Server :: Increasing Size Of Extended Partition To Allow Creation Of New Partition

I've got a server that needs more space. To achieve this we added space (by extending the VMware disk attached to it).Normally this isn't an issue, because we just add an new partition and LVM it from there, but this host predates our deployment of LVM everywhere.
Our current theory is that the unallocated sectors can not be assigned because they aren't part of the extended partition, and thus ... we go in a circle.So what i believe the way forward is to extend sda4 so that i can then create an sda10 inside of it. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I was thinking gparted may do the trick ... but being a server i'm in runlevel3, with no X...
I am running Fedora 15 along with Windows 7 on my Dell laptop. Yesterday, when I was trying to install TeX Live, it stopped in between saying that there is no space left in File System. Even though I have space in my hard drive volumes, space seems to be running out of my system partition which is only 9GB in size (I guess!).I am posting a few results that might help you guys. I have an unformatted 15GB partition. How can I add it to my system partition? And is my var folder too big (1.5GB)? If yes, how do I backup its contents and then delete them? Additionally, the File System shows a folder 'media' (89GB) which links the C: drive that contains Windows 7 and my personal files. Should it remain that way or should I separate it? If the latter, how? I just couldn't find any.

ecently I tried to increase the size of my swap partition using GParted, but it wouldn't let me. I wondering if there was another way? Currently it's 795 MB but I want it to be 1GB
Around 2008 i seem to remember PartEd on the command-line was able to rescue deleted partitions and gave a choice of whether to recover the partition as a Primary or Logical Partition. I have tried testdisk but didn't really grok what i was doing. I successfully moved a "Windows Recovery" partition to the end of my hard-drive, immediately after the drive's Extended Partition.
extended sata partition shrunk at 15 partition limit, how to re-enlarge i hit the 15 partition limit, forgetting it now exists for sata drives, thinking i would add more. upon creation of the 15th, it squished the end of the extended partition to meet the last logical partition, leaving a large unallocated portion after the extended partition, which seemingly nothing can be done with, just sat being wasted space. i have since deleted a few of those partitions, but so far have still failed to find a way to recoup the unallocated space back into the extended partition.

if necessary, i'll do it the painful long winded way of backing up and starting the extended partition again from scratch, but i really rather wouldnt have to do that. i'm sure there must be a way of telling the extended partition to once again reach the end of the drive.
I am not really sure if the title makes any sense or if it even possible. Basically I am currently triple booting with Mac osx on the first partition windows 7 on the second and ubuntu linux on the 3rd with a swap partition. So basically on my 2TB harddrive
Mac (200gb) Windows (200gb) Linux (200gb) Swap (8gb) NTFS(1592gb)
The last partition is formatted as ntfs using Gparted, windows cannot detect it. The windows disk partitioner shows the swap and ntfs partitions as unformatted. I can unformat the space and use the windows partition to add format it as ntfs but it would format the linux swap partition as well. I am worried that it could potentially screw up everything on my harddrive. My question is. What do I need to do to get the ntfs parition recognized by windows (should I use the windows partitioner)?
I want to convert a vfat partition into an ext4 partition. This is on my wife's machine and she deleted the Windoze partition as she now prefers Linux. Here is the (edited) output from fdisk -l:-

I want to change /dev/sda4 to 83 to free up space for Linux without losing the partitions in this 'extended' partition!
I formatted a 16GB USB flash drive via right click. Then I ran gparted and got as far as this [image attached] Do I choose Primary Partition or Extended Partition for this second partition?
I am relatively new to Linux and Opensuse. I created the / root partition and now it is growing and maxing out. I have partitioner available to me but how do I change the partition size when the root partition is mounted. Do I login as root and then umount or modify fstab and restart and change from command line or do I format and reinstall everything? I have room to expand but not sure how to manage this?
I just looked at the "posting permissions" and unfortunately I'm unable to insert the screen copy of the kde manager's representation of the goal I want to hit.I got a dual boot system with 4 hard disks and grub installed on /dev/sdd1. Windows xp sp2 (only used for professional audio tools, don't whip me ^^) is installed on /dev/sdc1. The disk sdc is partitioned with the following settings:

