View 1 RepliesI have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.
Playing with the Box, I deleted a Raid-0 partition intentionally, saved it, and reboot drops me to (Repair Filesystem#) prompt. I notice during boot-up that the box didn't find /dev/md0, which is expected.
So what's the recovery procedure, since I can't edit #/etc/fstab, permission denied.
#fdisk -l
shows all other partitions.
Not much familiar with fsck/e2fsck, yet like to give it a try.
Original disk:
XP NTFS primary
Linux / ext4 logical
Linux /home ext4 logical
Win 7 NTFS logical
NTFS data logical
swap space
NTFS recovery partition
I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).
I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space.
Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.
Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?
I have created two logic disks /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 and /dev/VolGroup02/LogVol02
After reboot has disappeared /dev/VolGroup02/LogVol02
How to restore logic volume?
I have two ext3 partitions within an encrypted lvm2 volume. when i start up my system it says that there are 0.3% non contiguous blocks.
This is my steup:
When i want to repair with repair system from dvd it tells me that the repair and check operation for encrypted LVM devices is not supported. so how can i fix my filesystem?
I am running Suse 11.0 and the system had stopped working. I booted from the disk and chose repair system. Now I can get to the Give root password for login and it accepts the password, but I get the line
(repair filesystem) #
I am using Fedora core 10. I have changed my partition size of Linux from windows. After I finished resizing the partition, I rebooted my system to the Linux platform. While booting it gave me an
error: repair filesytem #1:
I don't know what to do?
I edited /etc/fstab and after that the computer won't boot up. I got as far as (Repair filesystem) 32 #mount -w -o -remount / and it says already mounted or busy. I type (Repair filesystem) 32 #mount And it looks like all mount points are (rw) I try to edit /etc/fstab but when I save it I get told that the filesystem is READ ONLY.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to mount a file image, like this
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps
But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?
I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
i have installed first xp after that liux . but now i want to format xp. but xp is not formatting

View 2 Replies View RelatedA drive in a RAID array failed and as a result one of the partitions held on the LVM has corrupted. The result of LVS is below.
Code:
[root@brassxen3 ~]# lvs
LV VG Attr LSize Origin Snap% Move Log Copy% Convert
MGT VG_XenStorage-511bee02-d169-b418-6a9e-a88b7e3ce939 -wi--- 4.00M
[Code]....
This partition belongs to a virtual machine, the partition is not visible when booting this VM using a live CD or attaching it to another VM. When booting anything with this partition attached it takes hours to boot.
I am having some weird problems on my Ubuntu Hardy. Single partition. I wonder if there's a chance i can avoid the reinstall afresh and try some sort of repair from the ISO cd...?! Is it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWould it be possible to use a Linux Distribution on a USB to repair a windows registry problem, or to use Linux to change some files in the Restore files? If so can anyone recommend a version? I have a laptop running windows Xp that has no cd drive, keyboard, or mouse function due to a registry error. I have a good restore point with the correct registry entries that I could change if it would be possible to boot from a USB version of Linux.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to use the live cd (Linux mint 9) to do a repair install on my system, but when I start, it says that it has detected another instance of linux and this must be removed before I can continue. I don't want to do this as I have a lot of data on this system and I don't want to lose it. The error occurred when I did a dist-upgrade and installed new kernels. Before I installed the kernels, a message came up saying the following packages are already installed but are no longer required. Use apt-get autoremove to remove them. I did this and now when I boot, I get as far as the five changing dots on the screen and it just stays there. I went into command line and ran apt-get mint-meta-main mint-meta-gnome, and at the end it came up with problem with /etc/utilities/desktop.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a win7/10.10 dual-boot set up, more or less following the lifehacker.com tutorial (I know, I know). I had to reinstall windows, and its taken over the MBR so that only win7 boots now. My shared drive and the ubuntu filesystem are still there, I just can't get to them without a boot cd. So, I tried to follow the tutorials, which all basically say to reinstall grub or grub2. I tried one method, but ubuntu told me that installing grub2 anywhere but the MBR was a bad idea

This only started happening quite recently - before this I could boot to Linux quite happily.
Just ran into an uncomfortable problem. I usually never save any documents on my machine, and keep all my stuff on an external USB hard disk. (an 80GB TrekStor DS microdisk q.u)
Well yesterday this disk just would not mount.
Read through related posts but nothing seemed to work. Even tried it on a Windows machine.
Tried TestDisk utility. Found nothing wrong with the drive, but still could not repair the MBR.log code...
Palimpsest Utility recognized the drive, but just will not let me do anything with it except format it.
How can i repair the partitions and MBR without losing all my data?
