My gateway laptop shuts down either imediately after booting, or while I'm online, usually within the first 5 minutes. I have a laptop cooler and aima fan at the laptop while using it. Could it be the hard drive? Is there any way of knowing before I buy a new hard drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for about one year. Recently upgraded to 10.04. The PC tries to boot, comes to the "Booting from device hd..." screen and then shuts down. It shuts down or halts but doesn't power off. The CPU is still powered. This happens for about 2 in 4 boots. The recovery mode runs just fine. It says no damaged partitions. Only the 'booting from device' is the problem point.

Got it back and they said my issue could not be replicated, so they just cleaned it and such and gave it back. Well so far it's been going pretty good, monitor stays on except when i turn on Heroes of Newerth.
What kind of problem is this and is it easily fixable?
I have a NVIDIA Geforce 6150 LE video card and it is on the motherboard. I vaguely remember something on some site about nvidia cards, but can't remember what. It gets to the part where it says something like "Boot Ubuntu from the CD." I hit enter and it shuts my monitor off.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUPDATE2: As of 2 weeks ago, it won't boot at all. UPDATE1: HDD booted OK, but I don't know how to copy the GRUB file. Could this be a hardware temperature problem? I have just replaced a Hard Drive, & had to reinstall XP & 10.04.2LTS from scratch, (it was a TOTAL failure) The system now will not boot into XP, or either of the 2 Linux kernels or the recovery modes, without several attempts. ( I'm using a LiveCD now.)
POST is good. GRUB loads, but when I select an OS, it powers off. Windows shows the splash for a few seconds, then shuts down. Yesterday, I was able to boot into Linux after booting into Windows, but today Windows won't boot either. On examining the GRUB menu (e) the first line in the Linux records is 'recordfail' I will attempt to boot from HDD now, & post the GRUB output here. EDIT: If I run MEMTEST first, up to Test6, it boots normally.

For some reason,Ubuntu tends to use my CPU quite a lot.This cause my laptop to get really hot.Sometimes it even gets to the point when it automatically shuts down because of the CPU's temperature.Is there some sort of program or application to fix this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm rather new to Linux and haven't been on it for more than a week. I've been trying to find a Linux operating system that'd be compatible with my computer - I went through about 4 of them before finding openSUSE and really liking it. My main problem now, however, is that it seems to be rather unstable when it comes to running programs after a while. I've been on the computer for about 30 minutes for this session and tried using skype, for example. After about 5-10 minutes of using it, skype ended up crashing. There weren't any other programs open at the time either. After a while of doing anything, it usually lags up, taking about a minute to unstick so programs respond, and even gets to the point where it sometimes doesn't detect my keyboard strokes (though I think this is a separate problem that has to do with the disfunctional multimedia buttons - usually, after a minute or two, the typing begins to work again).
I've also noticed, however, that when trying to start up, the computer automatically goes to a 'start up options' screen where I can either boot in openSUSE normally or try the failsafe option. Is this normal? Usually, before shutting down or booting up, a black screen with white writing will flash by, sometimes followed by multicolored stripes before settling on the openSUSE log-in screen - at first this freaked me out and I'm still not sure if that means it's having an adverse reaction with the computer. The webcam doesn't stay disabled either after restarting, but I'm not sure if this is normal or not.
Has anyone else experienced these problems? The Windows Vista Home 64-bit that I had installed on my computer originally was OEM and I tried calling Gateway for help with the computer when something happened to the operating system that made it unable to connect to the internet regardless of what I tried to do (even the system diagnostics tool didn't help). I mention this because I'm wondering if the fact that it was OEM might have something to do with it? Or should I not try Linux at all on here and return back to Windows for this one? I've read around and a few people have said Linux is best working when installed by the manufacturer before purchase. Is this true?
After the problem with Vista, when I came upon the Linux OS's I was really intrigued, and I find I really like them especially for the fact that there's so much interaction with the terminal command prompt. I'd like to continue working with the openSUSE OS but does it sound like I should? or should I install the 32-bit version instead?

After I put my laptop for a system update, some of it [sounds] works selectively in my browser when I am watching ..... but when I am playing some musics on my desktop, there's no any sounds coming out. Then I noticed that my Output is still in 100% but 0.00db and a Dummy Output.
I already tried some steps I saw in some threads that has the same problem too but it became worse, I no more [completely] sounds anymore.

