Does someone have the same problem ?Another issue is that in my install the /home mount point was mounted on top of an older install of Opensuse.

I've been facing this problem of locking up files, I've three users in my system, I can't lock a folder but just can hide it by appending . in front of file. Is there any tool/software in linux to lock a file, so other users cannot even open/see. I tried with chmod options but didn't work?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI use a Mac at work. Attached to it is an external hard drive (personal) that I would like to either encrypt or either make invisible tave ubuntu on my personal laptop.Could I make it ext4 and unviewable by Mac or PC or something along those lines so that nobody just goes through my (personal) stuff by just logging in and going on the desktop? I'm looking for something that will still allow me to access them fairly easily such as file permissions or something. I don't wanna put it into a zip file or a password protected rar file. I know nothing is 100% but I at least want a layer of security.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to hide some folders in Ubuntu Linux which are always hidden in Windows through File/Folder Attributes (attrib -h)
It is not an option for me to rename the folder from let's say "Ancient texts directory" to ".Ancient Texts Directory" because the programs associated with these files and shortcuts will not work in Windows. I would like to make the folder hidden by not renaming the folder. Is that so hard to ask?
Is there really no other way of making a folder or a file hidden in Linux just like in Windows by Applying Attributes? I Don't want to rename it by putting a dot in front of it. Moreover renaming a file by putting a dot in front of the name changes the position the folder appears in the list view. For some people this may be ridiculous, but for me with a few hundred files and folders and subfolders, this organisation is important, aside from the aforementioned reasons.
I need to maintain compatibility between the two operating systems' basic folder structure as i must use both Operating systems.
I just moved my bottom panel to the right side of the screen and set it to auto-hide., The panel hid it'self but will not un-hide when I move the mouse to the edge of the screen... I tried to re-boot, but the panel is still "stuck"Is there an easy way to fix this? Or will I have to manualy delete the panel and make a new one

View 3 Replies View RelatedI presume that if this is possible it would need to be done as root (or as a user who shares root's UID of 0).How can a process be launched so that it does not show up in a ps aux or ps ef or top listing if the command is run by non-root?Is this even possible? The distributions I typically run are RHEL/CentOS and Ubuntu - so if there is a distro-specific answer, that's ok, too.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs it possible for a non-root user to hide themselves from the output of who/w, so that they can be logged in without other users seeing it? I think that the file /var/run/utmp might have something to do with this, but it's not writeable by non-root users (permission 644). I'm fairly certain that this can be done by a non-privileged user (because someone told me that they were able to do so), but I don't know how they did it and can't ask them right now.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI installed the new Frugalware 1.2 via USB and that went well. I wanted an LXDE menu, as I don't like the "style" of the KDE menus, and the KDE menus seem slow, too.
The problem is that after installing LXDE, I have the LXDE menu from what I'd call the start button, which I like, but the KDE menu is now covering the entire screen on all desktops, and there seems no way to minimize it. I doubt I'll have to use it often, but don't want to lose all access to the programs on it. I haven't checked to see if all the programs are on the LXDE menu, but I noticed that Gfpm (the package manager) is now missing from the menu. Not sure if anything else has disappeared.
n Is there a way to minimize or hide the KDE menu?
