lot of trouble. I've been using [url] as a guide, but I can't seem to make it work.
I have ripped the x64 alternate install .iso to my hard drive, inserted the preseed files (details on this later) and remastered and burned the iso. When I put the disc into my test PC, it boots up to the CD, checks for English keyboard, enters my custom install option and then fails. It brings up a red screen that says, "Incorrect CD-ROM detected. The CD-ROM drive contains a CD which cannot be used for installation. Please insert a suitable CD to continue with the installation."
The way I've understood the documentation is that there are 2 files that needed edited, and one file that needs created: edit /isolinux/text.cfg, edit /isolinux/isolinux.cfg, and create /preseed.cfg

The preseed.cfg is 95% copied from the ubuntu documentation, I've only made the changes that are necessary. I'll admit I do not know what most of the boot parameters in the /isolinux/text.cfg file mean.
I was curious if there is any way to clone my system by simply writing into a file which packages are installed AND deinstalled on the source system.
The reason is that I configured a system which fits me just right (I installed some additional packages and removed some standard packages like OpenOffice...) and was wanting to back it up - even for a newer Ubuntu-Version.
Most of the changes are already gone in /var/log/dpkg.log... so this option does not exist...Does anyone know where Synaptic stores the information which package is installed and which is not? It is possible to view those packages by applying a filter.
I'm looking to move my 10.04 installation from an 80 GB HD to a 250 GB HD.
Last week, I successfully moved a Windows system from an 80 GB HD to a 320 GB HD using Clonezilla. However, I must have missed a command option, as I wound up with only 80 GB used on the new drive, and the remaining space unused. I used PartedMagic to resize the partition to use the full space, and all is now well.
Back to my Ubuntu move, on the second machine, I currently have three partitions - /, /swap, and /home. I'd like to expand / just a small amount, leave /swap sized as it is, and give most of the drive space to /home (as that is where I am running out of space). I think I have two options:
Option 1: Use Clonezilla to clone the drive (3 partitions), and then use PartedMagic to move/resize the partitions as desired.
Option 2: Use PartedMagic to set up 3 partitions to the sizes I want, then use Clonezilla to copy to the new partitions.
Option 1 seems to be the easier way. But, is there another option, a better way? Perhaps there's a command option in CloneZilla that I'm just not seeing, which would allow me to do the move in one step?
I have a bunch of computers with the same configuration, so I would like to install Ubuntu only to one master computer and later on just copy the partition layout and the filesystem unto other computers. Previously I was able to simply copy the partition layout (via the sfdisk utility), the filesystem (a simple "cp -a") and install Grub (via script). Now I had to use the parted utility to partition the 2TB drive and Grub2 is the default boot loader.
My questions are now: 1. How do I copy the partition layout from /dev/sda (master) to /dev/sdb (clone)? 2. How do I batch install install Grub2 to the other disk (e.g. /dev/sdb) ?
In Grub 0.97 it used to be something like that: Code: # GRUB the disk grub --no-floppy --batch <<EOF_GRUB root ($GRUB,0) setup ($GRUB) quit EOF_GRUB .....
In Grub 2 I tried with: Code: grub-install --force --root-directory=/mnt/sdb1/ /dev/sdb Only to get this error: .....
The Grub2 syntax is way different compared to Grub0.97. Yes, I do could use the Grub2-suggested option but since the partition layouts on both partitions are equal, I see little point in setting the BIOS Boot Partition option, since the master computer works without it and I don't remember any error message during the install.
