General :: How To Disable People From Changing Screensaver Time

Oct 25, 2010

Running RHEL5 and because of the environment that we are in we have to disable the users being able to change the screen saver. I have tried using the gconf-editor to see if I can disable it but don't know if that is the correct way of doing it. I also looked in /etc/xdg/menus and really don't want to miss with that.

General :: Automatically Set Screensaver Activation Back At 30 Minutes Each Time The Normal Screen Is Reactivated?

Mar 16, 2011

I'm running Fedora 14 and set the screensaver (in System>Preferences on the Gnome GUI) to activate after the computer is idle for 30 minutes. After the screensaver is activated, and a press a key or the mouse, the screen is back to normal -- no problem. After the screensaver has been activated once, however, it comes back on very quickly -- usually in 2 or 3 minutes if the computer is idle. The only way I have found to correct this (and set activation back at 30 minutes again) is to log out and back in again. How can I correct this, and automatically set screensaver activation back at 30 minutes each time the normal screen is reactivated?

OpenSUSE :: Changing GRUB Boot Splash And Installing Screensaver ?

Aug 16, 2010

Today I found out how to change theme in OpenSuse 11.3 64 bit. I'm running KDE 4.4. Naturally I went to KDE-Look.org and trawled it through for eye-candy. I got this HAL-9000 boot splash: HAL-9000 KDE-Look.org

Its a .gz file and uncompressed its called .xpm, I think its just an image, that I should put somewhere, but I don't know where. I tried the bootloader settings through yast, though it didn't tell me anything.

Secondly I got a screensaver, which I'm supposed to compile and install: KCometen4 KDE-Look.org

I tried following these instructions, as best as I could:

Code:

KCometen4 also comes with a simple configure script that should work for a generic local install. If it doesn't suit your needs, you will need to edit the cmake settings by hand.

Quick installation steps:

Cmake's equivalent to 'make distclean' is 'rm -rf build'.

If you do a local installation, you might not see KCometen4 in the Screen Saver Settings module. In that case, you will need to do one of two things.

First, you can set the $KDEDIRS environment variable in your X session startup script so it includes your local installation prefix:

Or second, you can set this for all users by adding your local installation prefix to /etc/kde4rc:

After that, you may need to manually refresh the system configuration cache by running 'kbuildsycoca4'. KCometen4 should now appear in Screen Saver Settings.

So I installed kdebase-workspace-devel but I couldn't find libqt-opengl-dev, but it didn't seem to be a problem, according to the console output:

Code:

It mentions some Q_WS_WIN, Q_WS_QWS and Q_WS_MAC, that it doesn't find. Could that be the problem.

I tried to see if the new screensaver got into the screensaver menu, it didn't.

Fedora :: Script To Disable Screensaver Only While Watching Movies

May 30, 2011

i would like to know if there are any good ways to disable and then reenable (the latter is key!) the screensaver so that it doesn't start when i'm watching movies with xine or when i'm watching flash things online like through hulu, videos, or so on. it's relatively simple to have a script run that will turn off the screensaver before starting a certain executable. but what about turning it back on again when the executable closes? and is there any way to detect that flash is running inside a browser window and then disable that temporarily?

I found a few threads dealing with this subject about a year ago but none seem to have come up with a simple answer. I use vlc and one writer indicated there was an option in vlc to disable the screensaver when in full screen mode. However, I've checked all over vlc and can't find this option.I'm not interested in creating a switch using Terminal to do this manually. I just want to know if disabling the screensaver can be automatic when in full screen mode - like in Windows

General :: Why Does Changing A Truecrypt Password Take Such A Long Time

May 31, 2010

I am changing the password of a truecrypt file container. This takes around 1 minute. Why?

time truecrypt --text --change /tmp/user1.tc --keyfiles= --new-keyfiles= --password=known --new-password=known --random-source=/dev/null"

If I use strace I see that it basically does not do anything: it simply reads lots of random data from /dev/urandom (even if i specified /dev/null as random source) and finally changes the password:

open("/dev/urandom", O_RDONLY) = 6
read(6, "36&{35121221234320234313242312I326235245224300354O)270Q200 201J227224311_212367"..., 640) = 640
close(6) = 0

Ubuntu :: Change The Screensaver Idle Time Via Gconf-editor?

Jan 11, 2011

I can use the gconf-editor to disable the screen-saver lock and set it to activate when its idle. But no matter what I change /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_delay to, the ScreenSaver UI is never updated and stays at the default 5 minutes. There seems to be no link between the slider bar in the ScreenSaver Preferences and the value that lies at /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_delay...

The reason why I'm doing it through gconf-editor is so a start-up script I have created can use gconftool-2 to alter settings for certain users on login.

Is this broken in Ubunto 10.04 or am I looking in the wrong place.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Goes To Sleep ... Can't Disable "powersave / Screensaver"

Jun 14, 2010

I have recently switched to Ubuntu (10.04) after running my system on Centos for years. This mostly due to much quicker startup times. I have a software that runs as a public presentation software on a public "bigscreen" so my Ubuntu runs like a "kiosk" pc that's always on. When i switched to Ubuntu everything worked lika a charm besides the fact that the screen falls in to "sleep"/"powersave" or something.

I think that i have tried everything to prevent this. I use Gnome and i have set all the powersavings features to off. Ive tried turning acpi off and i also turn dpms off at login. Nothing seems to kill the "screen powersaving" feature. As a desperate act i tried to use a software called Coffeine, this software should prevent powersavings. I added Coffeine to autostart to activate for 48h, I need the screen to atleast stay on for 24h.. Does anyone have an ide what cuses this? Dont really want to go back to Centos now... My system basicly looks like this:

General :: Change A Files Modification Date "only" Without Changing The Time?

I'd like to change a files modification date "only" without changing the time. I'm aware of the 'touch' command but is seems like it only allows changing both the date and time, and not one of them. Any ideas on an easy way to change a file's modification date without also changing its time? (I have a long list of files and thus would like to run one to command to change them all)Example: Change a file's (month) timestamp from "2010-09-23 11:59:23" to "2010-10-23 11:59:23"Background: I accidentally set the wrong month on my camera and ended up with all photos having a modification timestamp with the wrong month.
