I recently dumped XP and installed Fedora 14. Since then I have been unable to access the BIOS Setup Screen.The Laptop is Fuitzu Siemans D Series 8820, The BIOS version is not in the manual. wouldn't have thought Fedora could write to the BIOS.Perhaps it is special key presses causing the problem.I am impressed with Fedora 14.

I was using irssi in screen but lost connection. After I ssh'd back in to the server, I can no longer attach to that screen. screen -ls shows that the screen is already attached. I tried screen -D to force detach it, and it said detach but screen -ls still says it's attached. I tried screen -x and it just hangs there.

I dual booted my system with Linux Mint on a Windows 7 operating platform. I later thought it would be better to use Ubunta as I am a newbie to the system and there is more help available. I tried to uninstall Linux Mint through Windows but I am not sure I did. I then installed Ubunta from a CD and the whole system crashed. I am now unable to boot beyond the BIOS screen and am using Ubunta CD to access the internet. I would be grateful if you could shed any light on what has happened. Unfortunately I have no separate boot up disc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a Raid 2+0 a couple of days ago with windows 7, and everything was working fine until today. I left my computer for a couple of hours and when i came back all i see is this black screen with a blinking cursor, then i tried everything on the bios but every time i tried to boot it kept stuck there, right after the bios POST.Then i tried changing the SATA ports, that was something that fixed similar problems on my old Mobo, but this is strange because this mobo has 1 week, and the HD's (2x seagate 500gb) have 2 days, so they should be fine.
Then i tried with my ubuntu lucid lynx live cd, it has saved my life many times, it always works flawlessly and i thought i could use it to restore the boot files, but i was very surprised when it failed as well, it pops a message saying something like "invalid user pwsuid "user: unknown"{0}". Tried it many times with no luck, only that same message...Now i managed to boot from a "slitaz" linux dist. thats about 30mb, it has many useful tools.I can see the partitions/HD's on the Gparted and mount applications, but i still i havent managed to mount the raid i had on my Windows 7 install, im a bit scared of losing data, and i dont even know how to do it.Is there any way to fix thisrom the slitaz live cd?Maybe i could mount the Raid and then restore the Boot files from the slitaz live cd? I have a windows image i could use on the Raid, and i could copy the image files to a partition, make it primary, active and bootable...I really dont know, maybe that wont help either because the ubuntu live cd couldnt boot, i really dont know what whats going on and what could be the cause of this... maybe a worm/virus
I've got a problem on my Ubuntu 10.04. The login screen disapeared, and all that remains is the default background. I mean, the computer turns on normallyut when it gets to the screen where there should be the users names to login there's only the background. Is it possible to reconfigure that anyway

I'm helping my brother setup a server he has. The server has a 3Ware 9690SA Hardware RAID card, and it has 4 x 2Tb 5400 RPM Samsung Harddrives. When I boot into the 3Ware BIOS, it recognizes all 4 drives, no problem. What he wants to do is install them in RAID 10 for a 4 Tb mirrored volume for performance and redundancy. When I try to create a RAID array with the 4 drives, and set it to use RAID 10, it only allows me to utilize 2079 Gb (1/4 x 8 Tb), which is half of what I would expect for this RAID config.
Assuming I go ahead and allow it to build the array with this volume, we can go on to install Fedora 14 with no issue, but still only 2 Tb are available. This is our first time setting up a RAID array like this, I've also tried enabling Auto-carving to insure that I have support for physical volumes larger than 2 Tb, but to no avail. With the version of Linux we're running, and the RAID card he's got, it should support greater than 2 Tb PVs either way though.
I was in the middle of deleting the Xine movie player, and clicked a box wrong. I lost everything possible on the graphical desktop as well as a log in screen for Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic). Since then I did a few things:1. apt-get install ubuntu-desktop2. apt-get install kubuntu-desktop3. apt-get remove kubuntu-desktopAfter all this, I still have the login screen for Kubuntu. But I don't want that. I want to get back to the Ubuntu login screen, and the orange colored desktop. Right now -- after I log in -- I only have a terminal to use. And I have the blue background of Kubuntu. What do I need to do to get rid of the Kubuntu graphics and back to my original login screen, plus the Ubuntu (karmic) graphics and toolbars / menus?

