Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound After Clean Install Of 10.04?
May 24, 2010
I've just done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 after using 8.10 for a couple of years. (I have to say that after 2 years, the problems I encountered when first installing 8.10 remain in 10,04 but now with additional sound problems !) I use an Acer Aspire 5720 and sound *WORKED* under 8.10 fine. Now I have done a clean install of 10.04 all I get are the bongos at the login then nothing. I can't play any sound files etc. The card is recognised but something is wrong. Here are the results of some commands I have given :
Code:
aplay -l

card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC268 Analog [ALC268 Analog]

Acer travelmate 4200, had no sound since a full install (not upgrade) of Karmic. Sound has worked in all previous incarnations of Ubuntu. When I try to play Audio CD I can hear a click from the speakers but only silence after that. CD plays OK if booted in XP or Win7. Output from aplay -l

I've installed a clean Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on my ThinkPad T61, and everything seems to be OK, but I am unable to get any sound output at all (internal speakers and external audio).
No system sounds, no sound from Movie Player, Rythmbox, Sound Recorder.
On my previous Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 I had no problems with sound (as far as I can recall).
Any hints to what I should do to try to get sound output?
The output from various sound related commands included below.
Code:
$ sudo lshw -C sound
*-multimedia
description: Audio device
product: 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller

videos videos work great, but unfortunately, when i try to access videos on hulu.com, i receive this error message: "we're sorry but we're unable stream this video to your system. this may be due to an adobe software limitation on 64-bit linux systems."
this is strange because hulu videos were working after i installed lynx but mysteriously stopped working. i don't have the swfdec-mozilla package installed nor the mozilla-plugin-gnash nor the flashplugin-installer.
what do i need to do to start clean and install the necessary packages?

1 - Make a clean install of Squeeze.
2- Upgrade to sid
3- Run this command after installing xserver:
aptitude install kdm kde-10n-es kdebase
Then aptitude installs kdm, kdebase... and brasero, metacity, gvfs, gnome-control-center, evolution... (¿?) I only want to install KDE, why aptitude also install all this gnome crap ? And I say crap because I only want to install the KDE desktop, I use Gnome in my laptop =/ If you uncheck install recommends in aptitude you can make a clean KDE install.

I just installed the latest version, updated it and everything, but I can't get my sound to work. I have an onboard sound card, and a Soundblaster too.
Here are the lspci results:

And the aplay -l results:

I'd like to be able to get my Soundblaster to work, cause I plan on dual booting with WinXp, but if the only way is the onboard way, I'm cool with it.

I am trying to set my computer up to do sound sequencing. I want to plug my MIDI keyboard in and record with a sequencer. Running 10.04, was following a tutorial on installing JACK, and my audio stopped working. Since then, I've gone through all guides I can find, some advising an upgrade of ALSA, some saying to use OCC. I've tried both, but nothing seems to work.
I suspect it may have something to do with libjack0. I could not install jackd because it claimed libjack0 to be the wrong version, and for some reason I couldn't upgrade. So I uninstalled libjack0, then installed jackd, which automatically included the version of libjack0 it wanted. After that, I could get the JACK server running, but the computer had no sound.
I will post whatever logs or information necessary to troubleshoot, but I don't know exactly how or what to post. If you need logs, please tell me how to get them.

I had sound. My sound stops working after install jack. Jack server starts well, and the jack log shows no error messages. If I run Muse, it recognizes jack and show no error messages, but I have no sound output. Where should I start investigating? I'm using Karmic.

My sound was working fine when I was trying out Ubuntu on a partition, I was so chuffed with it I did a fresh install. I have no sound. VLC, Amarok, Clementine, Audacity, Audacious, every audio player in the Ubuntu Universe doesn't play sound. Obviously it's something 'hardware' or 'driver' connected because it all worked perfectly when I still had Windows as the 'host' partition. I'm not going back to Windows I'll try out OpenSuse or something to see if the sound thing happens on that.

I just installed karmic on my media server. With Jaunty, everything worked fine. I tried an upgrade, and go no sound. After poking around in the forms and trying some solutions still no sound.
So I decided to try a fresh install, again, no sound. I have cheched the obvious, mixer volumes, mute, output device, etc. But I can't seem to get it to work. I poked around in the forms and I've tried many of the solutions, but still no luck.

I spent 2 hours with Sam on IRC #Ubuntu and went through a very involved investigation of the problem. At the end, still no sound. The sound worked perfectly before the Adobe upgrade. To be clear, now have no sound period, no system sound, no playback sound, no sound online, offline, nada.I am running Ubuntu 10.04, which I don't want to update at this time. I'm running this OS on a desktop PC and have no idea what sound card I have.I recently installed a new ALSA mixer and have checked to be sure nothing is muted. I've read through a ton of posts and so far have found nothing that exactly solves this

I had installed Ubuntu 9.04 yesterday evening and made a dual boot with windows Vista. After installing the Ubuntu i opened update manager and started the updates and after half hour, some of the updates were done but the sound and multimedia package was not installed. Then i played a song and ubuntu asked me to install 2 packages for that and after i made a confirmation to that, it shows that it is unable to install the package.

I've never had any problems before, but I just did a fresh install of 10.04.1 on a brand new drive yesterday. I noticed this morning that I have no sound drivers(under the hardware tab of sound preferences, there is nothing listed). I found a thread that had this line to run:
Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
And I got:
Code:
Codec: Realtek ALC888
Not sure what to do now though.

I will tell you this: The hard ware is a MSI mother board [AMD flavored] [exact numbers, not known at the moment, but can be recovered]. The audio is built into the mother board. It worked fine with Ubuntu 10.04 I read a few posts here and there, and ran a hardware diagnostic. It came back and said no sound card was installed.

Just installed OpenSUSE 11.4, and so far I love everything about it, the only thing that's not working is the sound. I have my sound card setup in YaST -> Sound like I always have, and it recognizes it as M-Audio Delta Audiophile 24/96. I also installed alsa-tools-gui to get Envy24Control for ICE1712 chipsets, and I unmuted all the outputs, and raised the DAC volume. My speakers are on, and all the cables check out. Here is all my multimedia information:

Did a clean install with 11.2 after being very impressed with the LiveCD. After installation process finished, laptop booted up and I had a green screen, no icons and a mouse cursor. REALLY liked the way the OS performed on the LIVECD and would like to give it a real shot.I can install Fedora 11, Ubuntu, Madriva and Mint Linux with no problem on the same Toshiba laptop.

There are several posts here about not being able to boot without the install disk, which is also my case. I imagine the solution for me should be easy, because I only have a single installed OS on this machine, which is a MacBook Pro 2.1. Here's the result of fdisk -l:
Code:
WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
[Code]...
Partition table entries are not in disk order sda4 is a partition that did not appear in the partition overview when I installed the operating system. I thought I'd look for help here while I continue to research the problem myself.

I just switched back to openSUSE from Fedora linux. I made a clean install of openSUSE 11.4, but had trouble when installing the boot loader. For whatever reason the auto-partition tool hadn't given me a /boot partition even though the GRUB configuration referenced it. So I switched the / partition to /boot and the /home to / and now I don't have a /home partition. Is this why my system won't boot past the splash screen in "normal" mode, but boots fine in "failsafe"?
