General :: Generating A White Noise Audio File?
Jan 3, 2011
My apt gets noise from outside. I would like to generate a white noise audio file and play it to block outside noise. I would prefer something like the low frequency hum of a big fan. How can I generate this file in using linux tools?

Is there an application available to generate videos of waves of an audio file? I've seen this kind of things in player's plugins but they are normally just viewers and won't generate a video from it.

My microphone was working properly until four days ago. I'm not sure if this appeared after a system update, I'm using LL 10.04. This is my onboard HDA Intel chip, from 'lspci':
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JD/DO (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
I can record sounds from the microphone, but white noise is accompanied. The weird thing is that when I unplug the microphone, I can still hear the white noise. I've tried modifying the settings in gnome-volume-control and in alsamixer without luck. The white noise is persistent. I've read this can be related to pulse audio but no one seems to know how to reset it to its default configuration.

Well I've been trying to get suse 11.x up on antec media center and run mythtv on top of the platform. Only one thing "partially" missing is the sound. I hope that I'm not annoying anybody by posting this on the wrong site but hopefully somebody will give my directions on that or if there are something that I forgot to mention. I'm lost here and I hope somebody has the same problem and a solution to this problem ! Problem. Mythtv, xawtv and tvtime all display picture close to 100%. Sound start as 100% ok but after 30s - 100s gets lot of white noise in it.

I don't get any error messages or dmesg on this so nothing there.

I've been giving the task to go to a Linux console as root. and generate a ssh rsa 4096bit key, and copy the private key to a USB drive.
1) What command should I use here? ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 ?
2) Do I need to append the new private key to the authorized_users file? Which file exactly must be appended there? Would this be sufficient?
mkdir -p /home/myuser/.ssh
cat id_rsa_LOCAL.pub >> /home/myuser/.ssh/authorized_keys
Should any special permissions be applied to this file?
3) Which file must be sent to my usb drive so that I can take it home to connect with?

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 x64 on an HP Pavillion, p6110y PC. Whenever I playback audio, and have not played audio for several seconds, I hear a clicking noise before the audio starts to play. I did not have this problem with Ubuntu 9.04 x64 on the same computer, and I think that PulseAudio is to blame, as usual. Does anyone have any advice as to how to stop this clicking noise? I found something that might be relevant to this issue: http://www.flibblesan.co.uk/2009/10/...-playback-bug/.

Whenever I play a flash object that has sound, there is this repetitive beeping noise audible over the audio track. I've tried this on different videos and different sites, always with the same result. Whenever I play a multimedia file in Iceweasel, for example [URL]... plodes.ogv , the sound is normal, as is the sound for any multimedia file that I play in MPlayer. So, I am convinced it is a flash issue. What I don't get is why this just started happening for no apparent reason.

I have been using windows operating system for a long time now, but I am not well familiar with linux. Whenever I used to install Windows, I used to install the corresponding audio drivers(in order to listen to the music). The problem I am facing is that I do not know how to install the audio drivers(if they really exist in linux Mint 10 operating system). As a result I am not able to listen to any audio file due to lack of corresponding audio driver programs. make proper configurations settings so that I can listen to audio files in Linux Mint version 10.

I've been trying to write php or perl code to generate the sha-512 password hashes in fedora. I've been unable to do the hashing which is encoded in the shadow file on fedora core 11. Does anyone have php or perl code which provides the hashing algorithm. (All of my attempts result in the encrypted hashing being longer than 86 character -- the length that crypt says the sha-512 should be)

My computer fan sounds very much on certain Linux distro's.
On some it nearly doesn't sound at all.
The ones I've tried which sounds alot:
Arch with KDE and Xfce
Chrunchbang with Openbox
Fedora 15
The ones who the computer fan nearly doesn't sound at all:
Ubuntu 11.04
Mint 11
Xubuntu 11.04
Does anybody have an idea why my fan is very quiet on the Ubuntu distros.
I acually would like to use Arch but I really hate when the fan makes alot of noise.
And I don't really understand why Chrungbang sound alot neither. It uses Openbox which is very light on resources and also Chrunchbang is based on Debian which Ubuntu is as well.

I have a vp6 codec flv. I have a wav file that I want to convert into mp3 and added to the vp6 flv. So when I play the flv the audio is added and the video quality is not changed.I tried:ffmpeg -i 20.flv -i 20.wav -vcodec copy -acodec libmp3lame new_file.flvbut I an error "Could not write header for output file #0 (incorrect codec parameters ?)". I'm guessing because it is a vp6 flv codec. Is there a way to just add an audio file to the flv? There is no audio in the current flv. I cannot lose any quality in the video.

I have a number of uncompressed audio files recorded off of an analog (POTS) telephone line of fax transmissions. Is there a Linux utility or library I could use to convert these files into images of the fax they contain? I'm not looking to send/receive a fax via a modem, but just to "replay" the communications tones and parse out the fax message.I'm guessing this may not be possible due to duplex issues and not knowing which end of the conversation is sending what, but thought I'd ask to see if anyone knew of something.
