General :: Installation Fail-cd Rom Now Unresponsive?
Mar 2, 2011
I had/have a dual boot Win7, Ubuntu machine and wanted to replace Ubuntu with Fedora 14. I booted from the Fedora cd and was going through the settings when the install froze (I think it was after clicking Next from the partition settings screen) and I had to do a cold shut down of the computer.
The computer now takes a long time to get to the Grub loader (timing out while looking for the cd rom I believe is what is happening) though it seems to boot fine. The problem is that the Windows OS now does not recognize the cd rom, or rather, it is present in the device manager, but will not respond via the OS (cannot be accessed via command line nor gui) nor from pushing the "Open" button on the hardware itself. It seems as if the device has been locked at some lower level.
Any idea how to 'unlock' the device? I can't boot from the cd anymore (the bios recognizes the presence of the device, but that is it) and I don't know how else to rectify the situation. I haven't tried booting to ubuntu yet (as I don't think anything was actually changed while attempting the Fedora install) but I am new enough to linux as to not know what to do if I could boot to it.

I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04, and most things appear to be fine. However, after a day or two of inactivity (apart from remotely logging in for SSH), the computer goes into a state where the screen is blank and it is unresponsive (and no longer allows access by SSH, FTP, or SVN server access). I have to reboot the computer to use it again, which I can't always do when I'm traveling. I inquired about this previously -but I'm convinced the solution may be more complicated than suggested because I don't have compiz turned on and the computer's power management is already set so that it's never supposed to sleep. I tried to install 10.04 fresh from a Live CD, but it freezes where it asks me how I want to use my partitions so I can't even reinstall

I'm writing this from the OS running off the live CD for 10.10. I'm installing this to a Dell 1501 over 2 Ghtz processor, 1.5 MB ram. I have gone through several dialogue windows and the last one is the password page. I have filled that out and below that there is the back button and foward button. The back button I could and have tried pushing. The forward button is gray and unresponsive. Under that is a progress bar. This bar has stopped. immeadiately above this, there is a text that says "Ready when you are..."

I have a really strange problem after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04:
Switching between windows has a noticeable delay.
This is true whether I'm going between two terminals, two tabs in a browser, between tabs in my chat client, or between applications entirely. It's about a 1-second delay, when previously it was an instantaneous (or nearly so) action.

When I boot fedora off a live cd i can edit some boot options just fine with my mouse & Keyboard, but when I get to the login screen I cannot use them at all.
Now a year back I had same problem with Ubuntu. I had to enter some command can't remember if it was acpi nolapic noapic or whatever. I'd like to know what to type into my boot options to fix this issue.

i wasn't sure where to post this, so if there's a better place, someone please more this thread. i just installed 10.04 64-bit desktop on a ~4 year old hp a1610n (pic below). it works great for about 20 seconds at which point the screen becomes distorted and unresponsive. i'm not entirely sure, but i think the problem didn't start until after i activated the (recommended) nvidia driver. its hard to say though since i set up that driver very soon after the install. here's a pic of the desktop: click me
here's a videos vid of what happens: watch me
if there's any other information i could provide that would be helpful, let me know.

Last week I successfully installed Ubuntu/Gnome onto a 3 year old Toshiba Vista laptop which worked mostly brilliantly. Today I am trying to install it onto a 4 year old Toshiba XP laptop, but am having problems.
Laptop specs: Intel 1.50GHz 488MB RAM 60GB HDD, partitioned by Ubuntu on install into 30GB/30GB, both partitions over 75% free space The laptop, though old, still functions in XP, and the main reason we're switching it to Linux is that it has issues managing wireless, plus it's fun to do so - learning experience and all. The other laptop has better specs - multiply everything by 2 but Windows was much less reliable as, after all, it is Vista, and switching to Linux there was a necessity.
The Ubuntu is 10.10 and it's the same live cd I used to install it onto the other laptop. It's installed alongside Windows XP and the install proceeded without issue. However when booting in normal mode it becomes unresponsive very quickly - sometimes as soon as the five pips on the loading screen become orange, the last time it lasted a whole 2 minutes before becoming unresponsive.
In failsafe graphics boot it runs without issue. The update manager tells me it's up to date, and I have installed Wine through SPM while typing this. It's behaving as I'd expect it to, with tiny lags on scrolling sometimes (perhaps related to being in failsafe graphics).
Is there some setting (graphics?) I should change to allow it to cope in normal mode? I'm aware 488MB RAM is slightly under the recommended amount, but it evidently can cope in failsafe so would appear to be enough to function?

After I have upgraded from 10.10 to 11.4 I have a very strange problem. My desktop seems to be unresponsitve to mouse right or left clicks. The file browser only starts if I use thunar. Nautilus will not run at all. I am not sure if they are tied together but everytime I reboot i get the error message the file browser is still open. If my iphone is plugged in i get a metacity error. I am booting into classic with no effects. I can work kinda but mostly starting everything from inside a terminal. Also Nautilus only will run if I start it under sudo...

My name is Mayan Viljoen & I am from South Africa. I am very new with Ubuntu and I don't understand why the Vodafone 3G modem HSDPA USB stick (model k3570-Z) which I recently bought should not like Ubuntu as much as it does Windows. I want to work on the Ubuntu side of my split hard drive rather than the Windows side. It is notoriously difficult to get connected to the net on the new Ubuntu with this 3G modem. Is it because it is really manufactured for Windows or is there another reason? It will only really connect approx. 1 out of approx. 8 odd times on the Ubuntu 10.8 Operating System, which is very annoying to me. What can be the reason for this? If it is that this modem was really made for Windows, what then is the best 3G modem and network to use with Ubuntu 10.8?

