Ubuntu :: HP Pavilion Laptop Freezing After Login
Dec 26, 2010
My HP Pavilion laptop (3GB RAM, 1.8GHz, Intel Core2 Duo, Integrated graphics) has been freezing almost every single time I log in. This used to happen occasionally. Recently I had to clear my whole drive and reinstall Ubuntu (now using maverick) because it stopped working. Now when I log in and it freezes the only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I've probably done this way too many times by now and it can't be good for the computer.
To get around this I do the following: Safe mode works perfectly fine and I use it to disable compiz. Then I log back out and log in to the normal desktop and it works fine. Then I re-enable compiz and everything is fine. So compiz itself seems to not be the problem? Maybe it has something to do with how it is being called right after log in?I could try to live without compiz or just disable it every time I log out but that's a hassle.

Before I go 100% ubuntu I need a few things. How can I make so if my headphones are plugged in that sound doesn't come out of my speakers? I got a HP Pavilion DV7-3065dx laptop.
Is there a TextExpander for ubuntu? I need to make it so if I hit my left and right mouse button at the same time a middle click is simulated.

Atlast after a long time thinking and concerns I made it ... installed F12 on HP Pavilion using a LIVE CD ... I got a AMD turion 64 X2 with a NVIDIA graphics card (7200M this is what it says in VISTA) I am more than satisfied with F12 on my HP ... this is first time I am using Linux on LAPTOP and my previous usage is purely on desktops and have some good touch with F9 and still continuing with it. I have few doubts At present I guess I am using Nouveau drivers for my Nvidia graphics card. But I hear from communities people complaining of HIGH TEMPERATURES as open source drivers for NVIDIA are not good enough (NVIDIA doesnt release much info on them). So should I change my NVIDIA drivers to proprietary one? Any tips or gnome settings on LAPTOPS to best utilize all the resources without burning out things?

I have a problem with the suspend button (fn+f5) on my hp pavilion dv2000 laptop. It is working but only after an intervention. So, every I boot up my system the short-cut/button is not functioning. In order to make it work I have to open the Power Management Preferences and close them. I don't even need to change anything there. Now the button will be working just fine until the next restart. It's pretty annoying to visit the Power Management after each restart, isn't it. Any ideas how could I fix this?

I downloaded ubuntu 11.04 on my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop and the wifi on it doesn't work. I'm running it in parallel with windows xp and the wifi works find on windows (as it has always done) but once I boot the laptop in ubuntu, it doesn't recognise anything, no driver, nothing.
get the wifi working in ubuntu on my laptop. Ubuntu is pretty much useless to me if I can't get the wifi to work on it.

I've been trying to boot an HP laptop (dv6-6135) with AMD APU A8-3500 from a F15 liveUSB. The machine gives an error message after trying to boot (the message is simplified):
Code:
... address space collision: host bridge window
[..] conflicts with Video ROM [..]
ACPI: [Package] has zero elements (..)
It does not matter if I try the x86 or the x86_64 version. What can I do to avoid this error and allow Linux to boot in the aforementioned laptop? I am sure the CPU with built-in graphics are to blame here, but a kernel parameter would solve the problem.

I got a laptop for free. It's an old POS, but it was free, and it basically works for pretty much what I am going to use it for. Web Browsing, Cloud Computing type stuff.NOTE: I am an extreme Google Whore. To paraphrase Jay-Z: Google Mail, Google Docs, all Google Everything. lol. when considering my question, please keep this in mind.anyhow, this is what I am working with:
HP Pavilion zt1130
Windows XP SP3
Intel Celeron Processor 1133MHz
684MB RAM
S3 Graphics Twister 16MB
20GB Hard Drive
DirectX 9.0c
Linksys Wireless-G Network Adapter
as I mentioned above, I use Google Stuff for my primary computing Needs. GMail, Google Docs for Office stuff, Reader for RSS, etc. with Google Gears to make these apps usable offline. I also use LastFM, Twitter, etc. My preferred browser is Chrome, but I can settle for Firefox if necessary. I am trying to figure out if getting off of Windows XP, and switching to Linux might help with boosting the performance of this old, crappy machine(does the OS even matter in regards to this?), and maybe push it more towards being more of a Cloud Computing machine. and which Distro would probably be best for me and my computer.
I know absolutely nothing about Linux beyond common, basic stuff. So anything that requires some complex set up is not what I am looking for. I'd also need a decently easy to use GUI. But I am unsure about hardware compatibility and things like that. I don't wanna wipe my HD, and break the computer trying to install Linux,

Installing Ubuntu on the laptop said it succeeded and required a restart, then before shutting down and after the cd popped out a string of
end_request: I/O error dev sr0, sector 2xxxxxx...
end_request: I/O error dev sr0, sector
end_request: I/O error dev sr0, sector
Thing is, grub didn't install! I'm pretty sure a full install of ubuntu 10.10 in on a partition that I can't access. To complicate matters further, loading Vista necessitated a restart when it installed a "generic volume driver" by itself. Restarting vista doesn't show any difference (obviously since vista can't see linux formatted partitions).

