On install I have no problem adding myself back to the system,but when try to add the other users who already have a home folder but no logon, I get an error saying the other accounts are already in use, but they still have no way to log on
Anyone successfully using VNC client on a Mac to control a Debian server?I have the vncserver setup on the Debian machine properly. But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.
I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.
I have a triple boot system with Windows XP, Debian Lenny, and Fedora in that order as far as the disk partitions, and Lenny's grub controlling the multiboot. This has worked well for yearsRecently the Debian got corrupted with someependency issues, and I want to install Squeeze inplace of the existing LennyI don't need to save anything from the Lenny). Is this possible, usinga startup install CD for on-line installation of Squeeze over the Lenny partitions, and also without disturbing the Windows and Fedora boots? If it is, are there any manual steps to be taken during
the installation?
I am having a prolbem with my ubuntu 9.10 operating system. Is there anyway I can roll back the setting and files that I deleted previously without totaly reinstalling the system.

Ive recently been looking into other distros and came across arch linux. As i installed arch it was recommended that you create partitions for various directories, such as boot, tmp etc.
Ive read the advantages of this and would now like to set ubuntu up in a similar fashion, alongside arch. Whats the 'best' way to do this. Can ubuntu use the partitions set up by arch? Will i have to reinstall ubuntu? eh i dont know if my question makes sense since its late here and its a topic i know little about. To put it simply: how do you create a multi-partitioned system running both ubuntu and arch

For every other users than me/root.
When I reinstall my distro (MEPIS, for the last 2.5 years), making my new user account preserve all the old account's settings has always been a difficult and very messy process, especially if I have installed a new copy on another partition. (I'm doing that soon, so I have this copy as a backup until I have everything the way I want it on the new copy.) Most of my stuff gets saved, but not everything. The biggest problem is that, even if I select "preserve data in /home" in the MEPIS installer, my keyboard shortcuts become unusable (not completely erased) under odd circumstances. They're still listed in file /home/josh/kde/share/config/khotkeysrc, but they still can't be used, and I have to open hhotkeysrc and manually delete them and then reenter them in the menu editor (the K menu, by the way, gets completely overwritten).
I can't just overwrite the entire new user account with the old one; I've tried, and something goes wrong so that the new account can't be opened (probably because some important files are inaccessible--I can't tell which ones they become inaccessible).Anyway, is there a program that can preserve all the user account settings neatly for a new installation of the distro? I am supposing there is a program or at least a method, because I never hear others complaining about this problem. I probably don't know something I should know.
I'm a noob with Linux. I was trying to disable pulseaudio, I went to synaptic software and mark pulseaudio server for uninstallation, then mark ALL on the next screen.... afterward, my skype works fine. however, after i reboot, it only boots to prompt....
anyway i can fix it without reinstalling?
I'm wondering if there's a way so that several people can log onto my computer at the same time. When they connect it goes to the login screen and they choose their account and log in. Everybody has a different account and sees a different desktop. Is that possible?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Fedora onto a computer that has Windows XP on the first of two SATA drives. Windows 7 is on the second drive.
I installed Fedora no problems on a 14 gig free space I created on the first drive and told it where and what my other OS's were. Fine so far. I didn't tell it to overwrite the MBR on the XP (first) drive. I took the second option which I "think" put the boot loader on the fedora partition.
All good - till I rebooted and I just saw my Windows 7 loader with my options for XP and Windows 7 but no Fedora.
So, if I overwrite the MBR on the first drive, will that mean I can't access my Windows 7 installation?
How SHOULD I set up the boot loader?
I have accidentally removed my /boot partition(when installing grub using LiveCD i'm typing "rm -rf /boot" instead of "rm -rf boot") After that i have installed grub, have to reinstalled latest kernel(2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686) using rpm(and 2nd time using yum) but result the same: i can't boot into my system. Unfortunately, i can't copy&paste log, but booting stopped after something like a:
mounting /proc
mounting /sysfs
Creating /dev
then kernel finds keyboard and mouse and... and nothing. Is it possible to restore my system without reinstalling distro?
Is there any way to reinstall Windows Vista on the second partition without reinstalling Fedora on the main partition? I always reinstall Vista because of the performance issue.

It looks like it logs off OK and is on its way to the main login screen but never gets there. I found some older posts describing this problem but no solution. I tried to post to that thread but got a message saying I was not permitted. I am new to Linux and am struggling to figure out how to problem solve issues in Ubuntu.

