General :: Manually Installing A New Kernel?
Feb 15, 2010
For some reason, my kernel got uninstalled. I have only file called "initrd.img-2.6.26-1-xen-amd64.bak" in my /boot folder. The only other thing is a 'grub' folder. I booted into a rescue OS, but is there a way to install a kernel manually so that I can boot into my original OS again? Can I just download a vmlinuz file into that folder and then fix my menu.lst?

I usually use Ubuntu as a way of accessing my hard drive when Windows 7 crashes. I now want to reinstall Ubuntu on my hard drive as a seperate OS on its own partition.
I installed Windows 7 already, and I allocated about 60gb for Ubuntu. The problem now is manually arranging the different options in the Ubuntu partitioning menu. I tried the automatic installation but I was unhappy with the fact that it merged my W7 and the Ubuntu installation on a partition.

I'm running lucid, and I want GIMP, because it's what I used when I was packing Windows but, I'm not sure what I need as far as the .debs go, or the order to do it in, as I'm sure there's things that have to be installed before others, and I have no internet at my home, which is why I'm doing things the hard way.

I'd like to upgrade the kernel in the ISO of a Ubuntu 9.10-based CD with proprietary applications, burn a new CD with this modified ISO, boot up with it, upgrade + add + remove modules and applications, and finally save the running system into a new ISO file which would now have the latest and greatest.
I have a couple of questions: 1. How can I download the kernel manually? Where can I find the latest vmlinuz + initrd files for Ubuntu 9.10?
2. Is it just a matter of replacing those two files, or are there other dependencies I should update in the rest of the ISO, eg. isolinuxisolinux.cfg: Change initrd.gz to initrd.lz, etc.?

I haven't used Linux very much, so I'm not sure how to do this. I'm presently running the 2.6.24-26 version of the Linux kernel on Ubuntu. However, I need to upgrade to 2.6.32. I have the source files (arch, block, firmware, drivers, kernel, include, etc), but I have no idea how to change the source of the kernel, or if there's an easier/automatic way to do this, and I specifically need the 2.6.32 version.

So researching how to install Tomcat 6, I ran across a guide that specifically states there are issues with the repository version of Tomcat. Doing some more research it seems like this is reported in multiple places including a disussion on the official mailing list that was inconclusive. So my question is, if this is intended for a production server should I use the repository one or manually install it

I made a bit of a schoolboy error with Ubuntu. I was without an internet connection so attempted to install OpenShot manually, using .debs. Naturally there were too many dependencies to chase up but I did install some of them...! Now my connection is back i tried to install openshot (from the recommended ppa) as well as upgrading vlc (from the recommended ppa). Naturally OpenShot won't install as I have my dependencies all over the place. I was wondering if there was a way to track and uninstall/purge the last few manually installed packages, and if then installing openshot would proceed normally.
Here was the relevant output:
Code:
crow@nest-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install openshot openshot-doc vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc

To run my other linux distros on another drive I have been manually entering the kernel and initrid info for each distro on the opensuse yast boot loader. For windows 7 it just runs the mbr on the drive windows 7 is on. However I can not get it to do that on the other linux drive. The problem for me is that on every kernel upgrade I have to manually change the info. I would rather have grub on the sdd linux disk take care of it on the upgrades. The drive that holds the other linux versions is sdd. Opensuse is on sdc.

I am using Ubuntu minimum 9.10 and I would need to add a network driver. I was told that it is the safest way to rebuild the kernel that includes this driver. I built the kernel and loaded it to my Ubuntu minimal. The network now works. However, during bootup time, I got the following error messages.
[Code]...
1. Can Linux gurus tell me what they are?
2. Also, I use bootchart to check the performance, somehow, in the first 5-6 seconds, nothing happens. I would assume that there is a time-out, but I do not know what is happening.
3. Ubuntu minimum uses kernel 2.6.31.22, and I use a later version, 2.6.33.5. Should I use 2.6.31.22 or 2.6.33.5?

I have downloaded the newest most stable Linux kernel, 2.6.33.2.
I thought I would test this using VirtualBox. So I create a dynamically sized harddisk of 4 GB. And installed CentOS 5.3 with just the minimum packages.
I setup the make menuconfig with just the default settings.
After that I ran make and got the following error:
The amount of space I have left is:
My virtual size is 4 GB, but the actual size is 3.5 GB.
How much size should I give when compiling and installing a Linux kernel? Are there any guidelines to follow when doing this? This is my first time, so just experimenting with this.

I am compiling kernel to learn it and as well as for edubook, a netbook I am working on. I wanted to put the compilation under my home directory and followed the syntax suggested in the README in /usr/src/linux,like,
Quote:
'make o=/home/pbhat/temp/kcompile menuconfig'
Like this I have gone through full compilation successfully, but see no output going to the specified folder.Could anybody point out where I went wrong? I was compiling under /usr/src/linux and in Opensuse 11.2.I followed the README apparently written by Linus where I saw the above make syntax.Maybe that is old and hold good no more.

I am trying to install ndiswrapper, and have gotten as far as extracting the .gz file. However, when I type in the "make" command, it returns the error message:
Cannot find kernel version in /usr/src/linux-2.6.21.5, is it configured? Stop.
I do not have anything in the folder /usr/src, so I don't know where it might be. I'd like to install this, so it will make my switch to Linux easier.

The Network Manager on KDE gets DNS configuration from DHCP and sets it automatically, but I would like to use the Google Public DNS. If I overwrite /etc/resolv.conf with nameserver 8.8.8.8 it still resolves names with the old DNS (probably cached in memory) and, of course, even if it worked, it would be annoying having to do that every time I connect to a network.
I've noticed the Network Manager lets you specify a fixed DNS with the rest being taken from DHCP, but that's on a per network basis, and I would like to set it once for whichever network I connect to (if you're on the go with a laptop that becomes an issue).

A. I want to manually set the Window Clamp for my experiment.I came to know we can do that in net/ipv4/tcp_output.c::tcp_grow_window. I'm really confused with the flow. Even i tried in net/ipv4/tcp_output.c::tcp_select_window, but things are asusual.
B. Can I really improve the throughput by increasing the buffer space ? Do i have to go for netfileters or altering the existing data structure will do ?

My AWSTATS is not updating correctly. Upon closer look I noticed that the access_log file is already >300MB. logrotate was not running. Now I have enabled log rotate. However, it's not touching this existing access_log file. Is there a way for me to manually split and rotate this file into 3 100MB files, access_log.1 access_log.2 and access_log.3? I tried running logrotate (logrotate /home/user/httpd/access_log) from console and it's throwing Segmentation fault.
