Thing is, grub didn't install! I'm pretty sure a full install of ubuntu 10.10 in on a partition that I can't access. To complicate matters further, loading Vista necessitated a restart when it installed a "generic volume driver" by itself. Restarting vista doesn't show any difference (obviously since vista can't see linux formatted partitions).
I got a laptop for free. It's an old POS, but it was free, and it basically works for pretty much what I am going to use it for. Web Browsing, Cloud Computing type stuff.NOTE: I am an extreme Google Whore. To paraphrase Jay-Z: Google Mail, Google Docs, all Google Everything. lol. when considering my question, please keep this in mind.anyhow, this is what I am working with:

as I mentioned above, I use Google Stuff for my primary computing Needs. GMail, Google Docs for Office stuff, Reader for RSS, etc. with Google Gears to make these apps usable offline. I also use LastFM, Twitter, etc. My preferred browser is Chrome, but I can settle for Firefox if necessary. I am trying to figure out if getting off of Windows XP, and switching to Linux might help with boosting the performance of this old, crappy machine(does the OS even matter in regards to this?), and maybe push it more towards being more of a Cloud Computing machine. and which Distro would probably be best for me and my computer.
I know absolutely nothing about Linux beyond common, basic stuff. So anything that requires some complex set up is not what I am looking for. I'd also need a decently easy to use GUI. But I am unsure about hardware compatibility and things like that. I don't wanna wipe my HD, and break the computer trying to install Linux,
Atlast after a long time thinking and concerns I made it ... installed F12 on HP Pavilion using a LIVE CD ... I got a AMD turion 64 X2 with a NVIDIA graphics card (7200M this is what it says in VISTA) I am more than satisfied with F12 on my HP ... this is first time I am using Linux on LAPTOP and my previous usage is purely on desktops and have some good touch with F9 and still continuing with it. I have few doubts At present I guess I am using Nouveau drivers for my Nvidia graphics card. But I hear from communities people complaining of HIGH TEMPERATURES as open source drivers for NVIDIA are not good enough (NVIDIA doesnt release much info on them). So should I change my NVIDIA drivers to proprietary one? Any tips or gnome settings on LAPTOPS to best utilize all the resources without burning out things?

I have RHEL 6 installed on my laptop, but when I try to install Suse Linux after hitting installtion button it starts loading lernel but then it blacks out and stays there for years.
It also shows some ACPI error when I tried to install second LINUX OS .
3.What should I do? Should I change my newly brought laptop?
My HP Pavilion laptop (3GB RAM, 1.8GHz, Intel Core2 Duo, Integrated graphics) has been freezing almost every single time I log in. This used to happen occasionally. Recently I had to clear my whole drive and reinstall Ubuntu (now using maverick) because it stopped working. Now when I log in and it freezes the only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I've probably done this way too many times by now and it can't be good for the computer.
To get around this I do the following: Safe mode works perfectly fine and I use it to disable compiz. Then I log back out and log in to the normal desktop and it works fine. Then I re-enable compiz and everything is fine. So compiz itself seems to not be the problem? Maybe it has something to do with how it is being called right after log in?I could try to live without compiz or just disable it every time I log out but that's a hassle.
I've been trying to boot an HP laptop (dv6-6135) with AMD APU A8-3500 from a F15 liveUSB. The machine gives an error message after trying to boot (the message is simplified):

It does not matter if I try the x86 or the x86_64 version. What can I do to avoid this error and allow Linux to boot in the aforementioned laptop? I am sure the CPU with built-in graphics are to blame here, but a kernel parameter would solve the problem.
I decided to download Ubuntu 9.10. I am just having a problem finding a wireless network. When I click on the icon it does not show any network. It says device not ready under wireless network. Once again I have an HP pavilion dv2500 laptop.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with the suspend button (fn+f5) on my hp pavilion dv2000 laptop. It is working but only after an intervention. So, every I boot up my system the short-cut/button is not functioning. In order to make it work I have to open the Power Management Preferences and close them. I don't even need to change anything there. Now the button will be working just fine until the next restart. It's pretty annoying to visit the Power Management after each restart, isn't it. Any ideas how could I fix this?

I'm running it in parallel with windows xp and the wifi works find on windows (as it has always done) but once I boot the laptop in ubuntu, it doesn't recognise anything, no driver, nothing.

I create a Ubuntu boot disk 11.4 and selected Install all I got was a little white box near the bottom right of the screen. I got a new hard drive and wanted to try the linux operating system. With the boot disk the computer does boot from the cdrom drive, but I can't get it to install. After hitting forward on the screen preparing to install ubuntu the screen it says installing and gets stuck at that point. Booted from cdrom got as far as the "Who are you?"screen then the screen went blank but I can still see hard drive activity. Is it formating the drive?

