General :: XDMCP Slow - Looking For Alternative Remote Desktops

I've been used to using RDP on Windows to remote to machines, and I've got an asus eee 701 which I want to use to do some *nix programming on. While the eee is a lovely little machine the screen and keyboard are a little small to use for lots of programming. I've tried using Xming (the free version) to remote login into the eee from my desktop using XDMCP (or even using a ssh session as a straight X11 server and no desktop on the eee) the whole thing seems seriously slow over wifi the initial desktop takes at least 5 seconds to paint (might even be 10 seconds I haven't actually timed it). So my real question is what do other folks use for remote control with a GUI for their *nix boxes? I am finding it hard to believe the performance is so bad over a wifi network (It makes the Mac IIs I used to use a college in 1988 seem fast) or is this just a problem with Xming and using say the Cygwin X11 server would be better.
on Debian/Ubuntu in the login form (i suppose it's "gdm") from the bottom right corner I can pick the option to login to a remote XDMPC desktop (that of course I enabled on the other side..) the network is checked for those open XDMCP service and finally, the login box appears and i can remotely login to a "graphic terminal".
How can I do the same in Fedora? I found some guide about Xnest, Xzephyr, but I was totally unable to find a way for doing this simple task.
I'm trying to get an laptop running more or less like a headless server, my reasons are not all that serious. Mostly I want to leave the laptop running as a seed box when my main PC is turned off, also want to setup it up as a media top, common place for media files and playback on Tv. So essentially I want to be able to access the remote machine, preferably sharing the same session and persisting while I log out from remote.
What I've done: setup keys for ssh to connect automatically between machines, so I can login via terminal, access the file system without issues, which is already a great step. enabled remote access on remote machine lightdm manager setup deluge for daemon torrenting, which enables almost seamlessly client to connect remotely (though deluge is not the best with speed)
What I've tried so far: Connect directly with a new X session Code: Select allX -query your_server_ip :1
Works alright, creates a new display (:1) which is oddly in F2 tty instead F8 as is expected. Works alright, not much lag, audio is not routed.
But an issue! whenever I decide to log out X will simply shutdown, screen goes black and I can't resume on my regular session on my local machine.Connect X with nested Xephyr session
This works too and might be the best solution yet, a windows is created and the remote session is nested in your current X session. Visual and performance is ok. Only real issue is that session is not shared, eg, application will not remain running...Connect via VNC
So it seems only solution for shared sessions is VNC.
With the remote desktop apps from KDE (which is the DE for both), I can connect buzz around and etc, but its kinda cumbersome and laggy, password always resets and I usually need to accept on the remote machine.
I've tried setting up lightdm to allow a vncserver at logon, but this is erratic at best, took a long time to get the Xvnc command correct enough for me to login remotely, and even then got a garbled screen and the X session wasn't even the same...
So that's it... Isn't there a way of regular X session sharing in the remote computer? Or a better solution for lightdm vnc invoke?
I need to setup a xdmcp server on ubuntu 10.10 to allow for remote connections. Obviously this cant be done from the login window as with previous versions of Ubuntu.
I am going through cygwin's XWin.exe (XWin - queary <hostname>) to start a remote session with a RHEL 5.5 workstation. I have run gdmsetup on the worksation to allow the remote connection. Starting the remote session goes off without a problem. After about two hours, it just exits and I have to start over. This is a problem since all my gui's are killed and I have some important processes running.

There must be a 2 hour timeout set somewhere - maybe in a gconf xml file?
I use XDMCP from an old laptop to login remotely to another computer which is running Debian 6. This seemed to work fine in Debian Lenny, and the laptop screen would switch off after a period of inactivity as I expected. Now the laptop screen blanks after inactivity, but the backlight never switches off.
I have problem with remote Windows desktop.If I connect from my Ubuntu 10.04 to remote Windows XP SP2 desktop, I can type only digits, but no letters.If I connect from Windows XP, installed as guest in VirtualBox - everything is ok, I can type without problems.
I have my desktop at home installed with Ubuntu 11.04. I set up remote desktop through the native remote desktop server program. I can connect to the server from my remote Ubuntu 10.10 laptop, and it works*. The problem is, it is painfully slow -> lags at least 5 seconds for every input.
I got an old PC I am using as a game server (Counter Strike and Left 4 Dead), it's a dual core Athlon 5000+ with 2GB Ram, the motherboard is kinda old and has a SiS Chipset with terrible graphics causing the video to flicker at somewhat high resolutions (anything above 1280x1024 will cause problems).I decided to add a Geforce 8400GS just so I don't have to deal with that terrible onboard VGA, upon installing the card I noticed the VNC is unusable, awfully slow over a 1gbps lan. I have installed the kmod drivers and it hasn't changed anything
My server is connected to the Internet for ssh on port 22 with root logon disabled, a single non-dictionary word user name allowed, and pki authentication only (about as secure as I can make it). I've previously run fc5 and 9 servers using the same sshd config since 2006 and had no security troubles, so I'm happy, but.. After the fc13 install and configuration, logins from a host on a remote network are taking about 1m 30s to complete! A (partial) console output for ssh -vv appears below. The lines marked with "**" were the lines after which significant pauses happen. This is fully repeatable.

