I know this is possible in GUI gnome. But is it possible to do it too in shell command? Let say if i type this in shell:
#file.txt
then it will open gnome-editor in nautilus which open file.txt. gnome is the desktop manager. nautilus is the explorer windows in gnome. gnome-editor is one like notepad in MS windows.
i cannot seem to find a proper way to make Java my default application to open .jar files. I just made a new Debian 8.3 install on my laptop HP Pavilion G6 and the default application for opening .jar files is the Archive Manager. But when i go to "Open with.." section on right-clicking the .jar file, i get no JRE or JDK option to choose. I just installed the openjdk 7. I can manually run them from the bash, but it would be much more convenient if i just double-clicked it. Here is what i get when i run several commands in the bash :
1) which java ->Code: Select all /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/bin/java

I would like to get the predefined application icon to open the same file types.
for instance: *.avi, *.mp3 to have the VLC icon
and other application to have the icon of their default application.
So far I only found tips to install single icons or to add icon packs. :S
and is there any way to when you install an application make it default for such file types ?
I am trying to change the default open with application of a .mpg file but when I click on properties it shows me this.. how can I fix it.

At present if I double click an mp3 it opens in the movie viewer for some reason. I know I can use "open with..." to get a file to open in Rythymbox instead, but I have over 800 mp3 files and want to change the default for all of them.
Is there a way to make ncftp hold the connection open longer than the default? a ping every 10 sec or something? I feel like after I push a change up to the server before I can verify everything is working as expected and get back into ncftp the connection is closed by the remote host.

For example, say I create a mime type associated to every file with the pattern *.abc. Lets say I associate this file type to application 'my_app'.
If I have file 'my_file.abc' in current folder, what I want is that when I enter only 'my_file.abc' at the prompt, it executes 'my_app' feeding it with 'my_file.abc' as first argument. (assuming of course 'my_app' is in the path)

There is an option to browse for another application that I can set as default.But where do I have to browse to find the Thunderbird program. I have to same problem with pdf -files. In particular I would like to make Firefox open on the second monitor. For now I am just manually moving Firefox to the second monitor, but if I close it down and open it again, it automatically opens on the first monitor. Is there a way to make it automatically open on the second monitor?
I have two Nvidia cards in my machine. I did have one monitor connected to each video card, but I was unable to get a dual monitor set up to work like this, so I plugged both monitors into one card and the dual monitor set up works fine like. Is there a way to make dual monitors work if you have a monitor connected to each video card? When I had a monitor connected to each video card, I could see the second monitor in the Nvidia settings, but it always disabled it. I could enable it, but it would grey out twin view. After I enabled it, I'll restart the X server, the second monitor would auto disable again.
I'm using Gnome, I don't have the above issue in Xfce4 - it works fine with one monitor connected to each card in Xfce4. However, I want to use Gnome. I've searched, but have not been able to find a solution to either of these issues. I read you can fix the application to launch in a second monitor with wmctrl. I've tried to install it with yum, but I get the message: No package wmctrl available.
I am trying to strip the .wav file extension from a file name so that I can pass the result to lame encoder. I started to write a BASH script that looks like this:

It doesn't work very well though. For the life of me I can't seem to discover how to use basename in a suitable way for a script like this.
am using slackware 13 and want to make Open Officeriter default when I click on a document. Currently when I click on doc it opens kwrite. Similarly when I click on an audio file it opens Gxine. I prefer MPlayer.

Anyhow, I am downloading them using Internet Download Manager running in an XP virtual machine in VMWare on my Ubuntu 10.04 PC (due to the queuing, restart and speed capabilities of IDM). This of course does not work in Linux. I have researched the Linux rename command and reviewed a lot of examples. However, I have not found a way to add an extension to a batch of files which are named with no extension to start with. The spaces in the file names also seem to present an issue. I have installed Gantt Project (project management application) under 10.04. The system identifies the .gan files produced by the program as xml files. How do I tell the system to open .gan files with the GanttProject application?
I tried right click on the file to open and using "Open with other application" but the GanttProject application does not appear to be in the list of available programs.
I have this problem, that I want a specific .exe file to open in Mono, but all other .exe files to open in Wine.
