I freshly installed debian lenny using the 5 DVD set that I downloaded from debian.org. I want to create a local repository for all packages that are available in DVD so that I do not insert the disc everytime I install a new software. I have searched various forums but not able to figure the right way to do it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Fedora 12 on a desktop PC and as my first experience of Linux, I am really impressed. I have now installed several packages and have reached a point where I would like to share the PC with other user (family members in the same house). My question seems so basic I am almost embarrassed to ask it but could some one explain the best way to create a local shared directory that could be used to store files accessible to everyone (e.g. music, photos, videos, documents etc.)There will be three users and as it is a family PC, they will all have full access.
Reading posts from various forums, I am little confused about what is the best way to proceed (i.e. what is Linux best practice). The simpler of the two methods is to simply make the directory using the mkdir command, followed by the chmod command to assign full access rights. Fore example if the local shared directory is called 'share'. The alternative approach assigns a group, a group administrator etc and then adds users to the group.
Wondering if the internal network will benefit of connecting to a local DNS server, rather than my ISP dns server. Can I create this local DNS server, without having an external domain, pointing to my server ?
All I want is faster lookup of known hostnames, both internally (hostnames) and externaly (cnn.com etc..)
using 10.04 . I am trying to create my own repository for packages. So that updates can be done offline. 1.I copied all packages which i usually use from
Code:
/var/cache/apt/archives
and put it in folder local_repository
2.took backup for of sources.list
[Code]....
So how to create Packages.gz and how to create repository?
I have a bunch of setup scripts (rpm packages) for setting up a new Fedora and CentOS PC. I want to try offering ubuntu as an option to the family. I know I can use alien to install the rpms but there are a lot of scripts missing on a debian based system, not to mention dependencies. Can anyone give me some pointers or point me in the right direction? Or would it just be best to build .deb packages on a debian based system?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble installing Fedora 11 using the URL method. When I put in a F11 netinstall CD, or even Disc 1, I press tab on the first option and add "askmethod" to the end of the text. Each time I point the installer to my local FTP and press enter after typing in the FTP url, the installer just hangs there. I've even tried deleting ALL the files from the F11 folder on my FTP server and downloaded ALL the files at:
ftp://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/fedora/...edora/i386/os/
Still...the same thing.
When I pointed the installer to:
ftp://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/fedora/...edora/i386/os/
Everything worked fine, albeit slow as it was DL from the NCSU FTP server.
Am I doing something wrong with my FTP server? It is anon, so there is no authentication issues.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to transfer the software and packages that's already installed. I have an ISO disc creator to take the current information on my hard disk and format it for an ISO, which I can burn onto a DVD, but what I'm wondering is, how would I go about reinstalling the OS
here's the backstory, I'm wanting to transfer the hard drive from this computer to the one I'm going to custom build once it's finished, and I'm pretty sure I would have to reinstall due to the fact that I would have to reconfigure and install new hardware drivers. If I'm wrong, please tell me so I don't waste the time and go through the trouble of this
my plan is to create an ISO of my hard disk, then backup all of my personal files, then remove them so the ISO will have more room (and I may get rid of some unnecessary packages), then get rid of everything on the hard drive (just use a livedisc of something and use a partition manager to delete all partitions on the hard drive) then move the hard drive over to the new computer, and reinstall with the ISO disc I created
the things that will be staying the same is the graphics card, some peripherals (like monitors, keyboard, wacom tablet, printer, etc...) but the motherboard has a different sound card and a different processor (I'll probably just install a different kernel to accommodate for that) and some different things that are smaller (don't forget the power supply)
offer a better method of transferring the hard drive (and don't say "just simply take the hard drive out and put it in the other computer" unless you have indisputable proof that it will work. I know it most likely won't work for multiple reasons, the drivers being one of them, the fact that windows can't do that (I have a different plan for windows that involves upgrading from vista 32bit to windows 7 64 bit))
I wonder if i can install packages that already exist in local directory using synaptic for example: I downloaded a set of programs with there dependencies and stored them in whatever folder, and i'd reinstalled my distro and i need to install just google chrome browser for instance, it's will be very difficult to install it among other packages. it will be very useful if i forced synaptic to install chrome locally instead of downloading and installing them from the internet.

m?PS. I use Ubuntu 11.04 and I am quiet new on Linux World.
I'm working with a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS system with two network interfaces (both Ethernet). I wish to setup this system such that it is simultaneously connected to my local and an OpenVPN network and able direct traffic between the connections depending on what program is sending the traffic. The problem: Under my current OpenVPN configuration all network traffic is directed to the VPN.
My OpenVPN config file (some details omitted)
--remote [gateway ip] # vpn12 load:
--remote [gateway ip] # vpn11 load:
--remote [gateway ip] # vpn15 load:
--remote [gateway ip] # vpn16 load:
[code]....
In practice, I would like OpenVPN to operate out of one of my two network interfaces and leave the other interface connected to the local network. Then by default all network traffic should be directed to my local network unless I specify (on a per program bases) that certain traffic should go though the VPN. These two network connections can (should) stay completely independent of each other and do not need to talk to each other.
error message when I ran my program that I couldn't open my local file. I have two files first one is called client, second one is called server I am using named pipes to sent a message from client to the other file called server in client I used mknod() to create the two named pipes, one for read, one for write and created new thread in client using fork() spawned a child process that executed the server file both named pipes are opened the client file got the message from the user and sent it through the named pipes to the server file when the server receives the message , it needs to verfify it is correct in the server file, a local file descriptor is created to read and send this verifing message when it is not correct but I am getting an OPEN() error when I tried to open this shared local array buff and attach it to a file descriptor where the message is kept why do I get this error in server file

I am preparing an installation for a network with small subnetworks across the country. As such, I am setting up a central repository, but would like the installation of some machines to turn themselves into mirrors at installation time (at least for their own rpms) to save bandwidth for the rest of the machines in their own sub network. Is it somehow possible to set up a local mirror at installation time?I was watching how anaconda is installing from a repository and saw that it erases each downloaded rpm as soon as it is installed, but thought maybe someone here would have an idea.

I would therefore require a local repository of the updates to CentOS5.4. When I checked I only found instructions for a full mirror. As I have no room and neither the human resources to setup and maintain a full-blown mirror, this is not a solution. However if I try to find updates for 5.4 to download in a repository-type of way I fail to find a solution. Maybe I am just not looking in the right places.