When I get to the screen where I select what drive to install on, there are no drives listed. The hard drives were completely formatted before starting the 13 installation. I thought I'd look into methods of recovering from a lost password for future use, how to change the passwd and shadow should I need to. So I started an X session, vi'd my .swp files then logged off. Perhaps I changed one of these files accidentally, but my intent was just to view them which I did. After starting up my computer the next day and logging in I began an X session - "startx". The session appears to have started, but with a black screen and an active mouse cursor.
I sshed to a server a week ago, then ran *screen* and created a few windows in my screen session. I then ran a few programs on those screens. All the programs were running in the background (I run them with &). I did not close or detach from the screen sessions. So I was still connected to those screen sessions from my client machine.
Then, this morning I find my client machine rebooted. When I do screen -ls I find there are no screens available to reattach to. But that is not the worst part. The strange thing is that all my processes (which were running on the server) have disappeared as well, even though they were running in the background. I thought 1) using screen I will be able to re-attach to old screens when my client restarts, 2) If I have sshed to a server and have run programs in the background, restarting the client should not stop those programs (even if I had not used screen).
In my corporate environment, I'm required to run a Windows machine that acquires a VNC session on a machine in the server farm. My windows machine is dual head with different resolution monitors ( 1600x1080 on left and 1920x1200 on right). If I create a VNC session that spans the monitors, then maximizing a window in the VNC session causes it to stretch across both my monitors.
Instead, I want a "maximize" event to behave like it does on my windows machine -- I only want to maximize to the display that the window is on.
How can I define what, what I'll call, "maximize regions"? Regions in the VNC graphical plane where when I click "maximize", the window only expands to the region it currently ( and mostly) resides in.
Can I do this in gnome, X, xrandr, or some other magical interface?
I'm having epic problems with my sound card and upon going through the Sound Troubleshooting, It says to activate my sound card through the BIOS Configuration Screen.How on earth do I find that?

Whenever I boot up, the bios screen seems to hang around for 20-30 seconds before it disappears and boots up. From the time the bios screen disappears it takes about 20 secs for Ubuntu to finish loading (which is fine).So, is it possible to speed up the bios time? If so, how?

For some reason the O/S is only recognising one of the monitors, it knows exactly what the Make and model of the monitor is but doesnt appear to know that there is another monitor plugged in. It constantly says that there is 2 screens plugged in but lists the second screen as "CRT-0" even if no DVI cable is plugged into the second screen. This has really troubled me and has really got me thinking. I have set-up other Dual-screen setups with exactly the same hardware previously and it has worked fine? I am using a Lenovo A58 Tower with an Nvidia Quadro FX-380 Graphics card that I know is capable of dual Dual-link DVI output! With 2 x LG W3000-H Monitors running Fedora 12.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a new monitor (a used one), so i hooked up my very old PC. I went to the living-room and checked something. I went back and got a black screen. i did a "cold reboot" (?) and: nothing. Not even the BIOS-messages.
Now i am missing the terms: I replaced the "thing" where the monitor gets plugged (i would say its a PCI-slot, but as the graphics are build-in it doesn't seem to be a graphics-card. I simply don't know. I searched for PCI-slot +monitor and that picture should show it: picture). I rebooted with a live CD and voila: i get a screen. I rebooted into the installed OS and i get a screen. Then it freezes. "Cold reboot" (if it is called that way): again nothing.

