My ubuntu login window seems to be chrased and seems no way to restore it. I was planning to move ahead with reinstalling it but could any1 tell me how can i copy data to external hard disk. I am in Mannual restore section with promt staying at root@ubuntu :/#
View 9 RepliesTuesday night I wanted to make a backup of my Ubuntu ext4 partition via Clonezilla so I configured that an image had to be made and it would be saved on the NTFS external disk. But it said it needed 23 hours to create a 5gb backup, so I resetted my computer as this took too long. But after this, Ubuntu nor Windows recognized my drive.
I called Seagate and they told me after troubleshooting 30 minutes, that there is no option of fixing the drive and I had to send it to RMA. What could be wrong? Clonezilla works via a bootable ISO on Debian. The disk drive is still spinning. I already rebooted the external drive, but it's not working. In Linux the disk is no longer mounted and cannot be mounted:

What could have happened? Would the data still be accessible on the internal drive? Did I just loose 1.5TB data that was stored on the external disk?
I got myself a dell laptop from the local computer store. Its a used machine with Windows Vista Home Basic on it. I want to load Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 though so I can do perl development. BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

I've been working at this for the past 2 days now. My computer got some kind of virus or something that has caused it to loop at startup and continually reset. I run an XP OS on a Gateway. I desperately need to backup my files, because the person who had my backup absently deleted my stuff. I was able to boot up using an Ubuntu disc and I'm in it right now, I've found my files, I have an external hard drive. The problem:First, it wont let me paste into the hard drive. If I drag, it says "Error while copying to "/media/FreeAgent Drive". You do not have permissions to write to this folder." I've mounted the external drive, nothing changes.
I've gone in to properties, is says under permissions that the owner is root, folder access is "Access files" and at the bottom is says "You are not the owner, so you can't change these permissions." The drop downs where I need to change permissions is in gray, so I can;t change it.So next, I tried "gksu nautilus", went to the drive through there, and it let me use the drop down selection under permissions. I tried to change the folder access and I got this message: "The permissions could not be changed. Couldn't change the permissions of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk." So I tried changing the file access to Read and Write. It didn't give an error, so I thought perhaps it finally worked. I hit apply, and tried to put my files in. Once again I got the message from before that said I didn't have permission. I tried to change the owner so it was no longer root and I got "The owner could not be changed. Couldn't change the owner of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk."I'm getting so frustrated right now. These files are VERY important to me! The hard drive I have is a Seagate FreeAgent desk 500GB
but I have literally just starting using Linux (Centos) in the last week or so. I am using a standalone PC that is not networked, and as I will be downloading and generating a lot of data on this machine, I would like to regularly backup onto an external hard driveIdeally I would likethis to happen automatically as there will be other people using the machine.There seem to be many different ways of doing this, and I am getting a bit confused about the best method to use.

When I called dell support, I have been told that my hard disk is dead. I have few important stuffs in my hard disk for which I don't have any back. So I tried using ubuntu live CD to back up my data as in the link below.[URL]..I'm using ubuntu 10.04 live CD(64 bit). When I go to my places after booting from the live CD I can't see any partition showing my hard disk. I can see "Computer". When I go in it I can only see "File System" and nothing related to my partitions in my HDD. What should I do now? Do I need to mount my hard disk or is my HDD completely dead?
View 4 Replies View RelatedBecause a lot of users are using laptops now, and many want externals hard drives for backups, is there a program in Ubuntu (cross-platform with Windows would be nice) that backs up files to an external hard drive when the external drive is plugged in or on a timely basis? All backup systems seem to have a timed system, but these systems have annoying pop ups if your backup location is non-existant (e.g. Deja Dup).
Use case 1: I plug in my external, the program recognizes that and starts a backup.
Use case 2: I leave my external in all day and every 6 hours, my laptop backs up my files to it.
I have installed luckybackup software on my ubuntu 10.10 notebook edition. But I don't know how to use it to backup files to an external hard drive. The Hard Drive is a 1 TB Seagate. I don't think that the Destination Drop down menu in luckybackup even shows the External HD.

My primary drive is 250GB and has the root, home and var (I'd read it's good to put var on a separate partition for MythTV which I'm planning on doing) on separate partitions. I have a second 1TB drive that I'll be using to backup the 250GB drive and also host less critical data. I've created two partitions on this drive, one 250GB and the other covering the rest of the drive. I'd like to move the Videos directory out of Home on the 250GB onto the 1TB drive but can't find a definitive way of doing this. Should I just follow this guide for moving the home folder to a new partition? Next question is when performing a backup of the 250GB drive how do I make sure it's going to the 250GB partition on the 1TB drive? Can the different partitions be mounted separately?

