Now I have to upgrade the packages to the latest version. I have to perform a yum update for the whole system first, then reinstall the packages right?
Will this affect the changes made to the configuration files? If yes, how do I upgrade so that the changes are not affected?

General :: Programs No Longer Showing In Task Bar - System Running Much Slower After Update
Apr 26, 2011using mint 10, now after updates my system is barely working. The programs were no longer showing in the task bar, and the system was running much slower.

This repeated over and over again. My temperature was never to high 40-55, and I found a suggestion to update my kernel to 2.6.37-020637. After doing so there is no longer the thermal limit exceeded error but the computer is still running poorly. The system is slow and again no programs are showing up in the task bar when open.

Jan 28, 2011Yesterday i have installed F14 and then went to the comand line to update the system via yum update. It was about 860MB of updates in 430 packages. The strange thing is that only one package was a delta rpm and all other were normal rpm. Is Fedora giving up on presto or it needs some special configuration?

I had a VERY complex problem with a "Kernal Panic" due to an update through update manager and my system would not run proficiently. I wanted to know if that bug was exclusive to Wubi installations or does it also exist with this method of installation. I'm not going to update ANYTHING until I know for sure.

Aug 4, 2010I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.
1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.
2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.
3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"
After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.
Red Hat :: Yum Will Not Update System
Aug 1, 2010I am actually running centOS but know thats that same as RH. I keep getting the message that there is nothing to update. But I find that hard to believe as this system was turned off for several months. So I know there are updates out there. Also I want to update to centOS 5.5 from 5.4. I cannot seem to get yum working. Any thoughts on how to fix the yum db so it will update?
All I can figure is that the yum db got corrupted or something. Yes I have gooled the heck out of it. I tried yum clean all not much luck there. I was able to get something to work but now I see lots of timeout messages on the mirror sites. Yes the system is on the internet and can get to www pages. However it does see slow. But I can ssh in fin.

Dec 26, 2009I was updating my F12 and the system crashed .. no idea why.. anyway I cannot boot anymore using the kernel 2.6.31.9-174, but I can boot using the 2.6.31.6-166 ... now when I issue the yum update, the system says its up-to-date...is there any way to 'force' the yum to update the system again ?

Jul 11, 2011My system system suffers from frequent kernel panics, which I think are due to gnome-shell with the nVidia driver. (I see no panic message and nothing is logged, but I've enabled magic SysRq and it makes no difference.) Twice this has occurred during yum-update's install stage, which is making me wonder. Uum-update then complained about an unfinished transaction, so I ran yum-complete-transaction as suggested. I've also tried yum-clean-all and rebuilding the RPM database, suggested in other threads, but I'm still seeing the following errors on yum-update:

I don't know where these 32-bit packages have come from this is an x86-64 system and the only x86-32 stuff I've intended to install is the Adobe flash plug-in. Also the later dupes are different 64-bit versions. I've tried "package-cleanup --cleandupes" as suggested in this thread: [URL]. It wants to remove the old versions, but also wants to remove packages that depend on them, including clutter, so I cancelled that. The first time round I was left with a barely usable system and had to reinstall, which I'd rather avoid, especially if this is going to be a regular occurrence. I'm not familiar with RPM (or kernel panics for that matter).
Ubuntu :: 10.4 System Freeze After Update
Jan 28, 2011Running Ubuntu 10.4 32bit (only) on my system with ati graphics card. I just ran a software update, and I believe a new kernel was installed. When I rebooted, I saw the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the system froze up and the screen went completely blank. Thinking it was a graphics issue, I tried to press escape to get into the grub bootloader. However, when I pressed escape at the proper time, the system just rebooted.
Thinking that grub was broken, I used a live cd to purge grub from my system and re-install it. When I rebooted, I got the same initial problem: I get the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the screen goes black and the system appears to be frozen. Again, if I press escape to try the grub bootloader, the system just reboots.

Feb 12, 2011I am using slackware64-current and this morning I have updated my system with using slackpkg. (As you know, huge changes has been applied on the current branch. Kernel, glibc and etc..) Everything went flawness and seems OK. I did not see any error message or somethink like this. After the update, kde does not start. Problem is, after KDM login, nothing happens and turn back to KDM login screen.
To understand what is going on, I switched to init 3 and performed "startx" command. Result is same but I saw some dbus error.
Then I checked whether hald and dbus does run or not and I saw it is running without problem.
Lastly I have removed dbus and hald packages and reinstalled but problem is still running.

Mar 17, 2010i don't know where to start exactly First i am kinda newbie in Ubuntu. I am working 7 months with Ubuntu and still i have many difficulties. I went through many problems and still i succeed to fix them all What have i done ? Well simply i have tried to update my system with "apt-get". Afterwards i saw a message "0 to install 0 to update 3 not upgraded". These 3 were linux-generic linux-headers-generic and one more. I have done this ... and suddenly i have chanched my kernel to the last version. After rebooting my machine the worst happened - i had no GUI, no graphics at all.
What the real problem is ? The problem is that i am student in IT engineering, where we work only and with Windows OS and ( isn't that funny?) and Windows Servers. However i preffered to use Linux because of the growing popularity of open source OS, because with linux i have more opportunities to learn new stuff and of course because i hate Windows the most . My problem is that i have 4 Virtual Machines in VirtualBox inside my computer.I still can see the files and i still can operate to some level. I have minimal graphic�l interface in "xterm" mode. Yes but i can't operate with them in "xterm" mode and that is so crucial for me. I have projects to make and i am depending of my virtualization. I don't want neither to change my beloved Ubuntu (if is still Ubuntu) and i can't risk to lose any data inside my computer. I will describe the steps i took in the next chapter of the thread

Jul 8, 2011I cannot update my system either with Update Manager nor with Synaptic. The system tries to download the updates, and then generates an error message that I have broken packages. So, I click on Fix Broken Packages, etc., and when running get the following error message:

This appears to me to be a system bug. I'm running the 32-bit version of Squeeze. Re-install, or ?
Debian :: Asynchronous Update System Between Two Computers
Jul 24, 2011In a few months I am gonna be starting a website that handles credit card information.
A requirement of my servers is that they be fully self-maintaining.
By this is mean that they will download their own updates, restart them-self, and switch them-self back on after general house power failure (black out).
Is there a way in Linux to make the computer automatically reboot itself after download and installing an update (if it needs to). My Linux uses the apt package system, with Synaptic Package Manager/Update Manager.
Now here is another problem I found. When a customer has logged into my site, my computer won't register them as logged in when they've rebooted? Like, its going to issue them new cookies? Credit card transaction process will be have to be restarted?
What if I build two identical server running in sync with each other... sort of like RAID mirror.. and they both download and install updates, once their both ready to reboot. Computer 1 will reboot. On successful reboot, System 1 alerts System 2 that it successfully reboot and that System 2 may now reboot. This way the customers experience is not interrupted.
Debian Configuration :: Crashed After System Update
Jan 23, 2011I updated squeeze last night for the first time. It worked fine after 1st reboot last night. There was one reboot stalled at "hald" so I shut down and restarted. Worked ok 2nd time around
Today,upon login I got a string of taskbar notification (which I couldnt read as they all overlapped . I was able to see a kernel error message but couldnt report it (network was down) or save it (USB stick not recognised) Some programs worked, others didnt
I have the partedmagic rescue distro on USB stick so have those programs to use in order to fix the problem. Any idea how I can repair this? I tried fdisk for the hell of it. reported clean partition as predicted. I am using debian-testing-amd64-kde.
