View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server. However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get
Destination Gateway Iface
196.44.x.y 0.0.0.0 ppp0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 eth2 (my subnet)
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ppp0.
The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?

I have a server running Ubuntu server edition with SMB server all set up and running. I've set up the main root of the drive to be shared and I've set up a user in /etc/samba/smbusers to say root = "joeflood" so I can sign in as root using the username "joeflood". This works and I have read/write access to the filesystem (yay!). However, if I browse to /home/javawag (my main user home directory), I no longer have write permissions! I can see all the files in there and read them no problem, but writing is a no-go. I'm logged in as root though?! Btw, I can login via SSH and create folders/etc as root in the /home/javawag folder, and they showed up in the SMB mount on my mac too.

Is there a way to do this - perhaps through ssh?

I have a server located remotely that I'd like to protect by allowing access to only my IP address (on any port). Currently anyone can access the server using ssh, http, and any other services that my server is running. (The reason I need to protect it for now is that it's a test/development server and really only needs to be accessed by me.)
The downside of doing this is every time my desktop IP address changes (from where I access the remote server), I would need to update the iptables configuration. (This could be a hassle, but based on my limited knowledge it seems to be the best way to allow access from only myself.)
Could anyone share how to allow access to my server using iptables from only my IP address and on any port?
I have just configured samba on suse linux. I can see it in the windows workgroup but i cannot access it. When it says the server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.I have attached a copy of smb.conf

Possible Duplicate: Automatically start VNC server on startup I have a Linux server at home, and by default no-one is logged in to that box. I'd like to establish a remote desktop connection to it with VNC but this fails, unless I log in first physically. It's strange to me that VNC Viewer doesn't even ask for credentials, it just displays a "connection refused" error message. What's the best way to do this? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on the server.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm curious but recently I was troubleshooting some iptables rules to allow nfs clients access to my nfs server. What was strange was that I setup a tcpdump session on my nfs server so that I can see which ports were being requested. I ran several tcpdump sessions with the following filters in place.
tcpdump -vv src ip_of_client and dst _ip_of_client
tcpdump -vv src hostname_of_client and dst hostname_of_client
However, the only packet I ever saw come over the wire to me was the client host asking for a arp resolution. Anyhow, I finally just ran 'rcpinfo -p' and added those ports to my iptables rules and it worked great. However, I would like to understand how nfs works in case I need to troubleshoot it in the future. I do understand that nfs uses portmappers, would this explain the behavior?

Have no idea what I am doing operating a server. Our programmer got a new job and I am the one who has to take it over. Everything was fine til yesterday. You see I made a control panel to easier update the site www(dot)discoverysound(dot)com
but yesterday when I went to update the site I got an error called fopen. I thought I fixed it (and boy did I ever) but now I cannot get to my site because it says Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. I need to deploy Windows Server 2008 R2 onto a server that is currently running Linux. Effectively, I want to restore a Windows disk image onto the Linux system hard disk.I don't have physical access to the machine, so I need to find a way to do everything remotely, using SSH (no KVM). And the Linux machine only has one hard disk - the one containing the OS. However, I might be able to create a partition in free space at the end of the hard disk to store the image (I might need some help with the Linux commands). Or perhaps the image file can be pulled via FTP.
I tried Acronis but was disappointed to find that it doesn't seem to allow me to overwrite the system partition (unlike the Windows version of Acronis, which is capable of doing this with a restart).
We want to set up a Linux server (hosting Git or later SVN repositories) which should have all stored data strongly encrypted, so that if one steals the server the data cannot be read. For example, our notebooks have all important data stored on a "true-crypted" partition.
We plan to access it with SSH private keys and only after successful login should the data be readable. The server would be located in our office, shut down at night and not be connected to the Internet directly, but only accessible in our intranet.
