General :: File Management - Create Mirror Of Directory But Ignore Deletions?
Feb 7, 2011
I would like to create a directory public_html/archive that is a mirror of public_html/images, except that deletions in the images directory don't cause corresponding deletions in archive.
I was going to manage all of this in code, but then I figured, maybe the system can handle it for me in a robust way.
Note that the website will reference archive in real time, so it has to be an instant mirror and not something done nightly, etc.

I am performing a dry run using Rsync on 2 different boxes. While i'm doing that, Under destination directory, I want a specific directory x to be ignored for sync. Please let me know the exact pattern to ignore the directory. The current command I'm using is:rsync -avnc --delete $LOCAL_DIR $USERNAME@$DESTINATION_IP:$REMOTE_DIRunder DESTINATION_IP, I would want to ignore a particular directory under REMOTE_DIR.

Is there a way to force rsync to not make directories in its destination directory; ie, to simply dump all of the files from the source directory directly into the destination without copying any of the folders that the files were originally in? I tried --no-dirs, but that seems to only be for empty directories.

Code:
$ echo 2 * 3 > 5 is a valid inequality. This will create a file in the current directory named '5' with the number '2' in it, the names of all the files in the current directory, followed by the number '3' and 'is a valid inequality.'
What I do not understand is why 'is a valid inequality' gets written to this file. I thought it would write '2', all the file names in the current directory, then '3' into the file called '5'. Why does the 'is a valid inequality.' get written to the file also?

At the Get Slackware page at the Slackware website it gives a list of addresses which when I click one of the addresses it redirects to another page with a list of mirror images. Which address and which mirror image do I need to work with Kubuntu 11.04 on my netbook so I can create a USB startup disk? With my connection speed these mirror image downloads take about an hour and a half and I cannot just be guessing which mirror image to download.

I get the following error whenever I launch bash:
Code:
mkdir: cannot create directory `/dev/cgroup/cpu/user/5900': No such file or directory
bash: /dev/cgroup/cpu/user/5900/tasks: No such file or directory
bash: /dev/cgroup/cpu/user/5900/notify_on_release: No such file or directory
It seems like it's probably from this part of .bashrc:
[Code]...
What does this code do, why, and what's causing it to go wrong?

I need to backup my home folder (and a few other folders) on an organizational Linux NFS system where my account will be expiring soon, onto a personal hard drive (which is not using a Linux filesystem). I access the account through SSH and SFTP. I want to backup all metadata for these files and directories and everything in them, including dates, owners, groups, UID/GID numbers, CHMOD permissions, etc. How can I go about doing this? Do I need to run the LS command recursively on the directory with certain settings of what information to display, and pipe the results to a file so that the information will be in a file regardless of which filesystem I move it to? Or is there a way to save all the metadata using something like TAR/GZ? If it's with TAR/GZ, then how do I view this metadata on other filesystems that I move the archive to, and will the users/groups stored remain intact as long as it's not extracted?
In addition, do you know how to do this for SELinux metadata and AFS (Andrew File System) metadata too? (These will be for another filesystem later on, but if don't know the answer to either of these, please still answer the above.)

I'm working with a dual-boot laptop running Ubuntu 10.0/Windows 7 and a Debian 5 VPS while the OS's shouldn't have much impact on my question.
What I would like to do is create a html page that I can upload to my VPS which lists all of the files/folders on my local 2TB hard drive (Specifically media such as Movies, Music, TV Shows...). The media obviously will not reside on the server, but I would like to at least have a list which will allow me to select, for instance, a bands artist so that it redirects me to the albums in the directory below.
Ultimately, I'm looking for Open Directory Browsing without actually having the media on my server. I have been attempting to create something to this effect using lynx, however, I'm not sure if it can be done with this command or if it's even possible for that matter.

I recently bought an host to have a personal website and would like to create a bash script to create make a mirror copy of it and then add it to crontab to run once a week. Essentially what I want to do is to get the website by using wget -m ftp://user***@ftp.host/mydir
Once this is done I'd like to have everything in an archive called mysite.date.tar.7z I've no experience at all of bash scripting but I guess this should be an easy task? How to make the user and password not visible ? Is there any other option better than wget? (maybe rsync it works better?)

Since I own one of those Centrino based Core 2 notebooks that create annoying buzzing noises when idle (= entering C3 or C4 power saving states), I'm looking for a program that creates artificial CPU usage. It should allow me to limit the CPU usage to a certain percentage (I know that there are a lot of easy ways to create 100% usage ;-).
Another option would be to disable the C3 or C4 states, but in newer kernels the sysfs interface to set the max_cstate on-the-fly was removed for some reason, and I don't always want to reboot after switching from AC to battery (and vice versa).

I am a student studying computer science course.
Well, I am facing problem when doing lab questions.
I must use DLXLinux bundled in Bochs (bochs.sourceforge.net).
I am required to use the /usr/local directory.
In /usr directory, there is no directory named 'local' but there is one thing called 'local@'. So, when I try to use mkdir command to create 'local' directory in /usr , there are error "cannot make directory.....".
Look at my screenshot at [url].

I am trying to create a local mirror/repository for CentOS 5.6 for updates and network installs. I have read the page here on the site about how to do it over and over again, and I still can't figure it out. I have already created the directory, but right after that, I can't go any further. I know this is much easier than I probably think it is. Would someone mind telling me, (in beginners terms) on how to do this? I just want the 'os' package and nothing else.

I'm new here and hope to profit from your immense linux knowledge and of course to share my own experience where I can.
I'm in a student organization and we use a file server that runs linux. I can log in through ssh and copy using scp using login and password (no rsa/dsa keys because most users are windows users using winSCP and they're lacking in computer knowledge so we don't require them to mess around with keys)
However, I don't have network access everywhere, so I'd like to make a copy on my laptop harddisk of some of the folders I use most frequently. Note that I don't need it to copy files from my pc back to the remote server so I don't need two-way sync. Deleting the local copy every time and downloading a new full copy is not an option as we are talking about several gigabytes and the download speed is limited. Normally I would use Unison, however, this requires unison to be installed on both pc's and I can't install any software on the file server so this is not an option.
Any ideas on how to achieve this? I'm reasonable knowledgable about linux so I don't mind tinkering with some config files and using command line applications.

So in an environment where I have 40+ sets of completely unique sets of logon credentials. The only way I've been able to manage this is by keeping them in a hidden and heavily encrypted text file in my home dir.Would like to hear alternatives to this approach if there are any, BTW. Right now I have a script that automates the process of un-encrypting the file, launching an editor and then clean-up with shred -u after editing and re-encrypting.
What bugs me is the interim where I have the file in an un-encrypted state on my drive. It doesn't seem necessary. I have a view script that allows me to see what's in the file without saving it to the drive.

I know there has to be an easier way to do this than to download each file individually. On an ftp site I would just use
PHP Code...
But with those files being on an HTTP server and wget not supporting HTTP file globbing I'm at a loss.
What is a one step method to recursively download all files in a directory on an HTTP server?
