Ubuntu :: Setup File Server - USB Terabyte - Folder Management

May 28, 2010

I setup a file server using Ubuntu Server edition following the guid by Xam @ [URL]. With only a few exceptions to minor tweaks the guide worked perfectly. The difference is I use a USB terabyte for data storage but that's not an issue. It works FANTASTIC right now. I can manage files from any computer in the house (vista xp linuxmint, ubuntu etc).

The USB is mounted as /dev/sdb1 /media/store ntfs 0 0 in my fstab file. It's sharing the root directory of the disk and users have access to the entire thing. Now that it's all working, I want to know if anyone knows a way I can not let the entire disk be shared but only select folders off the root for example /media/store/Music or /media/store/Videos.

Fedora Installation :: Generate A Kickstart File From An Existing Setup ?

Jan 4, 2009

I have recently been given the task of setting up some thirty odd netbooks with F10 and i was wondering if there is a way to generate a kickstart file from the first netbook (my one lol ) that i have setup to our needs so as to use it to create the same install on the rest of the netbooks. i had thought that i could use the anaconda-ks.cfg file in root's home dir but it is not at all representative of the custom package list i chose during the install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Swap File Management Or Downgrade

Jun 28, 2010

Alright, I just wanted to see if this would even work, so I installed Ubuntu Lucid Linx 10.04 on a 2001 Sony Vaio with 1.7 Ghz. Intel P4 processor and, yes you're reading this correctly, only 256 MB of PC2100 Ram. I dumped in my own PCI wlan card and 64 MB Radeon 9000 Pro AGP card, then I did the installation.

Although I already ordered 2 mem chips (512 MB each) for this system which will max it out, I also created a 5 GB swap partition since I figured that this would greatly enhance the installation and consequent usage thereafter. Now mind you, the installation of 32bit Lucid worked like a charm. Slower than normal, but like a charm. Wifi is working and even the 3D desktop settings are working in advanced mode. BUT the system is just way too slow to react to the mouse and keyboard. I'm certain that the lack of memory has a lot to do with that although I was secretly hoping that the huge swap file would help to make a big perfomance difference. So here now my questions:

1. The swap file doesn't really appear to have made any difference at all. How come?
2. If I wanted to "downgrade" to Xubuntu, how would I accomplish this?
3. Would it be a better idea to just start over with an installation of Crunchbang instead?

I'm trying to get this system working for a relative who's never had a computer before. Whatever I end up with on this machine has to be as simple as possible to use while maintaining some semblence of decent perfomance. I'm sure before too long they'll want to enhance their desktop looks/theme as well so consideration needs to be given to that too. Your suggestions and comments would be appreciated. Again, Ubuntu Lucid runs just fine, although really really slow. Internet is no problem.

Fedora Installation :: Setup XP File And Printer Sharing In Home Network

May 16, 2009

I'm going to setup a File and Printer Sharing in my little home network... 3 Computers actively connected to the Web through a single ADSL2+ Wireless Router (number of Computers will increase later) At the moment 2 of the computers are running Fedora 10 and 1 running Windows XP...

Now i want to setup the 3 machines to use 1 printer which is connected to one of the Fedora 10 machines, and i want File Sharing to be enabled so each machine can easily view each others shared files and also be able to print when ever needed (ofcourse the machine with the printer will have to be on for the printing process to happen) I've installed Samaba on each Fedora Machine, enabled sharing but i dont seem to be able to view the Windows machine or each other....

The Yast control center stays open, but the Software Management window closes.I must reopen Software Management to do more.It is a small problem, yes, but annoying to me.Is there anyway to set it up so that it will ask if I wish to install more?

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 Management Of Network Card / Wired/wireless Setup?

May 1, 2011

I am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.

There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:

- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter

Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.

Ubuntu Servers :: Replacing Home Network - Central User Management Setup?

Jul 22, 2010

I am replacing a home network - Windows Server 2003 and 5 PCs (XP Pro) with UBUNTU 10.4 LTS Server and client versions. I am keeping a couple of the PCs with dual boot until I can migrate everything over (Having some issues with iTunes, Family Tree Maker, Media serving, DVD decrypt and a couple of others, but that is for another post). It was great fun getting the server up and running using only shell commands. Took me ages just to get a folder shared! Migrating the data over from NTFS to ext3 was also fun given the limited space on the partitions.

I really only want to use the server for communal network type things ... central user account maintenance, shared folders for music, video etc and data backup. I don't need it to be performing server functions on the Internet e.g. web server etc although that may come later. How I set up central user management? All the PCs are currently setup with local user ids, and it is a bit of a pain to go round each PC every time I change something.

The server is not always up, so I need to be able to log into the local PC without it being active. I was using Active Directory on Server 2003, but I don't need anything that complex really ... just 3 or 4 users to manage. I have been looking at the setup tutorial at [URL] but am not sure how relevant a lot of it is. I have SSH setup so I can login remotely, NFS is working to share the folders, but that is about all I have done so far.

Networking :: Setup A PXE Kickstart Installation - File (ks.cfg) Not Picked The Machine

Aug 4, 2010

I am in a VMware environment, and using RHEL 5.4. I am trying to setup a PXE Kickstart installation. For this I have configured DHCP and TFTP, made a kickstart file and shared it in the network through HTTP. My problem is that somehow kickstart file (ks.cfg) is not picked by the machine in which I am installing the OS. Although, the contents of my kickstart file can be viewed over HTTP. Please see KS_Error.jpg.

[Code]....

However, I believe DHCP and TFTP is working fine as I am getting the correct IP 192.168.1.115 which I have set in /etc/dhcpd.conf. Also, my label 1 which I have set in /tftpboot/linux-install/pxelinux.cfg/default is working fine as I able to locate initrd and vmlinuz. Please see attached Image_1.jpg how to troubleshoot this. I need to paste any of my configuration files?.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 64-bit Server With Vmware And SSD - Setup The File System On Each Partition?

Apr 24, 2010

I have just bought two SSD, Intel X25-M 80GB, to install Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit server with vmware on a computer with 8GB RAM. I have tried to find out how to set up the system, but is somewhat confused on the setup. The idea is to use software raid to aviod data loss if one SSD is giving up in the future. When installing I have thought about using tree partitions.Swap Root Vmware vhd When reading about how to optimize vwware I found this:

Quote: Disks, Disks, Disks: I always attempt to put my guest OSs on their own partition and I format that partition thusly because VMWare server reads guests in huge blocks (/dev/sdb1 is the partition my guests reside on): mke2fs -b 4096 -R stride=8 /dev/sdb1

Then I set the block readahead value to somewhere around 16384, but you can go as high as twice that value (in my case this is an entire disk array, so I dropped the partition indicator): blockdev setra 16384 /dev/sdb

How should I setup the file system on each partition? When using an SSD, each partition should be aligned. How do I do that? Let say I would like to have 4GB swap, 60GB root and the rest for vmware. At last, I have fount out that full support for TRIM is supported by kernel v2.6.33. Ubuntu 10.04 is using v2.6.32? If so, for full TRIM support I must upgrade kernel to v2.6.33.

General :: Encrypted Password File Management

The only way I've been able to manage this is by keeping them in a hidden and heavily encrypted text file in my home dir.Would like to hear alternatives to this approach if there are any, BTW. Right now I have a script that automates the process of un-encrypting the file, launching an editor and then clean-up with shred -u after editing and re-encrypting.

What bugs me is the interim where I have the file in an un-encrypted state on my drive. It doesn't seem necessary. I have a view script that allows me to see what's in the file without saving it to the drive.
