I am having some weird problems on my Ubuntu Hardy. Single partition. I wonder if there's a chance i can avoid the reinstall afresh and try some sort of repair from the ISO cd...?! Is it?

I booted up Ubuntu after a couple weeks of downtime. I think it had just installed updates before I shut it down. It seemed fine. I started updating it, then it started giving me a bunch of errors about the root file system being mounted read only, so I had to reboot. I've heard that it does that if the file system is corrupted or there is a hard disk failure. When I rebooted, it kernel panicked on all but the oldest kernel which did a fsck and rebooted. Then I was able to get back in, but most of my panel applets are gone and cannot be restored, it fails to start x at boot with no errors and I have to start it myself from the command line, it is unable to do updates, samba is gone, whenever I update-grub to add Gentoo to the list, it doesn't stay there and the computer is really slow. I have backed up my home folder to another partition. Do you think I will be able to repair it at all or should I just reinstall?

So I was messing around trying to uninstall Nibbles and reinstall since I have an issue starting that game and something happened and removed the submenu under Games called "Logic", which had another whole list of games.
Is it possible to reinstall the games package or reinstall the update?I'm thinking more of the lines of a system restore or something so back 2 days from today.

A drive in a RAID array failed and as a result one of the partitions held on the LVM has corrupted. The result of LVS is below.
Code:
[root@brassxen3 ~]# lvs
LV VG Attr LSize Origin Snap% Move Log Copy% Convert
MGT VG_XenStorage-511bee02-d169-b418-6a9e-a88b7e3ce939 -wi--- 4.00M
[Code]....
This partition belongs to a virtual machine, the partition is not visible when booting this VM using a live CD or attaching it to another VM. When booting anything with this partition attached it takes hours to boot.

Would it be possible to use a Linux Distribution on a USB to repair a windows registry problem, or to use Linux to change some files in the Restore files? If so can anyone recommend a version? I have a laptop running windows Xp that has no cd drive, keyboard, or mouse function due to a registry error. I have a good restore point with the correct registry entries that I could change if it would be possible to boot from a USB version of Linux.

I want to use the live cd (Linux mint 9) to do a repair install on my system, but when I start, it says that it has detected another instance of linux and this must be removed before I can continue. I don't want to do this as I have a lot of data on this system and I don't want to lose it. The error occurred when I did a dist-upgrade and installed new kernels. Before I installed the kernels, a message came up saying the following packages are already installed but are no longer required. Use apt-get autoremove to remove them. I did this and now when I boot, I get as far as the five changing dots on the screen and it just stays there. I went into command line and ran apt-get mint-meta-main mint-meta-gnome, and at the end it came up with problem with /etc/utilities/desktop.

Playing with the Box, I deleted a Raid-0 partition intentionally, saved it, and reboot drops me to (Repair Filesystem#) prompt. I notice during boot-up that the box didn't find /dev/md0, which is expected.
So what's the recovery procedure, since I can't edit #/etc/fstab, permission denied.
#fdisk -l
shows all other partitions.
Not much familiar with fsck/e2fsck, yet like to give it a try.

The new GRUB2 was supposed to configure itself from the old grub, but got the kernel image partition wrong.I have booted from Knoppix live cd, but need to write to system files. I have searched, and found several suggestions that apparently work on Win machines, but RO permission for root on Linux is a harder nut to crack.

I have a win7/10.10 dual-boot set up, more or less following the lifehacker.com tutorial (I know, I know). I had to reinstall windows, and its taken over the MBR so that only win7 boots now. My shared drive and the ubuntu filesystem are still there, I just can't get to them without a boot cd. So, I tried to follow the tutorials, which all basically say to reinstall grub or grub2. I tried one method, but ubuntu told me that installing grub2 anywhere but the MBR was a bad idea

Just ran into an uncomfortable problem. I usually never save any documents on my machine, and keep all my stuff on an external USB hard disk. (an 80GB TrekStor DS microdisk q.u)
Well yesterday this disk just would not mount.
Read through related posts but nothing seemed to work. Even tried it on a Windows machine.
Tried TestDisk utility. Found nothing wrong with the drive, but still could not repair the MBR.log code...
Palimpsest Utility recognized the drive, but just will not let me do anything with it except format it.
How can i repair the partitions and MBR without losing all my data?

Original disk:
XP NTFS primary
Linux / ext4 logical
Linux /home ext4 logical
Win 7 NTFS logical
NTFS data logical
swap space
NTFS recovery partition
I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).
I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space.
Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.
Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?

A few months ago I unstalled Ubuntu on my PC and was dual booting it and Vista. It worked great, love ubuntu. However I did have to run windows for some things so Dual booting was a perfect set up. However, recently my windows messed up and I had to reinstall it. Now when I start my computer I don't have the option to boot Ubuntu and I can only run vista. My hard drive is still partitioned so I'm pretty sure Ubuntu is still there, just unaccessable.Do you guys(or girls) have any ideas on how I can boot Ubuntu without having to reinstall?

I've had problems with my Ubuntu partition on my computer, so I have decided that I might have to format the partition or reinstall Ubuntu.
My problem is that I have files on my partition that I would like to save. I've tried every tool I've found that allows Ext2 to be read in Windows, but none of them work for me. The best I have gotten is that I would be able to see the folders in /, but that is it. I was wondering if it was possible to reinstall Ubuntu without having to erase the partition.