It has all my MP3s, etc. I would love to be able to control the sound output of that machine from multiple computers. Subsonic ([URL]... comes close -- it has the base functionality that I need (web control of server sound) However, I'm looking for something that handles the multi-user part better. Specifically, would like my users (children, wife) to have their own play lists and ratings. Would love if the tool could select from all of our favorites when I wanted to play music with dinner (including vetoes for the stuff some of ushate). And it doesn't seem like Subsonic allows rating at the song level.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've really borked up my Gimp. I'm running 10.04 64-bit and had at some point installed gimp but don't recall how or where I got it from. The strange part is that neither Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Center showed it as being installed.
Anyway, it started misbehaving (locking up) so I figured I'd uninstall and reinstall. That's when I discovered that the system didn't show it as being installed at all. Needless to say, I couldn't uninstall it so I decided to just reinstall over the top through Ubuntu Software Center. The installation seemed to complete normally but when I tried running it I got an error stating that there was a version mismatch for libgimp and suggesting that maybe I had gimp installed in both /usr and /usr/local. Not knowing what else to do, I uninstalled via Ubuntu Software Center and then removed all gimp related files from both /usr and /usr/local. Lastly, I reinstalled again via the Software Center.
Now when I try to launch gimp I get a box in the panel's Window List titled "Starting Gimp Image Editor" but shortly thereafter it disappears and I'm back to the desktop. I've even tried it all over again but utilizing Synaptic for the final install (as well as apt-get) with the same result - it tries to load and then... nothing. I must have deleted something essential when rooting around in /usr and /usr/local that is not replaced by reinstalling gimp but I have no idea what or where. So now what do I do? I really need gimp installed on this machine. I do have a full system backup but it's a couple of weeks old and I don't want to lose all of the changes that I've made to the system since then.
My family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?

One of our F14 machines was originally set-up with the i386 Kernel. I found out it had a kernel crash and the person tried to fix it by reinstalling the kernel, unfortunately they installed i686. Now some of our software that was setup to work with i386 is not cooperating. Is there a way to switch from the i686 kernel to i386 without reinstalling the system?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIm running 11.2-64 with the stock KDE (3.5) included with the distro. Recently I messed about attempting an update of Amarok and phonon to get the graphic EQ back for music playback. The "messing about" was not with the one click install offered on the KDE website for 4.4.2.....and interestingly the messing about was the day before they "released" 4.4.2-- with the result that I ended up. trashing" the system and having to reload (didnt loose /home tho another reason why I love SUSe....)anyway I ve been looking around and have seen problems mentioned on the KDE forum with multi monitors in their 4.x desktop environment....it is tempting to "just push the button" on the 4.4.2 install and see what happens but Im not sure I want to spend another few hours here repairing things where I have my workspace back.
This machine is used in my home office, a core quad with 2 GB of RAM, Intel motherboard and a pair of NVidia GT 8500 PCIe cards running 3 monitors..... am curious if anyone is using 4.4.2 in a multi monitor environment, how the upgrade went and any problems with X server with the new environment?

In a multi-OS desktop, having Windows, Ubuntu and Fedora, what is the root filesystem as the root directory is located on at least 2 of the OS.
I had 9.04, then upgraded to 9.10. After screwing it up, it won't boot. Is it possible to just reinstall Ubuntu using the CD? Cause then I would get GRUB 2. I installed kde-desktop, then it failed to boot (I selected KDM) and that somehow screwed it up.

Windows also has an option similar to this to specify how many processor cores to use for boot.

There are lots of OSs and Linux dists to install on your netbook, and I want to make it as easy as possible to install, remove and switch between them.
Just installing a dist and then another one after it will replace the GRUB boot screen every time, and some dists might override previous GRUB menus entirely.
On a previous machine I created a GRUB partition which chain-loads GRUB for each dist, but now I can't remember how I did it.
The hard drive is currently empty, since I started playing around with repartitioning. What is the easiest way to install GRUB to a partition? Links are welcome, but please no generic "install GRUB" guides because the ones I've found haven't been relevant to my particular situation (empty hard drive, multi boot environment, no CD/floppy)..
I have a laptop running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and I need to upgrade to the new Ubuntu, I order to get complete use of my hardware. Usually when I install a new version of Ubuntu, I have the opportunity to use my old partitioning, but now I can only use the entire disk or create a new partition table.
The laptop has other partitions that is a data and a Windows partition as I want to preserve.
How can I install the new Ubuntu on the old Ubuntu partition and preserve the data on other partitions?
I recently had to reinstall Windows XP and as usual it destroyed my grub setup. I have done this before, so I simply booted from a live CD and typed this in the terminal:

> setup(hd0)
> quit
Now, the problem with it this time is that in the past in these situations I had only Ubuntu Feisty and Windows XP installed on my machine. But I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a separate partition (retaining the old 7.04 installation separately) since I last had to reinstall XP. Doing the above procedure restores my grub sttings to my pre-9.04 installation (i.e. I only get Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows XP in the grub menu).
I've installed Remastersys on my Dell Mini and created a custombackup.iso which which runs Ubuntu 10.04 perfectly from both CD and usb flashdrive.
However, since backing up my complete HDD a problem has arisen with my wireless connection and I now want to reinstall the cloned copy of my OS onto my HDD.
The question is: how? Whether I use Ubuntu's disk creator, unetbootin or penlinuxdrive, booting from the flashdrive does not offer me an 'install' option.
