I am new to Linux (I get to learn it for work ) I was wondering how to launch multiple applications on different work spaces via a script. I have researched it and come up with most people using "Devil's Pie" I don't have this as an option. (work reasons) I was wondering what commands I could use in the script file to launch an app. on Said monitor on Said workstation.

I'm starting to have A LOT of opened windows in my machine. Sometimes within a project, I have e-mail/task management/personal e-mail/twitter, and a lot of different opened applications/terminals in my Linux workstation.Sometimes it would be interesting to have different workspaces to projects instead of this configuration I have nowadays that are classes of work (bad name, I know, but I think you got the idea).I'm starting to think about using two monitors: one with Corporate Management, Work and Personal. The second monitor is only the development state: each workspace here is about a project being worked on instead of groups of works like before. A workspace may be implementing different classes for example.
My question is: I just want to change to a second monitor using the mouse. I want to still be able to change workspaces in the same monitor using keyboard shortcuts. The keyboard shortcuts wouldn't change monitors, just worskpaces on the same monitor. All the tutorials I read (like this one) only tells how to use multiple monitors but doesn't answer my question about keyboard shortcuts.Does Linux (Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx or Debian 5.0.5 Lenny) support this envisioned setup (Different workspaces in a way that keyboard workspace switching only works in the current monitor) ? If so, how?I haven't tested this setup, that's why I'm asking. In this question the user says it works exactly how I want it to behave, can someone else confirm it?
I have used various distro's but so far the interaction was always with standalone workstation, max few machines/servers.I was thinking of a scenario, where say - Linux has to be installed on 20 servers with similar packages and configuration, what would be the best solution to tackle such scenario....
View 4 Replies View RelatedI first tried latest version 10.10 desktop. very slow booting in a Centrino CPU laptop not booting at all in a N455 CPU netbook. Tried version 10.04 which seems to work better fast booting in Centrino CPU laptop. fast booting in N455 CPU netbook. From Centrino Laptop with Windows XP on HD, once loaded Ubuntu as persistent live program from a USB drive, tried to install the program on SD memory card in PC slot. Upon request, installation made onto that memory only, not on inside HD, hence formatting only that memory. Upon completion, after removing the external memories and booting again the PC it does not boot of its own any more. XP OS damaged. I have recovered the system with a Toshiba backup CD but the HD has been formatted and all data lost. How can this happen ? I'll never try anymore to permanently install Ubuntu. I'll use it as persistent live on an external memory. I only have an old PC laptop with 128 MB RAM for further installation testing but no Ubuntu release can boot there. By the way, Lubuntu 10.10 look more fast and safe although appears to have more limitations then Ubuntu 10.10.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIn my previous versions of ubuntu(8.04, 9.10), I have been able to open applications and folders on one desktop and then drag and drop them onto any other desktop. I upgraded to 10.04 recently on two different computers and this functionality seems to be gone. I can drag around but the cursor stops when it hits the edge of the desktop instead of popping over to the next desktop. The only visible option is to right click and choose move to right or down workspace. This is okay but it can take several steps to move them diagonally if needed.

Unfortunately, these applications seem to intercept my default and all other hotkeys I have tried for switching desktops ... I know there is a solution for VirtualBox via the host key, but I am looking for something more "generic".
Is there, for example, any way to catch key strokes in Gnome/Compiz before the full screen app receives them?

For some reason, if I copy and paste this into a terminal, it creates 7 detached screen sessions as I expect. If I run it from within a script, however, I get only the first session, "somename," when I run screen -ls.
Edit: If the same can be accomplished another way (e.g. with multiple screen windows instead of sessions), I would be open those solutions as well.
I am hoping I have a simple one to solve here! I've been looking around online, trying to find out how to configure multiple desktops to have their own taskbar.Most of my results suggest that I should be able to click on the menu, choose favorites, and go to Configure Desktop. In the new window, I should see a taskbar section on the left hand side?I am running OpenSUSE 11.2 on two machines and neither of them have this option. I just wanted to see if somebody knows where I can find the window to configure separate taskbars for each desktop?

