Fedora :: NFS Mounts But No Files In Mounted Directory
Feb 10, 2011
I am trying to get NFS mounts working properly using autofs, but I'm only getting partially results. I have an auto.master set up for indirect mounts and a list of map files for each entry. Forgot to mention that when I mount the directory using /etc/fstab or setup a direct mount in /etc/auto.master I can see files in the mounted directory...

I am using back in time to back up files from home and from another mounted directory on my system (ntfs). The back-ups are occurring automatically and appear to be complete; but, I cannot delete old back-up snapshots in the backintime GUI Also with sudo nautilus or as root in terminal with (rmdir) I cannot delete the snapshots. My drive is filling up and rather than uninstalling back in time, I would like to simply delete the unneeded snapshots. How can I delete these files? Is there an rsync file that I should configure to delete these? My expectation of backintime was that it would back-up at the requested frequency and not create complete duplicate copies of the files, but, use symbolic links to unchanged files. How can I verify if this is the case? Does the cron file control this>

I'm having a bit of an issue with Lucid installed via Wubi. I stuck the OS on its own partition (30 GB in size), and don't store any large files in the Ubuntu file system (when I download something large I move it to another hard drive.) I don't have anything wacky or esoteric installed on my system.
I've been consistently having a problem where, after a few hours or a few days of being booted up, Ubuntu warns me that my available HD space is dangerously small. The amount of available HD space Ubuntu sees then shrinks from a few GB to nothing within a few minutes, and the only way I can seem to solve this is to reboot. Taking a closer look at what's happening, my Home folder balloons in size until there's no more writable space recognized. But there are no files being created or added to, so it looks like there's a bug of some sort. This SEEMS to be correlated with watching videos (or maybe it's the pulling of large files from a mounted directory into RAM? My videos are all on another HD, as mentioned before). I can generally go a few days without getting the "low space" message, but I can't seem to make it through a full 2-hour movie without getting the error.

I "upgraded" to Karmic and now my computer won't start. It shows the grub menu, I select the first Ubuntu option, and it shows the white logo. Underneath the logo these words appear, and it does nothing:Quote:One or more of the mounts listed in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted: /boot: waiting for UUID=338c820e..Press ESC to enter a recovery shell

ubuntu 9.10. Won't boot. Not a new installation, no new hardware. When I boot it up into 2.5.31-22-generic safemode it says: One or more of the mounts listed in etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted: /home: wating for UUID...
Booted up w/ live CD, fsck says that /dev/sda3 is clean I have a 320 GB hard drive, 20 GB is the linux boot, 2 GB is swap, and the rest is /home. Palimpset Disk Utility can recognize the 20 & swap, but says the rest is unrecognized.

I just reinstalled my windows partition from a backup image. Following that the Grub2 needed repair. That was accomplished and the grub2 menu along with the changes I made (to the grub screen) come up just fine. I can select my Windows 2K installation and it boots okay.when I select the "Linux 2.6.31-17-generic" the boot process appears to begin normally with the Ubuntu symbol shown, but at some point the screen goes blank and the boot process stalls. recovery mode gives me a jumbled up recovery menu. Alt-Ctrl-Delete gets me out of either. If I boot from the previous "Linux 2.6.31-14-generic", Im receiving this error during boot-Quote:"One or more of the mounts listed in etc/fstab cannot be mounted"
There are subsequent screens that warn I'm running in "low graphics mode", but I can boot to a somewhat functional system. I was able to boot it once, but get the same results with either kernelThere is a difficult to read message in the jumble of the recovery menu.Quote:"One or more of the mounts listed in etc/fstab cannot be mounted. Swap: waiting for UUID=35b77xxxxxx"Any ideas? I'm not sure how to troubleshoot the problem, or what steps to take to resolve it.

