View 9 Replies View RelatedAnyone successfully using VNC client on a Mac to control a Debian server?I have the vncserver setup on the Debian machine properly. But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.
I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.
I want to limit what a authenticated user can do on my Linux server. I've set the default shell to rbash, but I know a knowledgeable user can switch shells. Can I use file permissions to deny execution rights to /bin/bash to anyone who is not in a particular group? And if that works, how do I find out what other shells are installed on my server (Ubuntu 9.10)?

Apache is run as www as is all the files/folders. People are uploading via FTP, scp, so the problem is if I chmod so everyone can read, then rsync as a user it works until new files are added which then my ; if rsync fails with a permission denied. Now I can add a chmod in the script so everyone can read, but since www can already read, I figured I would just change my script to use www. I added the ssh key to his authorized_keys file, but when I try to just ssh in I see this in the secure file;
server sshd[29539]: User www not allowed because account is locked
sshd[29539]: Failed none for invalid user www from ip port 54983 ssh2
Now I read a few places already saying I need to add a password to the account, etc. but before I jump and try all I read, 1st major one, will this now break apache? Will this affect any startup things, etc. and .... will that unlock that user for ssh in or is there another preferred method?
I installed SSH-keygen dependancies for a /chroot user.
I can now execute ssh-keygen from the /chroot user BUT I receive a message PRNG is not seeded.
When I do it from any of the users that are not /chroot users, it works fine.
I'm wondering if there's a way so that several people can log onto my computer at the same time. When they connect it goes to the login screen and they choose their account and log in. Everybody has a different account and sees a different desktop. Is that possible?

It has all my MP3s, etc. I would love to be able to control the sound output of that machine from multiple computers. Subsonic ([URL]... comes close -- it has the base functionality that I need (web control of server sound) However, I'm looking for something that handles the multi-user part better. Specifically, would like my users (children, wife) to have their own play lists and ratings. Would love if the tool could select from all of our favorites when I wanted to play music with dinner (including vetoes for the stuff some of ushate). And it doesn't seem like Subsonic allows rating at the song level.

On install I have no problem adding myself back to the system,but when try to add the other users who already have a home folder but no logon, I get an error saying the other accounts are already in use, but they still have no way to log on

I have Lucid setup for multi user. Whenever 2 users are logged in and one logs off, it freezes on a black screen. It looks like it logs off OK and is on its way to the main login screen but never gets there. I found some older posts describing this problem but no solution. I tried to post to that thread but got a message saying I was not permitted. I am new to Linux and am struggling to figure out how to problem solve issues in Ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?

I have a few multi-user servers in an academic laboratory. I am having a problem with some users maxing out the available RAM, causing such sever slowdowns the machine essentially crashes. My servers are Dell Power Edge's running Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition (Not my choice). I would like to set a maximum limit on the amount of ram a user can utilize. This morning I experimented with setting limits via /etc/security/limits.conf and using ulimit. Neither of them prevented my test program, a simple infinite loop of mallocs, from crashing the server.

I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or

Original HOWTO can be found at: [URL]... So the other day I was in IRC and someone had brought up a problem where they created a new Administrative user, but didnt have rights to use sudo. Looked into the problem a little bit to figure out what was wrong, and it turns out that when you create a new user through the user manager (in kubuntu, anyways. Havent tested in Gnome.) the user gets added to the adm group, however, a quick look at the sudoers file shows that its looking for users in the admin group to allow the use of sudo. So, to solve the problem we do the following: If youre on the new admin user (which Im assuming you are) use the following commands:

sudo usermod -G admin [username of new admin account without brackets]
exit
Then simply logout, and then log back in (not always necessary, but the easiest way to flush the permissions.)

Means were going to Switch User to the old admin account

This simply adds the admin group to the secondary group list for the new user

I wanted to create an user but don't allow it to see the other user's home folder so I made chmod 0750 /home/folder and it worked fine so I went ahead and decided to completely forbid access to the root folder and I had the "great" idea to make chmod 0750 /, and now I'm having problems with wine and other applications, in example I used to have a folder in this address 209.239.114.51/mmgr but now it's giving me errors and if I try to run some applications I got error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal"

1. My laptop automatically get logged in without asking user name and password.
2. I tried to change password for newly created user and root user using graphical way but it does not work.
2. I can perform administrator task using only OEM user which is default inbuilt user of mint.
How can make my laptop to ask password when mint get booted? How to change password for other users?

It's a nuisance having to change folders and I can't configure wastebin to empty on exit.And I can't get kmail to import from evolution. For instance, on a Mac/Windows machine, i would just rename the existing user profile [home dir], and then just log back in as the user - job done. On OpenSuse/Linux, it seems it does not work that way..?! When i try to rename my home folder to say me.old via root, and log back in as me, i get all kinds of errors. Opensuse does create a new home dir, but it appears not properly.
