I haven't used Linux very much, so I'm not sure how to do this. I'm presently running the 2.6.24-26 version of the Linux kernel on Ubuntu. However, I need to upgrade to 2.6.32. I have the source files (arch, block, firmware, drivers, kernel, include, etc), but I have no idea how to change the source of the kernel, or if there's an easier/automatic way to do this, and I specifically need the 2.6.32 version.
View 2 RepliesI'd like to upgrade the kernel in the ISO of a Ubuntu 9.10-based CD with proprietary applications, burn a new CD with this modified ISO, boot up with it, upgrade + add + remove modules and applications, and finally save the running system into a new ISO file which would now have the latest and greatest.
I have a couple of questions: 1. How can I download the kernel manually? Where can I find the latest vmlinuz + initrd files for Ubuntu 9.10?
2. Is it just a matter of replacing those two files, or are there other dependencies I should update in the rest of the ISO, eg. isolinuxisolinux.cfg: Change initrd.gz to initrd.lz, etc.?
I'm seeking for a site to manually download the source of the kernel 2.6.31-14-generic for Ubuntu 9.10. I did search through the addresses listed in my /etc/apt/sources.list file but that was of no help. So could somebody please give me a precise address to download from?
View 4 Replies View RelatedTo run my other linux distros on another drive I have been manually entering the kernel and initrid info for each distro on the opensuse yast boot loader. For windows 7 it just runs the mbr on the drive windows 7 is on. However I can not get it to do that on the other linux drive. The problem for me is that on every kernel upgrade I have to manually change the info. I would rather have grub on the sdd linux disk take care of it on the upgrades. The drive that holds the other linux versions is sdd. Opensuse is on sdc.

I'm trying to create packets with modified source and destination IP and ports. Well, I'm using a raw socket from <sys/socket.h> to do this. I create, everything is fine, but when I send the packet, I see with the wireshark that the source IP is not the spoofed one, but the real one.. It means that, before to send the packet, something in the kernel is doing this change. which part of the kernel is doing this and how can I deactivate this? Also, my distro: Debian Sid.

I have since tried the HOWTO: Install Azureus (newest, non-repo way) method of installing Vuze/Azureus, which I think is what I set up for 9.04, and also a synaptic complete removal and reinstall which didn't work.
I have an .azureus folder in my home dir which I would like to keep because it contains my settings and half downloaded torrents etc.
I would be happy to use the the synaptic packaged version of Vuze because it is much more up to date than it has been in the past.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have one machine where I have several versions installed on different partitions. The base partition (/dev/hda1) is Slack 12.1. On a spare partition (/dev/hdc4) I had installed Slackware64-current. Last week I slackpkg upgraded and installed the 2.6.32.2 kernel, and now that partition will not boot. I know that with the new kernels the hd* designation has been removed, and have already redone that fstab (accessing it from a different boot) to reflect the sd*. Here is the slack64 section of my lilo.conf:

It sounds like he's making a difference between the kernel "source code" and the kernel itself(as in the downloaded file/ files) but the way he talks about both is the same.So then, if one had already "installed" the "kernel sources code," why would he need the "tarball with the newest Linux kernel?" He's already "installed" a kernel, right?

I am running an Hp Pavillion dv6000 with the Broadcom card that never seems to work for Linux. I recently talked with my friend who said he found a way to get it work.following his instructions I opened Synaptic and checked the package bmcwl-kernel-source to be installed.I went through the process of it all and it said it had install successfully. I restarted the computer and when I tried to enter my operating system I got this error "Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block(8,1)"
I have previous versions of Linux on my computer so I can still get in to those if need be but I don't know how to undo what I did or why it isn't working for that matter. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I am getting this error and how I can fix it?
I've been trying to install nvidia drivers yesterday, so I went to runlevel 3, ran the .bin installer and it came up with error: missing kernel-devel and kernel-source.
So I go yum install kernel-devel, it does, but it doesnt find anything like kernel-source.

The situation is that i've been running LAMP servers just fine by installing the web services from the repositories AND the web services from source. However im now in the process of making a PCI-DSS compliant server LAMP server. I've just had the vulnerability scan report back and its failed due to the OpenSSL having vulnerabilities and it tells me I must upgraded to version higher 1.0.0d.

Is it possible to upgrade a Slackware installation from a freshly d-loaded DVD? How would one go about this? Would the procedures in the Upgrade.txt work? I would assume they would need to be modified a bit, though, since I'm only upgrading the same version of Slackware. I'm not going from say 13.1 to 13.37. I just want to update a 13.37 current that I installed about three weeks ago to the now final release 13.37. If I could get my silly Trendnet TEW 423IP wireless PCI card to work in Slack, I could upgrade the normal way with Slackpkg.

View 7 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, my kernel got uninstalled. I have only file called "initrd.img-2.6.26-1-xen-amd64.bak" in my /boot folder. The only other thing is a 'grub' folder. I booted into a rescue OS, but is there a way to install a kernel manually so that I can boot into my original OS again? Can I just download a vmlinuz file into that folder and then fix my menu.lst?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am building a live-cd using live-helper on Karmic (9.10). The process executes fine and I am able to build a live cd of ~200MB in size with minimal and xfce. But things does not work if I try to upgrade the kernel with the one of them from [URL] site. Ubuntu kernel team publishes the kernel for testing and I would like to upgrade the kernel for testing. But when I upgrade the kernel from inside the live-helper's interactive shell, it upgrades fine and iso gets created. While booting, it loads the kernel and errors out with the following message:

I am running initramfs after installing the new kernel (a .deb file) using dpkg.
What else should I need to do for getting this to work?
I have an Ubuntu 8.04 server running 2.6.24-23-server. I have a godaddy account and I am trying to upgrade my os version to 10.04, which requires a kernel upgrade. I have tried ksplice but kernel 2.6.24-23-server is not supported. I have heard about screen sessions but I have not found it possible to reboot one screen while having the other screen stay persistent if it is possible.So the main question is how to update Ubunut 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04 with out rebooting the entire server? Rebooting is completely not an option at the moment.
