Lately I have been very interested in minimal Linux distro's. At the moment I am specifically searching for command line only intended distro's (up to date) and even more preferable: command line only distro's available on a live cd or usb. Can anyone of you point me in a right direction or recommend a distro?
View 4 RepliesI've been unable to do a fresh install of XBMC Live 9.11 to my hard drive. Everytime it fails at the Install System step. But I am able to get XBMC Live 9.04.1 to install successfully. How do I upgrade XBMC Live 9.04.1 to 9.11? I understand that Ctrl+Alt+F2 brings up the command line, but what are the next set of commands to run?

I want to restore it to a new one where the partition size is smaller (the used space on the source partition is less than the destination partition size). Unfortunately when I try to restore it I get a error stating that I need to use -C to disable size checking.
View 2 Replies View RelatedCouple of days I go I setup VLC using Kubuntu's graphic software manager, and installed the 3 plug-ins, one of which was related to pulse. After doing this sound stopped working in flash videos. I had read, not sure where, that Kubuntu didn't use pulse (which slipped my mind when setting up VLC).
So I make the mistake of removing everything which had pulse in it's name (again, via the graphic software manager). A message popped-up saying that some packages needed to be removed/edited (a LONG list, a big clue that I was doing something stupid I guess). I let it run it's course and after that it won't boot properly.
If I boot it normally it hangs at the Kubuntu screen with the five dots filling endlessly. If I press F1 it's stuck at "checking battery status."
Recovery mode boots, but the recovery option does nothing.
So I was wondering if I could boot into recovery mode and go into the terminal and add a live USB as a repository for apt, and try to salvage the install?
Or should I admit defeat and reinstall?
What's a good linux command line utility for watching a log file live? It's probably obvious but I totally forgot it.

which does not work on the invisible directories (why?). When I used ".*" as wildcard it changed all (visible) files including the parent directory (the one I was currently working in which is the "dot") . I can change the invisible directories owner and group using dophin but how is it done from the command line?

I am trying to run Ubuntu from a live USB, everything seems to be great until I get to the part where the GUI should come up. Then I get this screen. It's a little hard to see, but it's basically a white bar at the top and black underneath. The black is flickering a lot and the flickering can stay for a short while (30-120 seconds) even after I have rebooted into windows. Sometimes the bar at the top is another solid color (purple,blue, orange, usually white though), I think it is putting my monitor in a strange version of it's self test.
When it is unplugged the monitor while cycle through full screens of different colors. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop AMD64, 10.10 i386, and the latest Fedora to see if another distro had different results. I have also tried 2 other USB drives. I am using Universal USB Installer 1.8.0.8 to make the drives. My own searches have found some problems with graphic drivers for the GeForce 8800 GTX, but they a bit dated. I have tried adding vga=vesa to the boot arguments, I am not sure if I did it right or not, but it resulted in a black screen with a blinking line instead and no flickering.

How can we do everything, or as much as we can do, from the command line? In particular, I am trying to get rid of the top panel in Ubuntu. Because,
1) It takes unnecessary valuable space.
2) Even if I use a huge monitor, it introduces distraction to me while working.
I created a shortcut so that with a single keyboard key I can open a terminal. For example, if I want to restart the computer, I use: "sudo shutdown -r now". Or I can even create a shorter alias. So I do not need the logout menu. But my problem is, some programs put an icon on the top panel when they are working. So, what is the best way of using command line, and getting rid of the top menu.
I was wondring if 7zip still only runs in the command line. I searched and got a bunch of old threads like this: [URL].. but I'm not sure if that has changed since 2007. A GUI would be awesome.

I want to do this in the easiest most sure way possible. (I am not using my real IP below for security.) I have tried the following commands.

About two months ago I upgraded my dual boot Linux-x86-64 Vista from Heron to 10.04 Lucid. Initially everything worked fine including wireless etc. Once I accidentally changed a few /etc permissions which caused a problem, but fixed it going into recovery mode. For the past weeks, I only used the windows. Over the weekend I tried logging into Ubuntu, the gnome would not come up. So, I went into recovery mode and typed "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" which also went through. However, after that I lost the recovery options. I had used that command very successfully in the past. Right now, I have no command line that would allow me to type something. I was wondering if there are any keys Alt+Del + something that would give me a prompt I can work with. I'm totally baffled as to how this can happen.
