General :: Make Disk Druid Take GB Instead Of MB?

Mar 26, 2010

I've tried to reload a server 3 times, every time I try to setup 4 and 6GB partitions through the disk druid gui during RHEL install by entering 4096 and 6144MB, i end up with partitions showing 3.9GB and 5.9GB when i do a df -h after it boots. Is there a way to make disk druid ask for GB instead of MB during the install process so i can just type 4 and 6 and it will show up right in a df -h.

General :: Make PHP Script Use The Second Hard-disk?

May 9, 2011

I have two SATA hard-disk drives attached to my server as shown in the following :

[root@cl-185 /]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 222G 166G 45G 79% /
tmpfs 2.0G 0 2.0G 0% /dev/shm
[root@cl-185 /]# fdisk -l | grep Disk
Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250000000000 bytes
Disk /dev/sdb: 2000.3 GB, 2000398934016 bytes

Now, being a linux noob I need help on two questions :

1). Why only 'sda1' is shown when using df -h to get disk space usage, and what else needs to be done to check stats for 'sdb' ?

2). My PHP script needs to save a lot of 'cache' files, how to make the script use the second disk for saving the files - I mean what path should I edit in my script (current is '/var/www/html/tmp')

General :: Make The Partitions On The Hard Disk?

Jan 4, 2010

I want to make the transition from windows (sick of it). Im using Lenovo G530 Laptop and was wondering which would be the best Linux Os (meaning Ubuntu, fedora or something else). Keep in mind that I mostly use my laptop for college work and a lot of video and audio editing. I also want to be able to run Dual operating system (meaning that I wanna run both Linux and Windows) from the same computer as it might be easier for me to make the transition a little bit more easier. That being said I need someone to give me tutorials (video preferred) on how to make the partitions on the hard disk and step by step instruction on how to install both the two OS in my laptop.

General :: Easiest Way To Make A Backup Of An Entire Hard Disk?

BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.

Ubuntu :: Disk Very Slow After Going From 9.04 To 10.04 / Make It Up?

Oct 1, 2010

My disk is very slow after I installed ubuntu 10.04 over my old 9.04. Doing some tinkering helped a little code...

But it is still far too slow. On the other version, I had a custom partition setup, with the home partition with 100GB, and ext3 (and other partitions for swap, boot, root folder and space for a windows partition I never cared to install ).

This time I am using a standard Lynx setup (2 partitions, the swap and the main one with almost 250Gb, using ext4).

Some applications I develop, that use disk for some unit tests, are now very slow to work with. Is there a way to making it faster? Going back to 9.04? Waiting for 10,10? Gparting and making partitions smaller on ext3? I don't know if any of these will work.

Ubuntu :: Make A Recovery Disk With Clonezilla?

Mar 18, 2010

I am a noob at Ubuntu. I currently have 8.04 and I am looking at upgrading to 8.10 and beyond. I want to make a recovery disk with Clonezilla so if something goes wrong with the upgrade I can go right back to where I am now. I have a 16 Gig thumb drive that I want to boot Clonezilla from. Then I want to burn an image to my DVD burner. I am stuck at one point in the process. I am reading the instructions from[URL]..

This part is where I am stuck is step 4.To make your USB flash drive bootable, first change the working dir, e.g. "cd /media/usb/utils/linux", then run "bash makeboot.sh /dev/sdb1" (replace /dev/sdb1 as your USB flash drive device name), and follow the prompts to finish that. My USB drive is named M-S325 so if I enter cd/ media/M-S325/utils/linux in terminal I get the error no such file or directory. I know it is something stupid simple I am doing wrong, but I am stuck. What do I need to do to make my UBD drive bootable with Clonezilla ?

Ubuntu :: How To Make Startup Disk Of Partition

Sep 17, 2010

I would like to put my ubuntu system (the one on my partition) in a usb drive, so that way I can take it everywhere I go. The reason for this is because all of the programs I have and the configuration I currently have in my ubuntu (I should say "macbuntu"). That is:

burg boot loader (I probably don't need this one!)
x system plymouth theme || also windows 7 original plymouth theme
mac4lin 1.0 aqua GTK theme and emerald theme
mac ultimate icon theme
mac4lin 1.0 cursor theme (working even with compiz)
gnome global menu
compiz packagers ppawith all the extra stuff
telepathy ppa for empathy, having all the extra stuff working
also win2-7-pack_v-9.1
And lots more stuff!

I don't want my personal documents though (text docs, music, videos, pics 'maybe few pics'), just configuration files and programs. Can this even be possible?...

Ubuntu Installation :: Cant Make Start-up Disk With Some OS's

Feb 27, 2011

I have made several start-up disk, just made 2 today, but certain ISO's won't even go into the "start up disk creator" window.I've made them with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ultimate-Edition, Peppermint One & Peppermint Ice, but I can't make one with Puppy, PCLinuxOS, and a couple others.I'm trying to make one with "system rescue cd" so I can use it to totally wipe my 500GiB hdd, before I start to partition & install OS's on it. I downloaded system rescue & saved it to my desktop, but start up disk creator won't let me make a start up usb with it.My questions are...

1. Why does it refuse to make some & not others?

2. I know it's not totally necessary but, is there really any reason to completely wipe it before writing over it? Such as longevity or speed?

Red Hat :: Make A Hard Disk Act Like A Tape Drive?

May 4, 2011

I have a linux server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Update 8) that I need to do some unusual configurations to. I have a hospital application written using a database called MSE. Now the provider of this application says they will only support tape because of the fact that this system is using a specialized backup system. Basically the data is housed on raw_data blocks. So what I am looking to do is create a way to USE the SAN to present the server with Hard Drives and be mounted as if it was a tape. Has anyone tried to do something like this before? If so how did you configure that. One solution that I thought would be to just Present a 2TB lun and carve up several partitions cut not create filesystems on them. Then just create a symlink everynight /dev/rmt0 and rotate out the partitions.

OpenSUSE :: Make Files On CD Writable When Copying To Hard Disk

Jan 3, 2011

I've set up my parents' machine running KDE 4.5 and want them to use the Gwenview import function from the Device Manager popup when transferring image files off photo CDs or other inserted media, since it's the easiest method for them to comprehend. All the files on their photo discs are r-xr-xr-x by default so they're unable to rotate or modify the images once copied to their hard disk. I want to set one specific images folder on their system to automatically force any files placed there to be rw-r--r-- (and rw-rw-r-- for another shared images directory elsewhere). It seems that umask won't work since that can only take permissions away and not add them, and I'd rather avoid getting into messy ACL configuration. Is there a way to achieve this either generically or some hidden config in Gwenview itself? I use KRename myself for such tasks but this is way too complex for my parents to understand so I need something that works without them having to do anything.