I made my HP DV6000 into a single boot system. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, 64bit. I have been trying every cure I can find on the internet. I can seem to find the problem. My monitor show's everything on the screen as it's booting but then, when it's done, it goes blank and no keys/buttons work. I have it on the GNU GRUB screen right now. (The monitor is working fine (on this screen)

I just finishing burning ubuntu on my laptop and was getting ready to partition my disk to allow space for ubuntu. I restarted my computer and when it was restarting ubuntu logo came up (as it booted from the disc). I was not wanting to install it at this moment so i was waiting for it to load then cancel it(just like a windows installation). It then froze and became pixelated with green and white colours.I thought it was nothing maybe just an error in teh disc. I waited 5-10 minutes then held the power button to shut it off. I then went to settings in the bios and changed it to boot from hdd first. After restart, windows began to load for like 3 seconds then blue screen. I dont know what went wrong or why this is happening.During installation of Ubuntu on my second try I keep getting:sudo: can't read /etc /sudoers: Input/Output errorsudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quittingWhat are the odds of me still having my windows 7 data?and could Hiren's boot cd help?

I just downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu and went to install it on a Pentium 4 desktop that previously had XP on it. I get the main setup screen where it allows you several options including installation. Once I select installation, it appears to be installing but then comes up with a message that includes the following: "removing gdm-guest-session" It will not do anything else and the machine appears to go into sleep mode. When I try to shut it down, it appears that the kernel had loaded. Any ideas why the normal installation isn't continuing?

My original intention was to install a distribution of Ubuntu onto an external hard drive so i can use it on different computers. I first downloaded and burned a copy of Ubuntu 10.10 and booted my Acer laptop to it. I then plugged in my external hard drive and tried to install ubuntu onto it by partitioning the external hard drive. After I did that, I booted from the external hard drive on my laptop and it ran the new distribution i created. However, when I tried to boot it from a different computer it said something like "partition not found." So the next time I tried to install ubuntu onto the external hard drive with out partitioning it, using the entire drive. This is what started to cause problems.
Now when I start up my laptop without the external hard drive plugged in i get "error: no such device: xxxx..... grub rescue>. When I start it up with the hard drive plugged in a grub comes up with the new installation, my old ubuntu installation, and my old windows vista.

When I install NVIDIA Driver 9500GT on my Fedora 13 (64 bits), they ask me to install "gcc" package. And the "gcc" package itself needs more dependencies. I managed to install all of those dependencies, except "libc.so.6"
I couldn't find the "libc.so.6" on internet. It looks like the "libc.so.6" and "Glibc" package the same or what?

Fail the upgrading...
Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'update-manager-kde' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

I recently got a shiny new msi notebook and I decided I wanted to dual-boot Linux on it (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit). I started with Ubuntu, when that failed (the GUI wouldn't install properly) I tried Mint. It worked fine, but for some reason, I hate Mint. I deleted the Mint partitions and attempted to claim back the free space in a new partition for Windows 7. For some unbeknownst reason, it failed. Since I didn't desparately need the hard drive space, I said "screw it" and went about my day.
After seeing a friend using Fedora, I figured "why not?" So I downloaded F14 and burned it to a disc and booted it. All went well so I tried installing it. The install process went normal until I reached this screen: I press "Next", and I get this: (Full text here) I start to think that anaconda has something to do with my hard drive partitions, so I open Logical Volume Manager.
Partition 1 is a recovery partition (12 GB).
Partition 2, I have no idea, but it's only .1 GB.
Partition 3 is the Windows 7 partition (172.29 GB).
Partition 4 is 113.20 GB.
Unpartitioned space is 113.20 GB.
I know this can't be right, because my hard drive is only 320 GB (and those GB aren't even "real" GB) and the partitions add up to 410.79 GB. I'm thinking that Partition 4 and Unpartitioned space are the same thing, and the existence of the Partition 4 record is the aftermath of the failure to reclaim the disk space for Windows. So how do I go about fixing this (getting rid of Partition 4 or finding a work-around)?

I have a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 and also two dual boot desktop machines, both running Windows XP and Ubuntu. I have upgraded one of the desktops to Ubuntu 10.04 and since doing so Thunderbird will not run on the laptop or the desktop. On clicking the launcher there are signs of activity for a few seconds and then they stop and Thunderbird fails to open. Also there is no longer any sound on the desktop that I have upgraded. I am reluctant now to upgrade the remaining desktop in case I have the same problems
how to get Thunderbird running again, please. I have already spent a week unsuccessfully trying to get the sound working and have abandoned it, but I would like Thunderbird to start running again.

looks like everything upgraded like the other upgrades I did on a couple other machines this weekend, but upon reboot, I get a mouse pointer (inop) and the little 'drum beat' audio file plays, and it goes into a loop (blank screen, pointer, audio...(repeat)...)
upgraded from 9.10 (both old and new versions are the x64 version) (my successful upgrades to 10.04 were on both x86 and x64 versions)
Lenovo T400
dual boot w/ xp (grub seems to work just fine)
I checked the menu.lst (~) for proper kernel versions as mentioned in another post, and they looked correct to me.
