Ubuntu :: Setup File Server - USB Terabyte - Folder Management

May 28, 2010

I setup a file server using Ubuntu Server edition following the guid by Xam @ [URL]. With only a few exceptions to minor tweaks the guide worked perfectly. The difference is I use a USB terabyte for data storage but that's not an issue. It works FANTASTIC right now. I can manage files from any computer in the house (vista xp linuxmint, ubuntu etc).

The USB is mounted as /dev/sdb1 /media/store ntfs 0 0 in my fstab file. It's sharing the root directory of the disk and users have access to the entire thing. Now that it's all working, I want to know if anyone knows a way I can not let the entire disk be shared but only select folders off the root for example /media/store/Music or /media/store/Videos.

General :: What File System For 1 Terabyte Drive

Mar 17, 2009

I'm going to be getting myself a TB drive for general purpose storage later on this month/beginning of April and I'm looking for opinions on what file system to use on the drive. Currently I have a couple of large drives, from ~250 - ~500 gig, formatted as ext3 but once in a while I have to wait for ages for a fsck to run. I know I can disable it if I want, or use another file system but just don't...

I've read that ext4 is hugely improved over ext3 in a number of ways, the time taken to do these scans included. But saying that I've also read, can't remember the source, that the one "huge" problem with Linux is the way it deals with large partitions, i.e the time taken to scan the drive for errors. So in a round-about way, what options do I have for a reliable, fast file system for large drives? I know there's plenty of documentation on the net about this, and I'm reading those, but I want some "real-life" opinions. Is ext4 stable enough to use now? What about JFS/XFS/ReiserFS etc?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: MTP Device Folder Management

Apr 20, 2010

I own a Creative Zen, and have already successfully used both Rhythmbox and Gnomad to transfer files to it. But the problem is that I can't manage my "files" (not my "songs"). Banshee didn't work, and Exaile is not recognising my Zen (probably I'm missing some libraries or plugins). I've heard Exaile let's me manage the files in my MTP device, is that so?Whenever I transfer any song to my Zen, it is transfered to my /music folder instead of being transfered into an /artist-album or an artist/album folder. It is kind of messy, I want to keep my files organized.

And if I try to move my files manually (from my HD to my device, or within my device) by letting Nautilus automatically mount my Zen as an external device, then it doesn't recognizes the files I've moved. So, is there any workaround for me to manage my files in Zen without making them unrecognizable to it, say, using Rhythmbox? Or is there any other software that allows me to manage my files in such manner?(From what I've googled, it seems that this is a general problem for most of MTP devices, hence the title of the thread.)

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup A Server 10.04 Lts As File Server?

Apr 3, 2011

I set up a ubuntu server 10.04 lts as file server in a network filled with xp, win 2003 and win 2008.

I noticed that if from any bill's SO machine i copy a file (for example a vob file of 1gb, or a lot of doc and pdf files) in the samba server, while the copy is in progress if in another windows I browse other folders shared in Samba, the copy process stops and say ' the name in the network is no more available( or something like this). It seems that samba pay attention on the fact that a user is browsing the share and doing so it seems that Samba forget that in one of its share there was a copy in progress, very annoing. A file server cannot do that, in this way is useless.

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 Management Of Network Card / Wired/wireless Setup?

May 1, 2011

I am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.

There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:

- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter

Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.

Ubuntu Servers :: Replacing Home Network - Central User Management Setup?

Jul 22, 2010

I am replacing a home network - Windows Server 2003 and 5 PCs (XP Pro) with UBUNTU 10.4 LTS Server and client versions. I am keeping a couple of the PCs with dual boot until I can migrate everything over (Having some issues with iTunes, Family Tree Maker, Media serving, DVD decrypt and a couple of others, but that is for another post). It was great fun getting the server up and running using only shell commands. Took me ages just to get a folder shared! Migrating the data over from NTFS to ext3 was also fun given the limited space on the partitions.

I really only want to use the server for communal network type things ... central user account maintenance, shared folders for music, video etc and data backup. I don't need it to be performing server functions on the Internet e.g. web server etc although that may come later. How I set up central user management? All the PCs are currently setup with local user ids, and it is a bit of a pain to go round each PC every time I change something.

The server is not always up, so I need to be able to log into the local PC without it being active. I was using Active Directory on Server 2003, but I don't need anything that complex really ... just 3 or 4 users to manage. I have been looking at the setup tutorial at [URL] but am not sure how relevant a lot of it is. I have SSH setup so I can login remotely, NFS is working to share the folders, but that is about all I have done so far.

Ubuntu Servers :: Secure File Server Setup

Dec 29, 2010

I am going to set up a file server on Ubuntu. I have searched a while, but can't seem to find a guide to what I want. The requirements specifications are the following:File server: possible to upload, change and download files.Linux (Ubuntu) clients, Windows clients if possible.Access restriction to deny access to other than registered users.Only the user should be able to read the content of the files.Ideally root should not be able to see the individual files, but in worst case it is ok for root to see the files.Root should not be able to open the files.Point 1-3 is easy to find out how to set up. But I can't seem to find a way to deny root to view the files. The only solution I can think of is to encrypt files or a whole folder, but I don't know how to set it up.

The setup is for a home network, but the server used as a file server will have a web server as well. If someone manages to get access to the server I don't want them to be able to read the files.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 64-bit Server With Vmware And SSD - Setup The File System On Each Partition?

Apr 24, 2010

I have just bought two SSD, Intel X25-M 80GB, to install Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit server with vmware on a computer with 8GB RAM. I have tried to find out how to set up the system, but is somewhat confused on the setup. The idea is to use software raid to aviod data loss if one SSD is giving up in the future. When installing I have thought about using tree partitions.Swap Root Vmware vhd When reading about how to optimize vwware I found this:

Quote: Disks, Disks, Disks: I always attempt to put my guest OSs on their own partition and I format that partition thusly because VMWare server reads guests in huge blocks (/dev/sdb1 is the partition my guests reside on): mke2fs -b 4096 -R stride=8 /dev/sdb1

Then I set the block readahead value to somewhere around 16384, but you can go as high as twice that value (in my case this is an entire disk array, so I dropped the partition indicator): blockdev setra 16384 /dev/sdb

How should I setup the file system on each partition? When using an SSD, each partition should be aligned. How do I do that? Let say I would like to have 4GB swap, 60GB root and the rest for vmware. At last, I have fount out that full support for TRIM is supported by kernel v2.6.33. Ubuntu 10.04 is using v2.6.32? If so, for full TRIM support I must upgrade kernel to v2.6.33.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup Simple File Server In A Native Environment?

Dec 7, 2010

I have two computers on my home lan I am trying to share files between...My desktop which is running Ubuntu Server 10.10 (x64) with a GUI, and my laptop which is running Ubuntu Desktop 10.04. I have tried a million different tutorials regarding SAMBA setup, but they never work.

In addition, most of those tutorials are geared towards hybrid Linux/Windows environment. I do not have any microsoft product in my home. I have created the share on my server, but I'm not sure how to connect to it from the laptop (once again at this point in the tutorials it explains how to access it from a Windows PC). I tried using the menu doing this:

Places-->Connect To Server-->Service Type-->Windows Share (for the server I tried my server hostname and IP) to no avail. Does anyone know of a recent step by step tutorial for setting up a complete Ubuntu environment? Is there a simpler method I can use since I do not particularly need to use SMB protocol?

All I want to do is share my music folder from my server so I can access it (from the same LAN) on my laptop...Arrrghhh frustrating.
