Logical Memory Space of 4GB is divided in to 3GB User Space and 1GB Kernel Space. Always. Correct?

1. How can we change it? (just changing value of PAGE_OFFSET is okay?)

2. If system have only 256MB of memory (embedded system) and suppose Kernel Modules eat away all the memory during boot. User space will be left will no memory. Is this case possible?

Server :: Using Some Application To Block IP Addresses?

Feb 16, 2011

now I have managed my rsyslogd to log the firewall into a separate file I would like to use a script which looks into this file for intruders which for example try to ping, telnet, ssh, rdp etc into my dsl connection. And then use a kind of app or firewall on my ubuntu server to block them.Yes my firewall logs them but does not block them if the policy is enabled, so they have access on through the firewall and the connect to my server but I only want some known IP addresses have access through it and this I cannot program in the firewall so I have to use some extras.Or am I thinking way to far and is there a better solution with IPtables or app?Is it possible to watch tcp connections between the firewall from outside IP addresses and the ubuntu server?

Software :: How To Allocate More Than 2GB Memory For An Application On 32 Bit?

Oct 6, 2010

Can anyone tell me is there a way to add more than 2GB memory application in a 32 bit server? I found on many threads that it is not possible to set memory limit of a particular application to more than 2GB. I am using Fedora release 8 and trying to add more than 2GB memory to tomcat. If I modify the variable CATALINA_OPTS in /opt/bobcat/bin/catalina.sh (Startup script of tomcat) and add a value greater than 2GB for memory, tomcat wont start. Is there any work around / Kernel Patches available? Suggestions??

There's a discrepency between the memory accumulated by the various applications (using "ps -eF" to collect that) and the memory reported by system monitor/"free" Basically, I have around 0.5GB of memory that is not occupied by any application, but is not free as well. (It is not used as cache as well)

Software :: Runtime Memory Usage By A C++ Application?

i have a c++ application that consumes a lot of run time memory. It is a very large project with a lot of sub-modules. My target is to reduce the runtime memory usage as much as possible. Therefore i would like to know if there is a tool that i can use to profile the code (note that i am not interested in checking for memory leaks / corruptions so Valgrind is not for my purpose) I need to know which module has the most static data like large arrays or a lot of variables to know where to start reducing.

Programming :: Physical Memory Leaked By User Application Process Is Not Reclaimed Back After Exit?

May 2, 2010

Whenever I'm running my application process, I've 1M physical memory usage is increasing for every 2 hours. This I observed using 'free -m' command. But 'top' command did not showing any increase 'RSS' size.It is same as it was started initially.Even though I stopped my process, the increased memory was not released back. If I start my application process then again memory usage start increasing by 1M for every 2 hours. increase of memory usage observer with 'free' and that too when my application is running, but top command is not showing any change in the RSS sizeIf my application is leaking any memory which is allocated by new/malloc, that should be released back whenever my application exit and the size increase will be show through top command for that process, right? This is not happeningThis proves that there is no potential leaks in my process. But why physical memory is increasing when only my process is running?

I've been giving the task to go to a Linux console as root. and generate a ssh rsa 4096bit key, and copy the private key to a USB drive.

1) What command should I use here? ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 ?

2) Do I need to append the new private key to the authorized_users file? Which file exactly must be appended there? Would this be sufficient?

mkdir -p /home/myuser/.ssh
cat id_rsa_LOCAL.pub >> /home/myuser/.ssh/authorized_keys

Should any special permissions be applied to this file?

3) Which file must be sent to my usb drive so that I can take it home to connect with?

This is my first post in these forums. I'm still quite new to Linux (using Mint 9) so please bear with my not-very-articulate question(s)When I boot up and open up a tty terminal I get a message saying "Memory corruption detected in low memory." I've done an extensive google search about the issue and it seems not uncommon. I ran a memtest with no errors returned, so I'm sure that there's nothing really wrong with the memory; apparently it's a bug in the kernel that's causing this.

General :: Application Called Impact - Paths In Java Application ?

Apr 14, 2010

So, I have this application called Impact, it is an explicit time integration Finite Elements code written in Java...

[url]

I untar the pack, and launch the application calling a script, from within the untarred folder,

Code:

This launches a gui which allows me to setup a case, which needs some setup file, tipically some *.in and a mesh file, tipically some *.msh.

Other mode of executuion consists of calling the setup file as argument to Impact.sh script ( CLI execution mode, for g33k5 )

My problem is : I have packed the whole stuff into a Slackware .tgz, that places it in /usr/local/Impact, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin,

Code:

Code:

I decided to hack the ImpactGUI_OGL_linux_amd64.sh script from

Code:

Code:

no avail,

Code:

even after adding /usr/local/Impact/bin to PATH... won't go...

I can run this thing from within its directory... but I do not like messing within the directories of my applications, this is why I sent this to /usr/local, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin...

General :: Uninstall Grub From Logical Partition

Dec 28, 2010

I'm multi-booting with Windows 7 x64 and (at least) Linux Mint. Because I hadn't yet made a backup of my MBR, when I installed Linux Mint on a logical partition, I told the installer to put GRUB on the partition instead of in the MBR. This turned out to be useless, as I need to use GRUB from a boot disk to get into the GRUB I installed. Before installing it in the MBR, I'd like to get it out of the partition, preferably without wiping and reinstalling Linux. I don't relish the prospect of going through two layers of GRUB when I want to boot Linux. How do I get it out, or what other options are available to me?

General :: Cannot Create Logical Partitions Without Errors

Jan 14, 2010

I have run into a Gparted problem that I am not familiar with. I've never seen it before.

I cannot create logical partitions without errors or not at all. I have two choices:

1) not checking 'round to cylinders' - I will get an error* and it will not partition

2) check 'round to cylinders' - it will partition but I will also obtain 4MB of unallocated space (each time)

This applies to Primary partitions, too, I think. At least, #2 will happen.

Imho, this is ridiculous. Why would I retain 4MB of unallocated space? In other words, the two choices above are not choices.

The error message doesn't explain much if anything either. *"Unable to satisfy all constraints on the partition"
