Sep 7, 2010i have been doing a house clearance and come across an old laptop nothing special but its old running windows 95 i think any way i have used dsl b4 as a bak up incase my pc went dawn haw do i get rid of windows and run dsl on this laptop as it only has a floppy drive and a 2.5 gig hard drive its a relik i know this but instead of throwing it away i thout that putting dsl on it i could make a web browser out of it just for fun is it possable to make a bootable floppy to run the new os on the laptop.

I have downloaded the floppy bootable image from the website using a machine a fedora OS machine that does not have a floppy drive. I have even converted the image file to an iso file. I can copy this image file or iso file to the Compaq machine but how do I use it as a bootable floppy? OR how do I create a bootable floppy disk from this image?

Aug 19, 2010I want to make a live USB drive, perhaps even 1 with its own GRUB and a choice of operating systems..Its 16gb so it will fit..or maybe just install multiple desktop environments so I can switch depending on the resoruces of the computer I am using..Gnome>E17>LXDE.But I want it to be a regular account with a root/administrator password, ect. When I use the Startup disk creator or Unetbootin I find that the results are pretty limited. I might as well be using a live CD, but thats not ideal. Alternately, when I just install normally it doesnt always load, even when I hit F8 and tell it to boot from my USB drive.Knoppix based distros seem to work better than Ubuntu based distros in this regard, but I dont want Knoppix I want Ubuntu/Mint and friends.Finally, I have sometimes been having problems 'mounting' or using 'swapon'. Even when I turn on Swap with Gparted Im still not getting the benefit of the large swap area I have created..is this because of how the operating system uses swap? Is there a live distro that will save files and settings to swap before using up ram, by default? If not, is there a way to change the behavior of Ubuntu Live CD?
Is there a reason why we cant make proper paragraphs? Is this site strapped for bandwidth or something? Is the site just acting funny?
Software :: Install Plop To The Hard Disk On A Windows 2000
Jun 28, 2011I was going to try to install plop on a windows 2000 so that I could dual boot win and linux. I ran [URL] to install. In the command window it said that the program can't be run under a Dos box and only to continue in I was not running in windows. If I tell it to continue, windows gives me an error message that says it is trying to write directly to the hard disk. It asks me to abort or ignore. If I ignore, the program seems to run. Is this not the right way to install plop to the hard disk?

General :: How To Get Live CD To Start After Booting From Floppy Disk
Nov 18, 2010I'm an experienced Linux developer who has run into a little problem. I'm using a National Instruments 8170 chassis, among the normal ports, it has a FDD and USB port but this model does not allow booting from a USB CDROM ( I tried a BIOS update, that didn't help either ). I made this cool customized 550MB FC8 LiveCD wtih X, GCC, various apps, etc. and a kernel 2.6.30 & 2.6.18 boot floppy disk with all the needed drivers. The floppy boots to a shell with all the busybox utils, etc. and detects the USB CDROM media and all its files.
My Question is: How do I get the kernel and initrd on the Live CD to start or boot after booting from the Floppy disk ?, I mean, I want to load linux again but this time from the CD after booting linux from floppy, if that makes sense. I'm just using the floppy to boot and recognize the USB CDROM. This can be done with MSDOS and loadlin but loadlin has an issue(it hangs) with the newer kernels (2.6.18 and greater). I searched for the loadlin source code to port it to linux but was unable to find it on the net.
General :: Boot Debian Install Disk From Floppy?
May 4, 2010I scored a Dell poweredge 6300 from a local pawn shop. It has the capability to boot from cd-rom, but apparently not with isolinux, which is what the debian installer cd uses. I was able to boot to UBCD411 (Ultimate Boot CD, which uses syslinux), but didn't see any option to boot to a CD (maybe I'm missing something here?). I tried using the boot floppy from this site. I didn't expect it to work (it's from the Woody era), and it did not. I got a message that says SYSLINUX ver.XXXX CBIOS boot failed. I went to [URL].. and looked for a boot floppy image for Lenny, but apparently it doesn't exist. I did however find the boot floppy image for Etch.
To be honest, even if I did find the Lenny floppy boot image, I'm not sure how to use it to point the system to the installer CD. So, I have two questions:
1) Does anyone know of a boot floppy image for Lenny, or if I could use the Etch boot floppy image?
2) How would one boot from floppy, then point the system to the installer CD?
System info:
(4) Xeon Pentium 2 processors 500 Mhz
(6) UltraSCSI hard drives
(1) SCSI cd-rom drive
(1) SCSI dvd-rom drive
(1) Floppy drive
(1) 10/100 NIC
I'm open to any other suggestions as to how I could install Debian Lenny on this machine.

Ok, so I mounted it, then attempted the copy. The copy failed almost immediately with an error message. I rebooted into ubuntu, did the same thing, and it worked.

Mar 24, 2009I'm looking for a way to make a bootable floppy that has drdflash.img, my flash utility and my bios file on it for a bios recovery disk. This is on a board that has a failed bios, so everything is pretty much dead (except for the humble floppy drive). I don't have a screen to work with so this floppy needs to be able to run the utility and automatically flash the chip for me. I've heard this is possible, but am unable to find clear instructions on how to do any of this. I know the basics of it is to copy the bios file and flash utility to a floppy along with a bootdisk that will run these things (sometimes the .bat file needs to be modified in order to do this automatically). So I've downloaded drdflash but it came as a .img and I don't think it can be 'just' copied to disk. I came across the 'dd' command but have also heard its nicknamed 'data destroyer' or words to that effect.

May 10, 2010Anyone here knows the OpenSuse install CD runthrough? I am using DELL pc's, and remember installing Linux as being a few almost basic steps on my self assembled clone pc's in my youth. Now, over ten years later I want to redo that and return to my old playground. I am using after over 12 years administering MS stuff again applications running on unix (solaris) at my work. Its like homecoming but in a difficult way, I am brainwashed and not really into unix anymore. So... lets install linux again at home. Returning to my favorite Suse distribution in the old days (who knows why).
I went through the installation (Opensuse11) simple, standard to start with, so mainly next (ACPI disabled). Rebooted... and the pc finds no recognized bootable HDD. OK, well, try again, other HDD to be sure, results in the same. Set manually the root partition as active. No go, I feel as a newbie again. What happened to me in those last years? Tried to do it also with a fedora distri - same outcome. When plugging these HDD in another recent (DELL) pc, it also does not recognize the HDD as bootable. Both disks have been part of a system before and functioned; until I changed this system for this other purpose. Probably i am missing something basic??