I have a HP Pavilion Dv71245dx Laptop running Debian Wheezy, which has been alright so far except for the mouse wheel built into the right side of the touch mousepad. It's positioned in such a way that makes my thumb hit it all the time by accident while typing, and it's been a total nightmare. I would just like to disable the scroll wheel feature on this mousepad entirely, but I would like to do so in such a way that I can still use the scroll wheel on my USB mouse whenever I have that plugged in.

I have a Dell Inspiron mini 10'1". When I close it and reopen it, it almost always freezes. I can't do anything, ctrl alt delete doesn't work, pushing the button doesn't activate it either (I mean Turn on/off button). I have to hold shut down button so it would turn off, I lose everything I was working with, and simply have to start it again. I'm using Windows XP SP3 home edition.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. My computer (IBM Thinkpad R40) is freezing whenever I turn it on. Once it gets to the login, the mouse and keys don't work. I don't know if this is an Ubuntu problem or a problem with my laptop. Does anyone know how to fix this? Do I need to upgrade my RAM (I have half a gig RAM; I have a lot on my laptop, so maybe I need to make it a full gig?).

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 series card. I need proper OpenGL support, so it appears I need the fglrx driver. After I install it, I experience very odd freezes related to the power cable:
- It freezes if I rapidly take the plug in and out a few times
- It freezes if I run on battery power for a random amount of time between 10 and 20 minutes. This happens if I boot up on battery power, or if I take out the plug while it's on (assuming the first kind of freeze doesn't happen)
EDIT: I have changed absolutely nothing about the drivers, but now those specific freezes don't happen. Instead, I just got a random freeze, while the power cable was in and not being touched.

I loaded Fedora 10 onto my Lenovo T60 last week. everyday i boot it up and it works fine for a few minutes, then freezes. to the point of powering off. my mouse still works but nothing else. i power back up and it generally stays up after that.
Before i had Fedora i was useing PCLinux 2009 and it worked just fine. i get a kernel error alert every once in a while. i finally submitted it to Fedora to be reported. also a flash plugin says it is needed at times but most media plays.
Is there something i'm missing here? like i need to add an additional update? i already updated/installed most Fedora 10 updates.

Diagnosis: I'm running Ubuntun 10.04. It has been running smoothly for pleny of time (8~9 months). I've done the clean install (not upgrading).
One day I left the screen locked and when I returned it was frozen. I restarted and it froze in the login screen (sometimes when I restart it actually log in my account, but freezes right after some minutes). The mouse pointer still moves.
I still can log in remotely through SSH, even though the system is frozen. So I suspect it has to do with the GUI.
Here's the output of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log
I think the error started in here:
Code:
(WW) Jan 21 11:29:46 NVIDIA(0): WAIT
(2, 6, 0x8000, 0x00007b6c, 0x0000aa04)

I have a Toshiba laptop that seems to be freezing on extended operations involving the file system/hard drive. (that's kind of a guess on my part). The system has frozen during the last day or two when I:
- try a large file operation with Nautilus
- try exporting a large video file from Kdenlive
- try formatting the disk for a new install of Maverick (I decided that with the new version almost out, I might try upgrading in case I broke my system)
What I see is the screen freezing and the mouse does not move. As I said, I tried installing the Maverick RC from the Alternate CD (I wanted to do a minimal install). The install hung on the partitioning step and the caps-lock key started blinking (though I don't get this in other cases). I have booted into my Lucid live-cd and a Puppy live-cd to try Gparted, with the same results - the system freezes (but the caps-lock key doesn't blink). Puppy HAS performed better generally, for example I was able to complete my large file operation (backing things up!) but it is freezing on the partitioning step.

My alienware laptop doesn't boot sometimes to the login screen. It doesn't move on from kubuntu screen (the one with the animated dots). This happens only sometimes. When this happens if I press the power button once, the dots start moving and machine shuts down. I also have a nvidia card and don't know if the bug has been sorted where it doesn't show proper resolution during the kubuntu dots screen.

My FC12 laptop won't boot. During the attempted boot, after blue/white progress bars finish displaying on the bottom of screen, nothing more seems to happen. The screen isn't totally blank in that I seem to have a text cursor and keyboard input is displayed. But, no prompt, no login prompt, X isn't running, etc. If I hit ESCduring boot, it displays the boot messages and the boot sequence stops after "Starting atd". I'm not sure if it's related, but I had previously experimented with creating a new xorg.conf file by running "Xorg -configure' and was testing the new file with "X -?? /etc/x11/xorg.conf.new" (I forget what the -?? option was). I assumed that this would not overwrite the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file and that if I ran into problems, that the original xorg.conf would be in place. how I can get this miserable thing to boot?