FTP from and from my home computers to 2 remote servers has become really slow over the past month. One of the remote servers I manage and the other one is taken care of by a hosting company, so I am thinking the problem is residing on my end. It doesn't matter if I am downloading 1 file or 10 files, they are all coming in at 9 kb/s which is really slow cause I have a 7 megabit connection. I've tried using multiple computers and still have the same problem. I am using proftp for the ftp server and filezilla for the client.
I have one headless squeeze and two notebooks (one squeeze, one lenny).
When I have X (on headless squeeze) on lenny notebook, it is unacceptably slow. Something like it takes 3-10 seconds to redraw window (acroread, iceweasel, possibly xterm.)
It is not so slow when I use squeeze notebook. Yesterday, I upgraded lenny one to squeeze. Then, it is not slow any more!
I took the simple approach and installed the gnome desktop, but I have read about KDE and Xfce and am curious. There may be a lot more that I just haven't heard about yet too. So the question is: Without doing a reinstall and messing up the downloads and settings I have now, how do I try a new desktop like Xfce or Kde? Also, what are the basic differences between the desktops?
So, I am having difficulty understanding what I need to do or if this can be done at all..
I would like to boot into the command line for my Linux system but, still have access to the different environments as well (KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment, etc) but I don't know how to do that using startx. that seems to only start KDE.
Can you use startx in some way to optionally start another environment? If not, can it be set up to start that graphical umm.. like start chooser screen? I don't know all the terms but its the screen that comes up that you enter your username/password and you can select which environment you like.
Using Fedora 14, compiz.How do I set each of the Desktop screens, available from the viewport switcher.... with a different wallpaper? Searching keeps turning up multiple monitors and such -- but not multiple viewports/desktops. I know i did it before.
When I try to set my number of desktops to "4" on the KDE control module, it reverts back to having only two. I downloaded and installed the current ATI driver (ati-driver-installer-10-11-x86.x86_64.run) and everything works as it should with compiz, except for desktop cube, because I only have two desktops. I never had a problem while running Ubuntu, just with backtrack 4 r2. By the way, I have it installed and not running on a virtual box.
In Ubuntu 10.04 running Gnome I can right click on any window and it gives me an option to show that window on all desktops, so even if I switch to a different virtual desktop, that window will always show.Is there a command in terminal that can do this?
I have a laptop running two versions of openSUSE, 11.2 & 11.3M5. I'm using a shared /home partition for both.I would like to have different desktop settings for each version but haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Primarily different wallpaper or background color.I know I could use different users on each version, but then I wouldn't have access to all the sub-folders from the other user.

Or is the problem BCD is on linux partition 1?
I have used various distro's but so far the interaction was always with standalone workstation, max few machines/servers.I was thinking of a scenario, where say - Linux has to be installed on 20 servers with similar packages and configuration, what would be the best solution to tackle such scenario....
I am new to Linux (I get to learn it for work ) I was wondering how to launch multiple applications on different work spaces via a script. I have researched it and come up with most people using "Devil's Pie" I don't have this as an option. (work reasons) I was wondering what commands I could use in the script file to launch an app. on Said monitor on Said workstation.
I first tried latest version 10.10 desktop. very slow booting in a Centrino CPU laptop not booting at all in a N455 CPU netbook. Tried version 10.04 which seems to work better fast booting in Centrino CPU laptop. fast booting in N455 CPU netbook. From Centrino Laptop with Windows XP on HD, once loaded Ubuntu as persistent live program from a USB drive, tried to install the program on SD memory card in PC slot. Upon request, installation made onto that memory only, not on inside HD, hence formatting only that memory. Upon completion, after removing the external memories and booting again the PC it does not boot of its own any more. XP OS damaged. I have recovered the system with a Toshiba backup CD but the HD has been formatted and all data lost. How can this happen ? I'll never try anymore to permanently install Ubuntu. I'll use it as persistent live on an external memory. I only have an old PC laptop with 128 MB RAM for further installation testing but no Ubuntu release can boot there. By the way, Lubuntu 10.10 look more fast and safe although appears to have more limitations then Ubuntu 10.10.
I want to run a system that acts as a basic file server, I want to remove the graphics card for the sake of power saving and less heat in the box. My machine can boot without the GPU, and I can ping it and use putty to do things, but I'm still new to Linux and don't really know what I'm doing so GUI is best for me atm.
From somewhere I picked up that this is possible (the XDMCP server machine can have no GPU). This post here [URL].. seems to be what I am looking for, but I don't know how to "convert" these instructions to Ubuntu (the files mentioned do not exist on my install anyway).
I'm on a private network and would like to have XDMCP turned on so different users can access the system with a greeter and log in to their own desktop.To test if this works, I've tried 'Xnest :1 -query localhost' - which on other _nix systems will bring up the greeter, then I know that all I have to do is deal with firewall issues, etc. On Ubuntu 11.04 I just get a blank screen.I've seen others asking for help with XDMCP, and the answers are to use VNC, which from my experience allows you to _share_ the current desktop, not create a new one for a different user to use at the same time. If I am mistaken please let me know.So, any ideas on how to get XDMCP up and running on Ubuntu 11.04?
I have good experience in microsoft enviroment, now tiring to use linux, i tried Ubuntu 9.10, OpenSuse on different computers bur there is same big problem: Very slow download speed compared to microsoft.same file at same time downloaded by microsoft winxp toke incomparable short time. for example file 5.5MB attached to e-mail on Yahoo toke ~1minute to download on winxp computer,same file at same computer but with Ubuntu takes more thane 30minutes!
I heard that window managers like xdm, kdm and gdm etc use xdmcp protocol which is inherently unsafe. Now I have an Xclient that has to be displayed on multiple Xterminals. Can I do this without gdm/xdmcp. Shouldn't the regular X work in this case. What exaclty is the purpose of gdm/xdmcp on top of X. So if gdm provides the complete desktop manager, does this mean it is unsecure since it uses xdmcp?
