General :: Mounting VFAT As User In Fedora 14

I can't seem to mount my local VFAT partition with username ownership; it is consistently mounted as daemon. I've tried to CHOWN and CHGRP the mount point of /media/SHARED (its location), but that doesn't work. I should include the reason in case you have other suggestions that are alternative to changing ownership on the mounted VFAT drive:
In my old Fedora 9, I ran Eudora under Wine. The program lived on my VFAT partition. I could hence run Eudora under both Windows and Fedora, which was really nice - even though I hardly boot into Windows anymore. While I did notice the username and group name were the same as they are under Fedora 14 fstab mounting - daemon - it still worked without a hitch. To note, the partition was also automounted in Fedora 9 in fstab.I just upgraded to Fedora 14. When I automount the drive through fstab, Eudora will not launch. Yet when I manually mounted the drive (and I noticed that the username and group are my local username, not daemon), Eudora launches fine. So while my solution, mounting the drive manually when Fedora 14 starts, does in fact work, it is a bit of a pain. Luckily I don't reboot too often!
In any case, I wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions. Maybe it's just a mounting syntax issue; but as for mounting syntax in fstab, I used the same line as my F9 fstab.The line I used was: /dev/sda3 /media/SHARED vfat umask=0000,dmask=0000,uid=0002,gid=users,users 0 0

I have a vfat partition under RedHat RHEL5 that I currently must mount manualy after each boot. I would like it to auto-mount but I cannot find a way to do this without it becoming ro except for root. My other partitions auto-mount just fine. I have tried the vfat as a separate partition and as a VLM logical drive (as it currently is).
The fstab statement:
"/dev/VolGroup00/LogVolDos /dos vfat noauto,users 0 0"
allows me to mount it as a user. The statement:
"/dev/VolGroup00/LogVolDos /dos vfat defaults 1 2"
is what I use for other VLM partitions, but for the vfat it seems to only allow root access. Manually mount this partition is OK, it's just that I have sometimes forgotten and then it is not included in backups. What do I need to do to make the vfat auto-mount as accessible for a user?

I am having trouble getting my portable hard drive to mount after partitioning it for VFAT. I originally had it partitioned as NTFS but I realized that my Xbox 360 will only mount VFAT filesystems. I believe that I partitioned it correctly with yast. However I am still having trouble mounting it. Below is the output of fdisk, mount and dmesg.

How can i mount a dev (/dev/sdb1) of type vfat so i as a user can use it at boot. if i change /video to owner david i can use it at boot. But if fstab says mount /dev/sdb1 at /video it becomes owned by root and wont let root change owners. even if fstab says rw,user i still cant mount or unmount /dev/sdb1 at /video
how do i mount a drive that motion can use to store files on?

When i use the "Places" menu to try to access the other partitions on the same hard-drive i get a pop-up box asking me for the Root user password. Is there any way to mount it without? The normal user is now in the sudoers group but really i don't think i should be asked for authentication at all?

That's the drive I am wanting to mount with full permissions for anyone. Right now the folder only has root permissions. Is there a specific group ID I assign this in fstab so it's automatically mounted with full permissions for anyone who logs in?

by default fedora 13 mounts the drive under /media/uuid, with no read or write access to users other than root. I need to be able to turn the drive on, have it automount so that I can read and write to it without logging in as root every time and dealing with changing permissions on files, etc.
In other distributions, this has worked flawlessly, but I'm not familiar enough with Fedora 13 yet to get it working. I've read the man pages, tried to search, but I can't seem to find a working answer,If I could get this one little inconvenience fixed, I'd be set... loving Fedora so far.

After upgrading from Fedora 12 ot Fedora 13 I now get this message when mounting a FAT32 partition in /etc/fstab: mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat' Does not Fedora recognized FAT32 partitions anymore ? Am I missing a package which adds 'vfat' filesystem support ? This worked without problems in Fedora 12 and the upgrade to Fedora 13 from a Fedora 13 installation DVD ran without problems or errors.

I am running Fedora 14 with kernel 2.6.35.74 x86_64 and I am having an issue with a Vfat partition that is shared with Windows 7 on a dual boot setup. this partition contains my mozilla profiles and it occasionally mounts as read only in Fedora. I wont be able to write to it and root doesnt seem to be able to write to it when this happens. I checked this by trying to redirect an output of ifconfig. My fstab entry looks like this.