I have a problem where my PC will stop at the BIOS logo screen after a reboot. The keyboard and mouse don't get power ie no lights. I can power off / on and it will boot normally. The problem started after a fresh install and after installing the updates. ie before updates I could reboot and it was ok. I moved from Slackware and have Win7 and they don't have this problem. Also Ubuntu and Arch rebooted normally when I tried them. I have Opensuse 11.4 x64 on it's own HDD (Samsung F3) The system board is an Asus P8P67 Deluxe (Sandy Bridge) and the HDD is on a SATA3 port. Could it have something to do with the EFI BIOS? Would it be worth trying a newer kernel? it may better support my hardware. I'm hesitant as I don't want to break Lirc as it took awhile to get it working properly on the stock kernel.
Also where can I add '/etc/init.d/lirc restart' so I don't have to run it manually every time time I launch XBMC. I couldn't find 'rc.local'
For anyone reading this I was wondering if there is a way for me to change the dell bios splash screen to another picture, like Tux the penguine or something like that.I've seen alot of people say not to do this due to the editing of the bios and the probability of crashing your system.I was wondering if there was a safe and easy process for doing this???

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get an external monitor hooked up to my laptop with the intention to use both simultaneously using TwinView. Actually, I'm not "trying to make it work": everything works fine, using NVIDIA X Server Settings. However, when I reboot these settings are lost and I have to manually expand my desktop again.
I've found that running NVIDIA X Server Settings as root should allow one to "Save to X Configuration File", in order to let it automatically load the right settings. When I click this option, however, I'm asked to manually provide a file name with my home folder as the default location. I'm confused how to proceed - where should I save this configuration? Or should I be taking a completely different approach in the first place? (note: KDE 'Display and Monitor' doesn't work. Only when I use the NVIDIA-thingy KDE will recognize that my desktop is expanded to a 3600x1080 resolution)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 (using Update Manager) in an attempt to get to 10.04. Installation and upgrade seemed to go OK until reboot. Now I only get a black screen - I don't see the grub menu, I don't even see any way to access the BIOS menu- not even a blinking cursor. I can hear it start and I can see the numlocks key go on. Ctrl-Alt-PrtScrn-B does not reboot (nor does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace- but I didn't expect that would) Surprisingly Ctrl-Alt-Del does (or at least it sounds like it does) reboot the system. I do have a NVIDIA cards and after reading around I suspect that this is likely the problem but I have no idea what to do now..
Here's what I've attempted:
I figured since I wanted to get to 10.04 anyway and this was so troublesome I could just go do a fresh install with a Live CD or USB to 10.04. However, even with a live CD or USB I still just get a blank screen.
Continually holding down F2 (and other function keys to try to access Bios)
Holding down Shift while booting
Esc while booting
Moving the monitor to the VGA port (as opposed to the NVIDIA card).
Other information...
Previously I had tried to upgrade to 9.10, but ran into problems with it not recognizing my RAID, so I just found it easier to go back to 9.04. (So although this is likely a graphics problem I guess the possibility is that now it doesn't even see my boot drive- although- if that was the case, I'd assume I wouldn't have the same problems from the CD or USB boot.) My ultimate goal is to get this to 10.04, if I could do it with an upgrade instead of a fresh install I'd prefer that, but at this point just getting back to a functioning computer would be ideal. I see many options in other posts for how to get back once you can access a command line- but since I can't even see that, I'm not sure what to do now.
As you know,whenever user turns the PC on,a beep sound is heard,then the bios starts,but recently this beep sound doesn,t come out of the case,and,so the bios does not start(nothing seen on the screen),then i have to hard reboot several times,and mostly,i have to shut down for some seconds to remove this problem,also sometimes this beep sound comes out but repeatedly for many times.
I am suspicious about the shut down button,because it,s a long time that this button usually is blinking.

Been trying to setup my xorg.conf file to have a 1920x1200 screen.Strange behavior: when my X starts up, I see my mouse cursor, can move it around. It's small enough to suggest the 1920x1200 resolution took, is working.However, the rest of the screen remains black. No login prompt.I've looked at /var/log/xorg.conf, no errors.Is there something else I can look at?

Every thing regarding the install seemed fine until the request to restart the computer. I hit the restart and it will not boot up. Computer goes thru the normal restart screens.
Screen flashes with bios info--no hard drive detected, then proceeds to show booting from hd, then loads grub stage 1.5 (not grub 2)and screen goes blank.