When I hook up my tv to my laptop via an HDMI cable, I am having an issue in the multiple desktop configuration. The audio and video work great in both the cloned desktop mode, and the multiple desktop mode (the extended displays cuts my laptop image in half though). However, when I am using multi-desktop, if I mouse over (or drag a window) from display one to display two, I can not bring my mouse back into the first display (it doesn't matter which display is which, tv or laptop)

View 6 Replies View RelatedI now have 2 desktops running debian. I have virtual servers running in desktop 1, and I am hosting my photos using Gallery2. I have copied Gallery2 and the mysql over to desktop 2. I have entered port forward to desktop 1 using port 80 (using my router), and desktop 2 using port 1000. I can only access Gallery2 in desktop1. If I tried to access Gallery2 in desktop 2, I got re-directed to desktop1.
Questions:
1. Are home routers capable of port forward to more than one computers in a home network behind the firewall of the router? It is Belkin N+ router.
2. Can multiple virtual servers be setup in 2 desktops?
According to Distrowatch, the two most downloaded distributions are Mint and Ubuntu. I have put both on my computer. In Mint I can find no way to put multiple virtual desktops in my panel. In Ubuntu 10.10, when I go to synaptic package manager the settings tab with the repositories is dimmed out. I have enabled the sources list in administration but it is a less convenient way to add repositories. Despite what the linux community seems to think, I find that Simply Mepis and Pclinuxos are better for actual use.

Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

Yesterday when I attempted to launch firefox I received a bus error and the application did not launch. I corrected the problem by removing and reinstalling firefox. Today the same problem is happening with emacs. I have not tried removing and reinstalling emacs so I am not sure if that will work but since the problem has occurred in more than one application now, I assume it points to a larger issue. I have done some research on bus errors but it isn't clear why this problem would manifest in different applications in this manner. View 3 Replies View RelatedAs the subject of this post suggests i'm trying to launch Ubuntu applications from a php script, i have tried different ways of doing this but without much success.Firstly i would like to explain why and maybe somebody may have a better suggestion or an alternative route...I am making a 'personal' remix of Ubuntu which will be a live CD i can use for my university work (studying computer forensics), it will basically be a minimal install with every Linux based forensics application i can lay my hands on,instead of having a huge list of shortcut's in the menu's that ship with Ubuntu I though it would be fun/a challenge to make a fancy PHP based web site which contained a database of the programs so i could search through them and find what i need by category ect and then launch those applications from the same site.I can 'talk' to Ubuntu through some small scripts i've tried but i can't launch any applications.Here is what i've got so far....

I recently installed stacks for Docky using the script of this link here [URL]
Until that, everything is okay. I can drag and drop folders to Docky, and when I click 'em I can easily see it's content like in Mac OS or Cairo.
But the problem here is that I wanted to make an Application folder like in Mac OS X. I made a folder that I called aplications and there I put all the applications I have installed.
But, when I try to open an app from the Docky, it just opens gedit with info about the app I'm trying to open. Is it related that all the application's names are .desktop files? Is that an executable?

I tried to launch java files (.jar) by choosing a program Openjdk Java 6 runtime. Then it gives me an error that the file is not marked as executable. I know how to solve problem with wine by making a launcher with a command and path

Today (25 of March) Fedora 10 asked to install latest security updates. I allowed it to install them and everything seemed ok. But after the next boot I understood that some applications won't launch. Skype, last.fm player, VirtualBox - all the qt ones. I've reinstalled those apps, and reinstalled qt. They still don't launch.When I execute one of them from terminal - it just waits and nothing happens.The process really starts, I can see it from ps -A and gnome's System Monitor.Here's the /var/log/yum.log for March 25th:

I recently acquired an android device and would like to be able to ssh into my machine and launch certain X applications ( Amarok, other video players)
This works well when I launch server tasks that don't require an interface, however when trying to launch Amarok on the host from a remote session, I get an error about DBUS and display obviously. Just to clarify, I do not want them to launch on the phone itself but on the host, If I start them manually while at the host II can then control them remotely fine once they are started. . .
