So basically just a shell script that updates your packages. NOW, my question. I made another shell script that makse a bit of a menu and asks what you wanna do, 1 to UPDATE or 2, to CLOSE. How do I make it so when they enter 1 it runs my update.sh ?

May 4, 2011I am just starting to learn Linux and am interested in a career in Linux. Actually I wanna go for RHCE, which is the first step for Sys Admin..right?? Basically I do NOT want to go into programming/developing as I don't feel it's my cup of tea (and also may be it sort of boggles me). Still, from what I gather I am having confusions regarding whether I should learn any programming language for a career in Linux.
Here I am avoiding programming..and now I get to hear that Linux career uses programming..That's sort of frustrating...My friend told me I need to "master" C. Do I need to learn some programming language?? If yes, then to how much extent?

The installation went well and I was able to choose the system I wanted to work in from the menu. It worked for several months but now when I choose Ubuntu from the menu I longer get to the Ubuntu login screen.

Aug 8, 2011I have migrtaed from Arch, my first experience with linux for the past 2 months, to Debian and i'm currently setting up my system. I have a X61s Thinkpad with a cracked screen which i use with the ultrabase with an external monitor and keyboard. The monitor requires me to use fbset on console and xrandr for a graphical enviroment Whilst i was using Arch i used 'startx' to access openbox and placed my xrandr configuration in ~/.xinitrc but with debian i have wanted to use a login manager, Slim.
Because i am using KMS for my intel based system i don't have an xorg.conf and because i am using slim i am not using ~/.xinitrc I read somwhere that creating an ~/.xprofile file would solve this but i have not had any luck. So i am wondering where would be the best place to put the xrandr configuration?

After that I moved /var back to / folder and reboot but the system hangs at "Starting system logger". Uninstall and re-install sysklogd package don't make any change. What I don't understand is I can start syslogd from command line:
