I have three 640GB sata hard drives that I would like to put into a raid 5 configuration. I would like to opt for a software raid 5 so its hardware independent. I was trying to follow these instructions, but they seem a bit dated.
View 2 RepliesI am currently trying to configure a set of hard drives as a RAID configuration. My system is running with Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.1 as the base OS. I am booting from CD. I am trying to image a set of drives that have not been imaged before. When the GUI dialog window for disk setup is displayed, it shows a default disk layout including a LVM slice. In the disk layout is a /boot partition already. It is not what I would like so I edit it to be the size for my system and make it the primary partition. I also select it to be a software RAID. I then add three more partitions for my drive 'A' all of type software RAID and NOT primary partitions.
At this point my drives have the correct number of partitions except for showing the LVM slice. I select 'RAID' again, followed by selecting 'Clone a drive to create a RAID device ...' followed by 'OK'. I then get a dialog to select the source and target. i select my drive 'A' to be the source and 'B' to be the target followed by 'OK'. An error dialog is received stating that all the partitions are not of type software RAID. The disk partitions are all type software RAID except the extended LVM slice. I can not get past this point and I am following a procedure written some time ago by a person that is not available.
(Ubuntu 10.10) I went to System->Preferences->Power Management and checked spin down hard disks whet possible. I have two internal sata hard drives. One is for the OS and the other is for media. Neither Hard disk is being spun down. Is there something else I need to do?

Will Linux with GRUB be able boot from such a hard drive without a BIOS upgrade? With a BIOS upgrade? It's fine for me to upgrade my Linux to the newest kernel.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have three Linksys NSLU2s each running nearly identical setups: SlugOSBE 5.3 with two USB SATA hard drives in enclosures. One partition on each drive is used for software RAID 1. The third NSLU2 which has two identical 500gb Western Digital Blue Scorpion SATA drives and two identical USB enclosures (Flexmate) is giving me issues. The second hard drive keeps getting booted from the RAID array - looking into it I noticed that, for some reason, Linux is reading both RAID partitions as having an identical UUID. I thought maybe that was the issue so I've set about trying to fix it.
SlugOSBE doesn't have tune2fs, so I removed the drives and used tune2fs to create new UUIDs for both partitions (which usually show up as /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3) on my Kubuntu 10.10 machine. tune2fs reports the correct new UUID under Kubuntu. But when I plug the drives back in to the NSLU2, it still shows the old UUID for both drives. I've deleted /etc/blkid.tab, but that doesn't seem to do anything.
I recently finished installing Fedora 9 on a Prolient ML 330 G6 Server, but i configured the SATA hard drives to be viewed as four seperate hard drives. I was asked to merge the drives to be seen as one 800GB hard drive, my biggest fear is that we had set up Samba to share folders between fedora 9 giving specific users access to specific files saved on the Prolient server, will those settings be lost.And could you call that a File Server or do you have to enter any more settings And also if anyone could point me to a tutorial on Logical Volume Management and Raid specifically for fedora 9

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!
1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)
2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.
3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?
Is there an easy way to add SATA drives to an existing system and have them m automatically at boot?So far I've been able to create a partition and format but they never mount at boot.What do I have to put in fstab so it will work?Also, since RAID doesn't work in Debian, is it possible to make two drives mount at the same folder

One of the drives is full of data so I will need to start with a 3 disks and then once I copy the data from the 4th onto the array, I will then add the 4th drive. View 4 Replies View RelatedSo windows wouldn't recognize my drives as a raid setup, so I disabled it and switched to IDE, now Ubuntu 9.10 installation will only recognize my drives as RAID. I have and ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe Series motherboard, it has 4 sata connectors and 2 marvel controlled sata connectors. In the 4 sata connectors I have my 2 wd 500gb hds, my dvd burner, and my external usb, esata slots. In the marvel controlled sata connector I have a wd 160gb hd. Originally when I built the computer I wanted a raid setup with the 2 500 gb hds.
But windows wouldn't recognize the raid set-up and wouldn't boot properly. So I said screw it and removed the raid and set all the drives to IDE. Then, when I tried to install Ubuntu 9.04 it would only recognize my 2 500 gb hds as raid. Gparted recognizes the drives as both raid and IDE. Eventually, after a day or two of praying and messing around the installer recognized both drives as raid and IDE. A couple months later here I am trying to install Ultimate Edition 1.4.
I'm renting a dedicated server with a company that claims that the server has 2 hard drives in a software RAID 1 array, but I need to make sure that the server really has the 2 HDD, and the size of the 2nd drive... how to do that ?? system is Centos 5.3

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a PC104 running debian. I have 3 hard drives (in addition to the one booting) mounted in fstab by UUID. I use the options defaults,error=remount-ro. However, this means that when I boot with the hard drives not attached, I have to press Ctrl-D to bypass when the boot discovers the drives are missing. Is there a timeout commandoption I can add to fstab so that it automatically continues booting even if the hard drives are not attached? I could not find anything on a timeout command. (I tried adding timeout=1000 but no-random guess)

I've got 4 identical 1 TB drives and would like to use them in a software RAID configuration on my home server. I'm running Debian Linux using 'mdadm' utility to manage the software RAID. I don't know how much I've read is fact or dated or even false so I decided I would ask here to get help from people who know more about this than I do. This is essentially just a file server machine to store all my data so being that I've got four identical SATA hard drives, I was thinking about doing RAID level 5. I guess I'll start here and ask if that is the recommended level of RAID. I think RAID level 5 will be fine for my general server usage. My second issue is partitioning the four individual drives to get maximum performance / space from them. Basically just asking here how would you or you recommend I partition the drives? I was thinking about doing three seperate partitions per drive:
/dev/sda1 = 4 GB (swap)/dev/sda2 = 1 GB (/boot)/dev/sda3 = 995 GB (/)Now from that partition schema above, obviously all the types will be 'fd' for RAID and the partition for /boot is going to be bootable. My confusion is that I read Grub doesn't support booting from RAID 5 since Grub can't handle disk assembly. If /dev/sdx2 (sda2, sdb2, sdc2, sdd2) are partitioned for /boot (bootable), how would you guys configure this RAID to match up equally? I don't think I do a RAID level 1 on 4 identical partitions, right?
I have been battering with FC10 and software RAID for a while now, and hopefully I will have a full working system soon. Basically, I tried using the F10 live CD to setup Software RAID 1 between 1 hard drives for redundancy (I know its not hardware raid but budget is tight) with the following table;

I set these up by using the RAID button on the partition section of the install except swap, which I set-up using the New partition button, created 1 swap partition on each hard drive that didn't take part in RAID. Almost every time I tried to do this install, it halted due to an error with one of the raid partitions and exited the installer. I actually managed it once, in about...ooo 10-15 times of trying but I broke it. After getting very frustrated I decided to build it using just 3 partitions

I left the rest un-touched. This worked fine after completing the install and setting up grub, reboot in to the install. I then installed gparted and cut the drive up further to finish my table on both hard drives. I then used mdadm --create...etc to create my RAID partitions. So I now have

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just went out and bought stuff to build a new computer, and among the parts was a Gigabyte ga-890fxa-ud5 motherboard ([URL]). The board has 3 (well, 4, but we'll stick to the 3) main sata interfaces, with 2 slots per interface, allowing 6 sata drives. In slot_0 i put my blu-ray drive, in slot_1 i put my drive that will host the OS and its partitions, and that is in the sata connector pair on the left. The middle sata connector pair (slot_2 and slot_3) i have 2 2tb drives, and in the sata connector pair on the right (slot_4 and slot_5) i have 2 1.5tb drives.

I'm about to install Ubuntu on two 250-gigabyte hard drives in a RAID 1 array, but I'm confused about how to partition my hard drives. How much space should I give to each partition? How many partitions should I create and where should I mount them? (I should mention that Ubuntu will be the only OS on this array.)

I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. View 10 Replies View RelatedI realize this has been asked many times before, but I'm fairly certain I've read through the majority of those threads and haven't found a working solution yet. I recently built up a Ubuntu Server 10.10 x64 box for backups, serving up files, and development activities. The server is running SATA drives in AHCI mode. Because this is a file server I have quite a few hard drives installed, which are currently a mix of WD 1TB Black and Green drives. I'm attempting to get my non-boot/data only drives to spin down after 10 minutes. I've tried the following:
1. Edit hdparm.conf with the following, replacing 'b' with the identifier for each disk:

This fails, and based on my research I'm pretty sure udev isn't properly running the hdparm configuration anyway.
2. I've also tried manually setting the spin down time with hdparm as follows (via command line and through rc.local):

hdparm -q -S 120 /dev/sdb
Which states that it successfully set the spin down timer to 10 minutes, but this also fails as the drive never spins down.
3. Finally, I just forced it to spin down immediately with:

hdparm -y /dev/sdb
This worked! Unfortunately, that approach isn't terribly useful. The drive stayed spun down for 20 minutes (thus far), so I haven't bothered to run iostat, etc to try and figure out if something is keeping the drives active. I don't believe there is because one of my drives isn't even mounted currently and it also won't spin down automatically.