Does anyone know if there's a way to create an ext4 image on top of a vfat volume? I know how to create a disk image file and mount it on the loopback device, but a vfat volume allows a max file size of 4 GB so is there a way to make a spanning disk image?For example you'd have disk1.img through disk3.img where each one is 4 GB, but when mounted via loopback it would appear as one complete 12 GB ext4 volume. Is this possible?

When installing Fedora 10 or 11 Alpha, I get the following message when attempting to install the entire root filesystem (including /boot) to a vfat partition:"Error with Partitioning.The following critical errors exist with your requested partitioning scheme. Under both Windows and Fedora 11, my USB flash drive was mounted using the volume label of "RBR Astro". Under Fedora 12, it now gets mounted as "RBR ASTRO". I like my old case. It's a small nuisance, but it also ended up breaking all my links to files/directories that I store on flash. How can I get the flash to mount while preserving case?

I have performed NFS installation on debian(as server) and fedora(as client). I made tests for 2 directories. The first one(from a debian home/somedir directory worked perfectly) but the second one not. This second directory is a hard disk partionned on fat32(vfat in my /etc/fstab file).

I have a 320GB external HDD with 2 partitions, both primary:
1. vfat 100GB
2. ext3 remainder
Both were formatted when I created them with qtparted. Windows 7 sees them, and says they are healthy, but does not recognize the vfat partition. Is it too big, perhaps? Short of moving everything off the vfat partition and recreating it with W7, how do I fix it? I think W7 uses some sort of extended fat32 now?

I partitioned my drive to dual boot with XP, and I also added in a fat32 partition so both Windows and Linux can read/write to there to share files. I now have a problem with permissions (I know that fat32/vfat does not support permissions.) I can as my normal user read/write to this partition, but I want to set-up a CodeBlocks project on there and this is where I run into my permissions error.I can create it and the .cbp file is there ect. but I can not save any work, it will complain ('could not write', or sometimes with 'maybe this drive is write protected'.) I have something like

I did not find the solution to my problem reading other posts so I apologize in advance if this question has been solved in a previous thread.I recently started having input/output errors when trying to access directories on my external HD. Today I moved the content of my external HD to a single directory before starting a backup. Since then I can not access this backup directory anymore although the external HD automatically mounts when I turn it on.
I tried my luck starting the external HD in Windows but it wont show up in the explorer. What should I do to be able to mount it in windows and is there any way this would fix the problem?I'm running xubuntu kernel v 2.6.27-14-generic and the external HD is an acomdata.

On a clean install of Arch linux I edited fstab to be like so :

Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root. OpenSuse 11.2 64bit When I select a hard drive in Dolphin file manager it asks for the root password. I would like to gain easier access to the drives. The Yast Partition Manager lists all of the drives and has a dialog box to change this i.e. user can mount the drive. Can we change this feature on the run, while the system is running ? The Fstab file is not listing all of the drives, so I cannot just edit the config here.

I have a dual boot system with OpenSUSE 11.3 and Windows XP. I would like to have OpenSUSE mount the windows drives (C,D,E) only when one particular user logs in, and not be accessible for the other users. I have tried playing with the fstab options (do not mount at startup + user can mount, creating a new user group 'mounters' and replacing the 'users' in th the fstab line with 'mounters' etc.) but this is not doing what I want.

I'm having a problem mounting a vfat partition using fstab... If I don't use fstab and mount it manually, everything works fine. But if I add a line to fstab, it will mount, but will have root permission only - so I can't write to it. can mount another partition (ext4) through fstab and everything works fine. Just not sure why there's a problem with the vfat partion. Also, if after mounting it through fstab I try to unmount it, it gives an error saying only root can unmonut it.

I have looked at a LOT of forum posts and other sites trying to solve this problem but I have had no luck. I've seen the following:[URL].. I have an entry in my fstab that lets root mount a samba share on a Windows Server 2003 machine and gives users full read/write access to the share. The fstab entry looks like:

However, when a normal user tries to mount the share they get one of two errors:
1. If I have /sbin/mount.cifs set to 777
