View 6 Replies View RelatedI`ve triple checked this and every time I run compiz any window opened has no minimise maximize or any other buttons for some reason but I don`t know why.If I exit compiz from the icon there are still no window buttons until I log out and then back in again. I can`t find this mentioned elsewhere but it`s happening every time in Squeeze AMD64 fresh installation having only downloaded AWN and compiz (tried this without AWN running and same result). It seems to have a drawing issue as if I run AWN then only three icons can show up on the dock any others are just thin white lines but I have no idea why my buttons dissappear. Anyone able to enlighten me?EDIT: Well I realised that by default the window decorations bit was not enabled, enabling it solves the first issue so the white lines instead of icons in AWN can`t be related so will look into that seperately.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.
I know to start emacs with no window system, I do:
emacs -nw filename.txt
But, I don't want to specify -nw constantly. What do I add in my .emacs to do this automatically?
I'm having some difficulty to confgure the windows X manager...
I can't find /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I'm trying to do this in opensuse 11.1 and fedora 12
I tried to install in fedora yum install system-config-display but I think that isn't the best thing to do...
And can anyone tell me a distribution that use XFree 86.4.4.x?
Opense suse, Fedora and Ubuntu use X.org-X11 isn't it?
I am setting up a thin client boot (over NFS) with x2go thinclient. So far everything works, the client boots over PXE, mounts the NFS dir on the server. But the x2go thinclient system does not install properly. I end up with a CLI prompt, to log in. It does not start X, not does it start the x2go client in a window managerless X session.
X2go is, in case you don't know it yet, a cool Linux X terminal session system, very much like Nomachines NXserver. I like it very much, since my experience, especially with freenx has not been good.
Now I am missing some Linux knowhow here: I know that after startup (the CLI part), the display manager is started (GDM or KDM), which starts the X server and shows the graphical login. Now since X2go does not properly setup and there is no documentation about the thinclient part, I will set it up myself.
I need the system to boot up, startx and then immediately start an X program (x2goclient), without having to log in before.
I found that putting a .xsession file in to the users home dir causes that script to be run when you invoke startx. But when I put startx in a script that runs as the last one in the runlevel (as in S05startx), it does not run at all.
What is the proper way to run X and a program on it directly, right at startup?
I have a ubuntu 11.04 system and a lappy with window 7 system on it.I have got samba set up on the ubuntu system so that file sharing is enable between them. However, when I put my files in my samba share and access it from the window 7 laptop.I got some errors as per attach files.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 14. I'm running a Athlon X2 with 4gb memory and nVidia 8400. I'm using the nvidia drivers ver 260. I'm running KDE 4.6. I've disabled desktop effects (when turnt on they work a charm, performance issues are the same either way). If I open any more than a few applications at once, the system grinds to a halt. even working with Kwrite is painful and it can take several seconds just to move the cursor, browsing the file is almost impossible.
When I have even 7 windows open X goes into a frenzy and sticks around 90% cpu usage. Even with no windows open if I move my mouse between screens X cpu usage stays between 50% and 90%. The system is unbearably slow. i have a XP Pro system with the same spec, lower GPU and I have no problems having 2/3 Visual Studios open, Photoshop, a few skype windows, Eclipse and the android emulator the system remains responsive but with this Linux box I can't even do basic stuff in Kwrite without it grinding to a haltJust.
I have recently just bought a laptop with window 7 starter in it. I have 2 system at home running ubuntu 10.04 LTS and 11.04. How do I share the files between the window system and ubuntu system?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have migrtaed from Arch, my first experience with linux for the past 2 months, to Debian and i'm currently setting up my system. I have a X61s Thinkpad with a cracked screen which i use with the ultrabase with an external monitor and keyboard. The monitor requires me to use fbset on console and xrandr for a graphical enviroment Whilst i was using Arch i used 'startx' to access openbox and placed my xrandr configuration in ~/.xinitrc but with debian i have wanted to use a login manager, Slim.
Because i am using KMS for my intel based system i don't have an xorg.conf and because i am using slim i am not using ~/.xinitrc I read somwhere that creating an ~/.xprofile file would solve this but i have not had any luck. So i am wondering where would be the best place to put the xrandr configuration?
I've been looking for a way to run windows-only vst plugins nativley on linux as well as to find a linux driver for my 1394 audio interface with little luck; I would like to do so without relying on wine, and have come across an idea to work out after stumbling on a utility that converts dll to lib (called dll2lib). The idea would be to convert the dll's for a proprietary fw audio dev and dependent MS libraries and manually change what's needed to make it compatible with linux env. is this possible; will I be able to achieve source code from this? if not, what is the primary point of converting a dll to lib in the first place.

I have a program that has a GUI which I have placed in /usr/local/bin however when I invoke the program I receive the following error:
Unable to find a supported JDK or JRE version. Version 1.3.1 or higher is required. Check your installation and use +javahome to specify the JDK or JRE location
I have since installed Java into the usr/local/ directory however I am now just totally Lost! Additionally, I believe that i have tried to install Java several times with no luck.
Questions:
1) Where should java be installed to have system wide access to all programs?
2) How can I place the Java location in my $PATH? here I am going to need very easy and detailed instructions?
3) Is there a way to ensure that the location where I intall java gets updates?
Using a python script, I am gathering various info about all the ethernet adapters installed. For this I am parsing all the directories(each directory represent a ethernet adapter) inside"/sys/class/net/" directory. Is this is the correct place and de-facto standard for listing ethernet adapters?I am concerned about modern distros as well as a bit older ones for the presence of this directory.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm an old-school dinosaur, and I'd like to understand how drag and drop works on the X window system under Linux. Is it build into the X protocol? Is it a function of the window manager? Do applications have to be aware of drag and drop? Is it both the applications and the window manager?I'm looking for a general technical understanding. If I have specific questions about how to modify an app to support drag and drop, I'll ask them over on Stackoverflow.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.

i would like to find and backup all *.mp4 files from /Pictures and its sub-directories and move them to a single directory on a remote. I can find and move the files but I don't want the directory structure...just the files to be placed in the remote directory.
To find my files I use
rsync -r -a -v -e "ssh -l user" --delete --include '*/' --include '*.mp4' --exclude '*' /home/drew/Pictures/ remoteserver:/Users/drew/mp4
but this creates all the subdirectories
I also tried
find ~/Pictures -name "*.mp4" -exec rsync -r -a -v -e "ssh -l user" --delete {} remote:/Users/drew/mp4 ;
This works but takes forever

I have a ZTE MF112 mobile broadband modem, which comes with Windows drivers and software. This software allows not only connect to Internet, but also send SMS and place calls (as in you dial number in program and when you're connected, sound goes through the sound card). As far as I know, almost any USB mobile modem comes with application to send SMS via its GSM connection. Now the question is - is there any vendor-independent software that runs under Linux and allows you to use your mobile broadband modem to turn your PC into larger mobile phone? I want at least to be able to send and receive SMS using PC + mobile modem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.
I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.
A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.
I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.
I am having a problem with sendmail. Using a php script the process that 30 seconds to send. I have googled the symptoms and have changed sendmail.cf ==> Timeout.ident=0 and configured /etc/hosts properly. I'm using Fedora 11 and 12, same issue.
