I have just installed slackware 13 on an old machine I am bringing back into use. As I have a spare Linksys wmp54g card I would like to try to get the wireless networking in place.From reading the forum the relevant advice seems to be fairly old (2004-2006). I wonder if anyone can advise me what the current steps would be?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to setup and old BBSinside of DosBOXI've built one of the DosBOX Megabuilds, with the NE2000 patch.It uses libpcap in order to piggy back on top of the system's NIC. All of the dosbox side appears to be working.My system comes up, gets the MAC address i told it to use, i can load a packet driver in dosbox, all of that seems well and good. The issue, i think, is on the linux side. It's built on a Fedora 14 box. I'm getting the feeling that networking isnt getting out of the dosbox instance. Does it seem possible that fedora needs to have some config in place to link networking over to dosbox?

The Samba share is setup so that all files are readable and writable by everyone (it's only accessible via the local network). When I create a new folder on the share with either of my Ubuntu machines, the folder becomes non-writable by anyone ie. I can't place anything into the folder. I'm using the following command to mount the share:

I think the problem is with the way I'm mounting the share on my Ubuntu machines. If I go to the share using smb://192.168.1.160 in a file browser, I can create new folders which are readable and writable by everyone. But, if I create the new folder where it's mounted at /mnt/backup, no-one can modify or change it.
I have a software program that when you try to install it on Centos it returns "This programs requires RHEL 4" Is there a work around to get the software to use the Centos software the same as it would RHEL 4?

I have a X61s Thinkpad with a cracked screen which i use with the ultrabase with an external monitor and keyboard. The monitor requires me to use fbset on console and xrandr for a graphical enviroment Whilst i was using Arch i used 'startx' to access openbox and placed my xrandr configuration in ~/.xinitrc but with debian i have wanted to use a login manager, Slim.
Because i am using KMS for my intel based system i don't have an xorg.conf and because i am using slim i am not using ~/.xinitrc I read somwhere that creating an ~/.xprofile file would solve this but i have not had any luck. So i am wondering where would be the best place to put the xrandr configuration?
I've been looking for a way to run windows-only vst plugins nativley on linux as well as to find a linux driver for my 1394 audio interface with little luck; I would like to do so without relying on wine, and have come across an idea to work out after stumbling on a utility that converts dll to lib (called dll2lib). The idea would be to convert the dll's for a proprietary fw audio dev and dependent MS libraries and manually change what's needed to make it compatible with linux env. is this possible; will I be able to achieve source code from this? if not, what is the primary point of converting a dll to lib in the first place.

I have since installed Java into the usr/local/ directory however I am now just totally Lost! Additionally, I believe that i have tried to install Java several times with no luck.
Questions:
1) Where should java be installed to have system wide access to all programs?
2) How can I place the Java location in my $PATH? here I am going to need very easy and detailed instructions?
3) Is there a way to ensure that the location where I intall java gets updates?
Using a python script, I am gathering various info about all the ethernet adapters installed. For this I am parsing all the directories(each directory represent a ethernet adapter) inside"/sys/class/net/" directory.Is this is the correct place and de-facto standard for listing ethernet adapters?I am concerned about modern distros as well as a bit older ones for the presence of this directory.

The file I mean is one including the database name, user and password etc.
Following script name is 123.sh and I need to put this in the background if I do 123.sh -bg this will not bring me back to the prompt but echoes what ever I put (using echo hello >> /tmp/123) in to the /temp/123 file. the only way that I have found doing this is to do "nohup 123.sh &" to put this in to the background. Is this okay or is there any better way of doing this?

i would like to find and backup all *.mp4 files from /Pictures and its sub-directories and move them to a single directory on a remote. I can find and move the files but I don't want the directory structure...just the files to be placed in the remote directory.
To find my files I use
rsync -r -a -v -e "ssh -l user" --delete --include '*/' --include '*.mp4' --exclude '*' /home/drew/Pictures/ remoteserver:/Users/drew/mp4
but this creates all the subdirectories
I also tried
find ~/Pictures -name "*.mp4" -exec rsync -r -a -v -e "ssh -l user" --delete {} remote:/Users/drew/mp4 ;

I have a ZTE MF112 mobile broadband modem, which comes with Windows drivers and software. This software allows not only connect to Internet, but also send SMS and place calls (as in you dial number in program and when you're connected, sound goes through the sound card). As far as I know, almost any USB mobile modem comes with application to send SMS via its GSM connection.Now the question is - is there any vendor-independent software that runs under Linux and allows you to use your mobile broadband modem to turn your PC into larger mobile phone? Of course, I thought about the cp command but I guess the depth of the folder structure needs to be the same for this to work.
I need to write a shell script which can ready content of the folder and place files on remote FTP server. I need to make sure that a file that is already placed on remote FTP server is not attempted second time. The file names will be something like Records-2011-05-09. View 7 Replies View RelatedA friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

I have a Live minimal install Gentoo CD that was made from a downloaded ISO that does not contain the drivers/firmware for my wireless networking card in my laptop. So I unpacked the ISO image and un-squashed the squashfs and added two folders that contained the firmware in the /lib/firmware directory. Then I squashed the file system back the way it was (squashfs), and re-created the ISO again. Then I burned the ISO to an image on a blank CD but when I tried to boot from the new CD, the CD was ignored and the laptop went directly to the hard drive for booting. So the live CD is no longer a bootable CD. I can't even tell if the firmware will work because the CD is not detected at POST. The BIOS is set to boot from a CD before it pages the hard drive. The original CD booted fine before I made the modifications to it. I compared the contents of the original CD to the one I modified and everything is identical. What did I do wrong.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an intel 3945ABG wireless card. I installed "firmware-iwlwifi" with apt-get but I cannot enter in my network's SSID and wep. On Gnome, I click system, preferences, and networking, and I get that nice network menu, but it doesn't do anything!
It detects my wireless and wired card. I click on wireless, enter in my ssid, click WEP (hexadecimal), enter in my code. I choose auto DHCP. Then in the terminal I type iwconfig. It shows "wlan0" but the SSID field is blank. The wired works but I can't get wireless.
When I type ifconfig,
I see wlan0 and eth0. I want to somehow bind these two together into one device.
How would I go about doing this?