I had a problem with Ubuntu 10 trying to mount a non-existent directory, mount/DRIVE_F/R&RMT . It would post an error message, wait for acknowledgement (or timeout).
The only cure for this incredible annoyance was to manually create the missing directory and path.
This works, EXCEPT THAT now instead of the (Gnome) desktop coming up, the empty directory I created comes up, and I have to close or minimize it.
I can't find where in the boot process the command to mount this occurs.
I need a clear explanation of the complete boot process from cold boot to Gnome GUI exposition.

I have set up an NFS server on Fedora 13, and I am connecting to it with Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 10.
On both clients the command
Code:
works fine. On Fedora I can get into the directory with Nautilus and have read/write permissions as specified in /etc/exports on the server, but on Ubuntu I can only get into it from a sudo'd command line.
The ownership of the file on Fedora is "nobody" and on Ubuntu it's "user #500", with only people in the "500" group having access to it.
Obviously the permissions can't be changed on the client, but with the Fedora box being able to read/write to it with no problems I'm not sure what else I can do on the server to let normal users on the Ubuntu box read it.

I am curious if mounting a directory inside an already mounted directory is considered safe? I have done this on an Ubuntu server before but never thought to ask if it could cause problems. An example:
/dev/mapper/Raid5-VMStorage on /var/lib/libvirt/images
/dev/mapper/Raid1-SpareStorage on /var/lib/libvirt/images/Workstations

I have noticed that when I have my home directory mounted over network with NFSv4 ==> applications that use dconf to save preferences do not work correctly.
If I try to save preferences they won't save and I'm getting "Unable to contact dconf service" errors with Evince, Empathy etc.
I was googling this issue and I figured out that Dconf uses inotify() ( [url] and [url]) and those notifys don't work with NFS at all so the whole "dconf thing" doesn't work!
Am I right that Ubuntu is moving from GConf to DConf? If that is true I think this issue will be a serious problem if most of the applications use mechanism to save settings that doesn't work with NFS mounted drives. It is quite common to use NFS to mount home directory in some schools, companies and LTSP-machines.
I've tried to reinstall dconf and libdconf0 packages with no working result. When I'm using my home directory locally there is no problems.
And with Ubuntu 10.04/9.10/9.04... there were no these problems.

I have multiple ubuntu machines and I connect to one through an NFS share. I have done this for a few years without issue. However, since re-installing ubuntu and upgrading to 10.4 I have a problem with my system hanging when the remote shares are lost.
Basically, I can power down the machine downstairs, and my main machine then has a fit. I can not open any folders in ubuntu, nor can I shut down. If I try and shut down the system hangs, last time it hung for 8 hours before I had to kill the power.
These are the lines in my fstab
I don't know what I've done wrong, or how I can prevent this from hanging. I have googled the heck out of this as well and can't seem to find an answer either.

I have this problem with my Canon powershot A630. I connected it to the computer via USB. Ubuntu detects it, ask me if i want to use nautilus or f-spot to see the pictures in the SD card (it says that there are photgraphs in the media), so i go for "open folder" option, and the window shows up totally empty. Te only file i see in the card is ".fir" extension wich i use for upgrading the camera firmware. I know there are pictures in the sd card because i can see them using the camera.

I have a Buffalo Drivestation (model HD-CELU2, 1tb) attached to my network. From my ubuntu desktop I can go to the menu, select "connect to server", put in the ip and share info, and it mounts perfectly.I can open the share and browse eadwrite, but when I try to mount it from a terminal or within fstab, it will still mount, but I cannot see any files that are on the drive. I have about 12gb of data on it, but like I said when I mount it using "mount -t cifs 192.x.x.x/share blah blah blah" I do not see any of the files. If I do a df I can see that the drive has files on it based on the free space available, but if I do an ls nothing shows.

How would i go about copying files to a directory, yet skip the files that already exist in the directory, and also remove the files that are in the directory. For example:
Code:
$ls /dir1
img001.jpg
img002.jpg
[code]....
Now i would like to copy from dir1 to dir2, but the contents of dir2 would be:
Code:
$ls /dir2

I have 3 disks in my PC which are partitioned equally as I use them for Raid 1.The first partition on every disk is a simple ext2 partition for booting. No Raid there. So I mount them as /boot and /boot2 and /boot3. So I can backup my /boot to the other boot directories. That worked for some month and this morning I just want to look if all directories have enough free space left. So I did a df -h and got this:
Code:
Dateisystem Grove Benut Verf Ben% Eingehängt auf
/dev/mapper/system-root
6,0G 301M 5,4G 6% /
udev 1,5G 292K 1,5G 1% /dev
/dev/sdb1 122M 29M 87M 25% /boot
/dev/sdc1 38M 21M 16M 59% /boot2
...
/dev/sda1 122M 29M 87M 25% /boot
As you can see /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 are both mounted on /boot
Here is what mount says:
Code:
/dev/sdb1 on /boot type ext2 (ro,acl,user_xattr)
/dev/sdc1 on /boot2 type ext2 (ro,acl,user_xattr)
...
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (ro,acl,user_xattr)
This is no Problem for me as I could just remount it correctly, but I would like to know if this problem is known. I did not change anything by now and this PC is a server which is running 24/7, so I can deliver more debugging Information if someone is interested.

I wanted to set ACL for a directory. For that it is important that the device should be mounted as acl on that directory.
But I do not want to add the acl mount in /etc/fstab. So I am tempoararily mounting the device to some temporary directory as acl and setting ACL and then unmounting it. Then, I'm mounting it to the original directory.
The code is below:
tmp="/tmp1/backup"
orig="/mnt1/backup"
dev="/dev/sda2"
mkdir -p $tmp
[Code]....
The group is being changed, but ACL is not set for the directory.

When I mount the host directory on the VM, I am not able to change the ownership/permissions through the VM no matter what. The ownership is set to "nobody" and I can't even change it to root.

I'm running Fedora 12 - Linux 2.6.32.21 with a boot partion on /dev/sdb3 of a hard disk.
I downloaded a vanilla kernel version 2.6.35.4 and have built it and run it successfully. I built this kernel to play with building device drivers.
My grub configuration uses the same root filesystem for my fedora installation as my vanilla 2.6.35.4 kernel; both use the LVM root filesystem. (/dev/sd4 /dev/sdb5 /dev/sdb6)
When I'm running fedora 12 (2.6.32.21) I can see the files in /boot which contains my kernel, system-map, initramfs, grub directory, etc. I also see my vanilla kernel 2.6.35.4 and it's associated support files (map, initramfs, etc.)
My question is when I boot into my vanilla 2.6.35.4 kernel and I look in /boot, I only see my vanilla kernel and it's associated support files. No grub, no fedora kernel. If I do a df -a, I see that /dev/sdb3 is not mounted like it is when I'm running my fedora kernel. I'm confused as to what is going on here. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I'm having trouble with an NFS mounted directory on a newly installed 5.3 server.
The directory mounts fine using this command:
However I cannot write to the directory despite it being mounted RW and having read-write access on the host (a Netapp Filer). If I check permissions on the mounted directory, I see it is owned by 'avahi-autoipd':
I have disabled the avahi-daemon in chkconfig, although it wasn't running to begin with. Any idea why this directory would be owned by avahi-autoipd and whether or not that has anything to do with why I can't write to the mounted directory?

mount an NFS directory as a regular user (which doesn't have sudo rights) because a suitable entry (i.e. with the user option) is defined in /etc/fstab file. But, when I mount it, I am not the owner of it! The owner is the default superuser of the system. So I don't have write permissions in the mounted directory.

I was nosing around in my /home folder and I noticed that the /.thumbnails directory had 38,000+ files in it. That number seem a bit excessive to me. Is there a way to limit the number of files that are allowed to be in that directory, and maybe delete the oldest files automatically when the directory reaches it's limit in order to make room for the new incoming files, so there are no "directory full" type of errors?

I am new in Linux and I need to extract alot of zipped files (different format (e.g tar.gz, tar.gz2)) which are in subdirs and I do not want to go to each subdir and extract each file because it will take alot of time. Is there away to extract all files that are existing in dirs and subdir with "for loop" or is there a script that can do the job automatically.
