I have a Fedora 11 Installed in my machine with customized packages and scripts. Now I want to create an ISO/Image of that installed FC11, so it can be used to install in multiple machines.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using a dell XPS M1530 laptop with windows vista and ubuntu 10.04. Last week when I turned on my laptop I got an error saying internal hard disk not found. When I called dell support, I have been told that my hard disk is dead. I have few important stuffs in my hard disk for which I don't have any back. So I tried using ubuntu live CD to back up my data as in the link below.[URL]..I'm using ubuntu 10.04 live CD(64 bit). When I go to my places after booting from the live CD I can't see any partition showing my hard disk. I can see "Computer". When I go in it I can only see "File System" and nothing related to my partitions in my HDD. What should I do now? Do I need to mount my hard disk or is my HDD completely dead?

Now, being a linux noob I need help on two questions :
1). Why only 'sda1' is shown when using df -h to get disk space usage, and what else needs to be done to check stats for 'sdb' ?
2). My PHP script needs to save a lot of 'cache' files, how to make the script use the second disk for saving the files - I mean what path should I edit in my script (current is '/var/www/html/tmp')
I want to make the transition from windows (sick of it). Im using Lenovo G530 Laptop and was wondering which would be the best Linux Os (meaning Ubuntu, fedora or something else). Keep in mind that I mostly use my laptop for college work and a lot of video and audio editing. I also want to be able to run Dual operating system (meaning that I wanna run both Linux and Windows) from the same computer as it might be easier for me to make the transition a little bit more easier. That being said I need someone to give me tutorials (video preferred) on how to make the partitions on the hard disk and step by step instruction on how to install both the two OS in my laptop.

I have a hospital application written using a database called MSE. Now the provider of this application says they will only support tape because of the fact that this system is using a specialized backup system. Basically the data is housed on raw_data blocks. So what I am looking to do is create a way to USE the SAN to present the server with Hard Drives and be mounted as if it was a tape. Has anyone tried to do something like this before? If so how did you configure that. One solution that I thought would be to just Present a 2TB lun and carve up several partitions cut not create filesystems on them. Then just create a symlink everynight /dev/rmt0 and rotate out the partitions.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIts basically an old SATA Hard Drive with a Windows XP partition I was trying to sell.When my computer does the BIOS checks, it doesn't pass the SMART test (but I can boot it anyway), although I can't boot Linux in any way with this Hard Disk connected (I even tried Live CD distros, like Parted Magic).I can boot the XP partition from inside the disk, although I guess its pretty close to not being able to. Is there any way to "fix" this Hard Drive?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've set up my parents' machine running KDE 4.5 and want them to use the Gwenview import function from the Device Manager popup when transferring image files off photo CDs or other inserted media, since it's the easiest method for them to comprehend. All the files on their photo discs are r-xr-xr-x by default so they're unable to rotate or modify the images once copied to their hard disk. I want to set one specific images folder on their system to automatically force any files placed there to be rw-r--r-- (and rw-rw-r-- for another shared images directory elsewhere). It seems that umask won't work since that can only take permissions away and not add them, and I'd rather avoid getting into messy ACL configuration. Is there a way to achieve this either generically or some hidden config in Gwenview itself? I use KRename myself for such tasks but this is way too complex for my parents to understand so I need something that works without them having to do anything.

I want to load Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 though so I can do perl development. BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.

It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
Can you install a live cd onto hard drive? I'm in a live environment now and don't see an install option.

When I login as kurt, I do not have access to my home directory on the hard drive. I tried [root@localhost home] #chmod kurt kurt (after cd-ing to the correct spot), but still cannot access my files there. I can do so as Live System User, but not as me.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently tried installing Fedora 14 on a HP z600 workstation, but I'm running into major stability issues.
I can successfully boot fedora 14 from the live-cd and can perform basic tasks from the terminal and within gnome. However, I sometimes experience hard-crashes when I am browsing the web with firefox. In fact, I can pretty consistently cause this by downloading a relatively large file (~100MB) with firefox. Interestingly though, I don't experience any problems when doing the same with curl.
Furthermore, I run into the same issues when I install fedora 14. Worse, the system seems corrupted when it recovers after rebooting... sometimes failing to make it to the login screen.
I'm suspicious of the network driver, but also of the memory. I have performed the memory test included on the live-cd, but it reports no issues. This may be so, but from previous experience with computers, I don't trust memory tests to detect all memory issues.
Ubuntu is similarly problematic; vista appears fine, with limited testing.
*Hard-crash: system locks up for 5 or so seconds, followed by a black screen, and then reboots. There are no error messages displayed.
EDIT: As a point of reference, Fedora 11 seems to be a stable for me.
I have just finished building a new computer and it booted with no problems from the hard drive to ubuntu 10.10 (it was a hard drive from a previous computer and had ubuntu installed). After less than a minute though it froze up completely. I restarted and now cannot get ubuntu to boot. I get to GRUB with no problems but when I try to boot ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner and it hangs indefinitely.
I tried to boot from a live cd to see if there was anything I could do but I get as far as the screen to choose "Try Ubuntu" or "Install" and both choices leave me on a black screen with the mouse icon. I can move the mouse but nothing else. I have tried the Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit, 11.04 64-bit, 11.04 32-bit and even Mythbuntu, which I had on a cd from a magazine. I get the same result with all of these.
On the other hand, OpenSUSE 11.4 boots from the Live CD fine and I installed it and it boots from the hard drive. This is good news but I would much prefer Ubuntu, as I'm more used to it. Am I doing something wrong or have I any hope?

I'm install it onto my laptop (its about 4 years old - a Sony Vaio VGN FS315E).
I have been given a live disk of the latest edition of ubuntu (10.4?) by someone at work, but my CD drive on my laptop seems to think the disk is blank. I know this is not the case as when the disk is inserted into a different laptop is it recognised as an ubuntu installation disk.
My aim to boot ubuntu from the disk to get a feel for what it's like before installing it fully on my laptop, and also to check that it would work on said laptop.