It's positioned in such a way that makes my thumb hit it all the time by accident while typing, and it's been a total nightmare. I would just like to disable the scroll wheel feature on this mousepad entirely, but I would like to do so in such a way that I can still use the scroll wheel on my USB mouse whenever I have that plugged in.

HDMI video out is fine, HDMI audio is a no go.
I tried to do a clean install of 10.04 on the above desktop. It was previously running 9.10 fine.
I booted with a 10.04 live CD, used Gparted to delete the previous partition that 9.10 was in. Installed 10.04 and chose the option to install in the largest continuous free disc space.
The installation seemed to go fine, but when I re-start the system, GRUB loads, I select Linux, then I get a flashing cursor and the monitor goes to sleep as it shows like it is getting no signal.
When I boot Vista on the same system it works fine.
From the sound of the hard drive, I am guessing that it is not loading the Ubuntu OS, I don't think this is a video driver problem.
today i've installed kubuntu with wubi for windows 7 on my hp pavilion dv6 with processor Intel Core i7 Q720 @1.60GHz with 4 Gb of RAM @ 64bit with NVIDIA Geforce GT 230M but i've had some problems.Infact the system continued to freeze after some minutes due to overheating so i restarted the computer and the Bios told me that to prevent damage to internal components the computer has been freezed. I repeated the process and i checked out the temperature with the desktop widget and it actually reached after some minutes 80-85� C so i cleaned the computer and the temperature turned back to normal (50-60�C) but the problem continued to exist! After several minutes the computer freezed again and the BIOS told me the same things he told me before (90� and computer freezed due to prevent damage for overheating).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install, replacing 11.3 with 11.4 (BTW, why couldn't 11.4 recognize a ext4 partition??). When I boot, the cursor is a garbage block in the center of the screen. When I move, the cursor disappears. The display never progresses past the splash and no progress bar appears. When I boot in safemode, it works, but the display is slow and jerky. This is such a show stopper for me that I had to revert to 11.3 which does not like my touchpad.

View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently I tried to install openSUSE 11.2 on my HP Pavilion dv6-2125tx notebook PC which comes preloaded with Windows7. I used a DVD to install the openSUSE. Before installation, I created partitions on my hard drive for root, /home and swap by shrinking the C volume. This is the only way to create partitions on my laptop. I used NTFS filesystem during format of these partitions. During installation, the first error message that appeared was YaST error saying that it could not format the partitions though it was allowing me to set mount points and filesystems for the partitions I had created. The next problem was swap. I was not able to see the mount point and F (for format) for the swap partition. However when I continued by ignoring the warning for swap there was a partition for swap and it was the same partition I wanted to have for swap. So, I clicked the Install button. The next problem was grub error 17: cannot mount the partition. And then when I continued ignoring this too, the computer did not get any of the OSes saying that BOOTMGR (BOOT MANAGER) is missing. I had no options left but to recover it using recovery disks of my laptop.I searched a bit on the internet and found that grub error 17 happens if the corresponding partition exists but the filesystem is not recognized by the GRUB.
I concluded that it was happening bacause YaST was unable to format any of partitions with the filesystem selected. So in my next attempt, I formatted the partitions in FAT32 filesystem in Windows which I think GRUB can recognize. I did that because even if YAST would be unable to format the partition the filesystem could be recognized by GRUB.And I think that happened but I got a new error this time.The grub error 22.Now I don't know what to do. One thing that I am expecting is that my hard drive cannot be partitioned in the correct way for linux. I can only shrink the volume and create logical partitions only from one dynamic partition c. And that may be the reason YaST could not format the partitions in the correct filesystem and inturn the grub error is happening.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop, a rather new HP Pavilion dv6-2044el. Windows 7 is already installed, so I've tried "installation inside Windows". I have been using Ubuntu for at least a couple of years, and this is the first time there is no way to complete an installation : The process halts after restarting the system. A few months ago I managed to install Ubuntu 9.10 on this laptop without any trouble, before disinstalling it. I have tried:
ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso both from a CD and an USB flash drive, always with the same frustrating result. I tried also to install 9.10 first and then upgrade to 10.4, but the upgrade didn't work either. Today I even tried Maverick Meerkat (maverick-desktop-i386.iso) from a USB flash drive, but it also halted during the process. Whenever I try to install 10.4 on my daughter's HP Pavilion dv6000 the installation screens show up as stripes, three of them, on the page.I don't ever see a full screen so I can't run the install. I've tried the 32bit, the 64 bit, and the dual boot for Windows options.