When I partitioned the disk I was believing 4 Go were sufficient for windows xp but after years I realized that many applications were using the C: by default (no way to change it thru regedit or another workaround, hard-coding probably) installing stuffs and under windows this is impossible to use such blessed things like the unix's symbolic links !So right now I'm a little tight with the remaining space to work with windows xp. (Of course the swap file has been moved to another partition since the first day I installed xp...)
I have is to use the 7Go of unused space on this disk to size up the /dev/sdc1 partition. When using kde partition manager I noticed that there is no way to use the unused disk space to size up /dev/sdc1 directly.Do you think if I create a partition with the 7 Go of unused space that there is a way to size up /dev/sdc1 without messing up the bootloader ? I don't think GRUB matters about the new partition, it should get the /dev/sdc7 entry. For the backup there is no problem this partition is completely backed up every two weeks (as an image) so the datas may not be lost as a real catastrophic... but if there is danger for the other partitions... that's will be more annoying... but solvable ^^
Once partitioned I believe that there will be a way to "merge" the /dev/sdc1 and /dev/sdc7 partitions and then I would enjoy a new xp partition with 7Gb of free space (it would change from my actual 300Mb !!).Technically it would be possible this is just a question of chaining the different blocks each others and refer to the new space added.The last block in /dev/sdc1 would point to the first block that starts /dev/sdc7 and "that's all"... and /dev/sdc7 would disappear as a partition.
i have got an old computer with some partition and one have linux slackware installed; it is all included there (root and a swap file); its size is almost 4 gb. Now i have a new laptop and i do not really want to reinstall linux on it; simply i want to transfer all things from old on new computer. The size of new hd is almost 12 Gb and i want to use entire with linux slackware. I will recompile new kernel on old computer for the new. Now, i think to use dd to make one image, this follow command may be good, i think:"dd if=/dev/hda3 of=./linux_slackaware.img bs=4096 conv=noerror"I use zipslack on msdos partition (hda2) to run this command; it will make a 4 gb file image partition;Now i ask you:it is possible to transfer and to adapt this image partition on a different size image partition?The new is 12 gb size.what are the right dd command parametres?
Right now i have a HP DL 180 Server with 130 Gb Hard Disk & 8 Gb ram after Raiding0+1. i want to configure Domain Controller Server for my office for 200 to 300 Users. what should the partition size must be mentioned in my 130 Gb Hard Disk, is that going to be Sufficient for ME ?

I want to configure Name Server i.e., DNS to my red hat linux box in a production enviromnt.The ram is 2 GB and Hard Disk size is 200 GB. How much space should I give /var, /usr, /boot, /root and home partition. May be I am wrong in partition point of view while installing fresh red hat but to install for home purpose and server end is different. I'm currently setting up a server with 2x 1TB disks in raid1. (Centos 5.5)In the future, if the storage is insufficient and I decide to upgrade the disks to 2x 2TB, could I just:
- dump ghost image of the array on usb drive - replace hdd's and build new array - ghost array with image created previously
Would the above work, will the new partition automatically resize to 2TB or do I need to partition right now with LVM? would it work with LVM?
Server have extended partition size around 490 GB. I want to spilt the extended partition to each two partition(ut0 & ut1) size 100 GB. How to split the extended partition in Redhat linux 5?
I downloaded Ubuntu about 5 months ago and love it.Problem is, I didn't know if I wanted to make it permanent on my computer, so I used the option which allowed me to download it as an application on my Windows Vista Control Panel.How can I increase the partition (I think I only have 9 GB left on my home folder) without loosing all of the preferences, applications, and hardware solutions that I have put on there?
I'm trying to create an extended partition. In GParted, I shrunk the size of the existing partition and now want to create a new EXTENDED partition in the free, unallocated space. GParted only lets me create a PRIMARY partition. What am I doing wrong here?

You can actually ignore the flag for the swap as "boot." That was me just messing around trying to get it to work. I've removed that flag. Not sure how the question of boot affects all of this...maybe it factors in somehow.
I somehow messed up my filesystem. I installed Ubuntu directly with LVM. This created an extended partition including a logical one. When I run out of space, I just increased my space (through VMware) and then added a new PRIMARY partition.
Then I added this one to the volumegroup and increased the logical volume. After I did this a few times, there were no longer any primary partitions allowed (only 4). Then I resized the FS, resized the logical volume, resized the volume group, and removed the physical volume. Now I'm no longer able to create an extended volume (only one) but it's not at the end (there are other primary partitions behind this one at the disk), so I'm not able to create some logical volumes.
What is the best possibility to add some space to the LVM and being able to do this a few times in the future again?

There was a /dev/sda3 at the end of the disk. I already deleted this partition.
So the order on the disk is: sda1 | sda2 (extended) | sda5 (logical referred in sda2) | sda4 | free space
Does it matter that there is type "Linux" for sda4 or can I without damaging the lvm just change it (with cfdisk) to "Linux LVM"?
Two days ago I want to expand the free room for my C: partition on my laptop, i thought that just shrink the D: partition and expand the C: and the problem solved, but it's not solved, the C: remains and can't be expanded. so i merge the D: again,but the D: status become an extended partition
After all, next morning I boot into Ubuntu and my D: are not available in "Places" menu in Ubuntu just the C: partition, so I boot from Win7 and run CHKDSK /f to my D: partition, but it's gave me no effects

I recently decided to resize a partition on my HDD (partition on which Ubuntu was previously installed).This was in order to remove Ubuntu from one of my HDD. I got rid of the Grub loader by booting on my windows system recovery disk and using Bootrec.exe/FixMbr and my computer now boots directly into windows. I then deleted the Ubuntu partition.
To get to the heart of the problem, I am trying to move the free space that is in the extended partition out and merge it with C. I tried doing this with my Gparted liveCD but it didn't work. I didnt have anything to save the error message onto, but I will try the process again when I get home and save the error onto my external drive so that I can post it here.