After I installed Ubuntu 11.04 the disk had been wiped and a version of Ubuntu installed on it.I had forgotten to disconnect the external disk's usb cable before running the install in case something like this happened.I then just took whatever the installer said regarding partitions: I trusted it;and the installer's manual partition manager is a little too technical to be user-friendly. Mostly, I just trusted the automated partition manager to be making the right decisions for me.
The installer's auto-partition manager said it was erasing two partitions. I thought, oh that must include some sort of swap drive then.The auto-partition manager said it was using 500Gb of space. I thought, well there's more HD space on my desktop than I thought.I recently acquired the machine. It was a hand-down.The installer said do you want to install Ubuntu with, over or beside whatever existing versions there are. I said, over. I wanted a clean install since my attempt at making Ubuntu do an upgrade install had already failed. This was clearly stupid of me. But it was not as stupid as issuing an O/S installer that did what this one did.
The installer completely wiped my external usb backup drive. Not only that, but it installed another instance of Ubuntu on it. The install routine actually installed two instances of Ubuntu 11.04: one on my local HD and one on my now erased external HD.Just to rub salt in the wound, the update manager only updates the version that's running: the version on my internal HD. The version the installer copied over my backup data is redundant.I have fortunately a second backup of most essential data. But the external HD contained data that was not copied elsewhere. It has been permanently erased. It will probably possible to retrieve this data from original sources at a considerable inconvenience. I do not know at this time whether and how much of the data that was erased is now lost forever and what the consequences of the loss would mean.
whether all 2TB external hard disks will run on ubuntu 10.04 (lucid)? I was under the impression that Seagate and Western Digital would, but the store where I went to buy it told me they won't. I really need to buy an external hard disk as I'm running out of the space

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just updated to karmic, and I found that my external hard disk partitions, previously mounted under /media/disk and /media/fat are now referenced by something looking like a UUID, namely /media/7b096ea4-60ee-46b1-95cd-1851b051c40d and /media/4951-95D9.
Is there a way to revert to the old settings? Any application relying on the files on the external hard disk has now stopped working. While I certainly could just change reference (assuming the UUID does not change every session), I'd rather use the old names if possible.
I've 2 computers (one at the job, one at home), different motherboard types but same chipset, having AM2 AMD CPUs but different clock speed. I don't have (I don't want to buy) internal hard disks for these computers.
I would like to buy one external USB HDD and install the latest Ubuntu. I will carry this HDD to my job and my home. Is it possible to use this HDD as boot HDD on both computer? Even they are not same just similar? Is this a problem for Ubuntu?

View 2 Replies View Relatedmy old pc died not long ago so I retrieved its hard disk and bought a USB enclosure. that HD had a ubuntu 9.04 partition and an XP one. Something must have gone wrong somewhere as, although i could still boot from jaunty, I was not allowed to upgrade.
It therefore seemed to me natural perform a clean install, so here's what I did:
- on a win7 computer, I inserted a 9.10 bootable disk
- with usb-disk creator, I wanted to install via a spare image so re-formatted the HD
- I couldn't install a mythbuntu 9.10 after that as I giot an error message ("can't mount the drive" or something similar). yet, in win7 the HD is recognised.
So, what am I doing wrong? Are USB HDs not included as USB devices that you can make bootable? Or should I be installing a !straight" ubuntu version, then install MythTV?
Firstly I've never (successfully) upgraded before using update manager -d but I've only tried once. I'm on 10.10 at the moment but I want to make a full disk backup using Acronis and try out 11.04 beta 1 so if I can't boot (like with the 11.04 Alpha 3) I'm ok.
What I want to know is if I upgrade to beta 1 it will install new things and settings, if beta 2 is released and I upgrade to that (after having beta 1 installed) will it overwrite all the settings again? Or will I be able to spend time set beta 1 up nice how I want it (if it works) and just smoothly upgrade gradually to final 11.04 keeping it pretty much exactly how I want it?
Also with the software sources, I understand I need to disable the ones I manually added before updating from 10.10 then to re-enable them, but how do I re-enable them for Natty as they are currently for Maverick? Do I just change the word Maverick to Natty, or is it better to remove and re-add them for natty? And do the authentication keys need updating or are they ok? I don't really know a lot about the keys.
1 more thing (sorry) will an upgrade overwrite any settings I have e.g. etc/fstab, sudoers, things like that? I know when you upgrade it gives you an option for some things e.g. keep or replace, if I keep old settings from maverick does it matter? Or does 11.04 add new lines/things to these files if I choose replace?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm pretty new been using ubuntu as my only OS for couple months now and most of my time has been spent tweaking settings and I don't want to lose them, or do a clean install when 11.04 final is released as I won't ever be able to remember them all.
I copied my backup disk (3.2 GB) onto my hard drive using 10.4 in order to reorganize my storage, but then I could not trash it.In "file browser" a lock icon appears next to the folder name, and I always get the error message that it can not be put into trash in one step, would I like to delete it? I do not want to buy an external hard disk and then keep moving it between both. Now, strange as it may sound, is it possible to somehow connect my server to the PC and expose a given local hard disk connected to the server, as an external USB drive to the TV?