The second is my laptop having ubuntu 8.10.Both these computers are connected to each other via the broadband router which assigns ips 192.168.1.3 to my laptop and 192.168.1.1 to my desktop. I am able to browse the lan of 192.168.11.x via the desktop and I want the same possible on my laptop whose only connection is through the router to the desktop. Is there any way I can do it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friend has a HP Pavilion dv2699ea (dv2500 series - somehow *shrugs*) that has stopped working. It's a Core2Duo laptop with a Nvidia GPU. The unit is no longer under warranty. Problems first started a few days ago with the laptop showing corrupted graphics in Windows and BSOD'ing after a few minutes of use. I tried booting to an Ubuntu LiveCD which worked for a while before succuming and crashing as well. The freezing/graphics corruption/BSODing does seem somewhat heat related (CPU runs at ~95'c under load) however I believe that if it is heat related, then it's already damaged components inside.
Now the system has corrupted graphics on bootup[1], including booting Ubuntu[2], and neither operating systems will boot at all (Windows can sometimes get logged in before showing a black screen and becoming unresponsive. Ubuntu just looks like [3] after X starts). (See comment below for links.)
The fact the problem occurs both under Linux and Windows says to me this is not a driver issue. I have run Memtest which passed fine and none of this seems HDD related as I managed to get ~30GB of data off the system before it finally gave up the ghost.
She has been using it repeatedly without giving it adequate ventilation for years (i.e. on the bed, or on a pillow), so it's my opinion that the system board has probably warped over years of cooling/heating and that's causing this current problem. If that is the case, then I can buy a replacement system board and fit it myself, saving about £200 over the cost of an out-of-warranty HP repair. Of course, I don't want to make her spend £100 on a replacement part for it to be the wrong thing, hence asking for a second opinion here!
Hopefully I've covered all the bases here. I'm a former IT support guy myself, so I've tried all the dumb stuff (driver updates, examining memory dumps from BSODs [one 'unrecoverable hardware error', three relating to the graphics card], etc).
i've just got my gateway laptop which has a recovery option. Due to my observation, the computer has 3 primary partitions when I firstly got it: 12.7 GB, whose property is system recovery (empty and hidden); 100MB whose properties are ACTIVE, primary partition; partition C whose properties are BOOT, system, primary partition, crash dump and page file. Seems that when the machine starts, it firstly read the 100MB partition and then it is leaded to the partition C, where the windows 7 is installed. I SHRINKED THE PARTITION C AND CREATED 3 LOGICAL DRIVES.
Now I want to install OpenSuSE 11.4 on one of my logical drives. What should I do to keep all things well, which means I will be able to dual-boot and also keep my recovery function well? What's more, what I do not want is that the windows 7 cannot be chosen at boot or neither of them can boot!
I have an intel core i3 laptop, it has 4gig of ram only showing 2 I am also running the x64 bit version of fedora 14.. My graphics will not work correctly. I have tried the intel driver for linux.. It did not work( or i did something wrong) very possible in messing up the install. I would llike to know if there is an update coming out or if i could get a step by step on how to fix, this issue..

I recently switched from windows 7 to ubuntu 10.10 on my Gateway NV56 laptop. I previously had used wubi on it and had no problems, but with this installation it frequently crashes to a black screen and I have to reboot via the power switch. alt+sys-req+REUISB does not work, and I have lost a lot of data to this.

I am completely new to linux in any flavour. I installed ubuntu 10.4.1 64-bit on my Gateway NV59 laptop as a dual boot with Windows 7. The installation went just fine. When it comes to networking, I can connect to my home network when wired directly, wireless is another matter. I can connect wireless in windows just fine, so the card is physically fine.
My set up is as follows:
Gateway NV59 laptop with Atheros AR928X PCI-E wireless adapter
Linksys WRT54G router using WPA2 Personal and a class C address scheme (192.168.x.x)
(If anyone thinks it would be necessary to post actual hardware specs of the laptop, I can, but don't think it really necessary). I have followed the Wifi Wireless Troubleshooting Guide found at [URL].
When connecting to my network wirelessly, I click the icon in the top right, and choose "Create New Wireless Network". When I input my settings (SSID - not broadcast, and security type and key - WPA), it then states I am connected under the "Wireless Networks" section found in that menu, and shows my network name with a strong signal and a computer/monitor icon. When I double-click the icon, it tells me I am connected and that the connection is active, yet the actual wireless icon on the top bar is grey, not white, and has a red exclamation mark on it. According to the steps in the troubleshooting guide, my wireless card is recognized and installed, with a driver of ath9k.
When I run lsmod, the driver is listed, therefore loaded, and ndiswrapper is NOT listed. I have verified that the driver is communicating with the kernel. When I scan for my router, it is listed under Cell 04, with the correct SSID and hardware address. There do not appear to be multiple drivers loaded, and my wifi is NOT disabled. When I check to see if I'm associated with a router, iwconfig shows my network ssid under wlan0, with the correct hardware address listed under Cell:, yet I cannot ping my router's internal ip address. At this point, I ran ifconfig, and for some reason, my wireless card has been given a class A address of 10.42.43.1.
When I try to assign an ip address via dhcp, DHCPDISCOVER runs for a number of intervals and then tells me "No DHCPOFFERS received", yet my router is using dhcp to assign ips with a pool of 50, more than enough ips for all the hardware in my network. When I run the command "sudo invoke-rc.d networking restart", I get the statement "Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0" - not sure what that means, but doesn't sound good to me, and retrying to accquire an ip address through dhcp still does not work. If I attempt to assign an ip address within my network range manually, I first run the command "sudo ifconfig wlan0 down", then just out of curiosity to see if the interface is really down.
I run ifconfig again, and wlan0 is no longer listed, but now there is eth0 (my regular ethernet interface) with no ip address. AND another interface is listed - eth0:avahi with the same hardware address as eth0, and an address of 169.254.4.42 - this seems to be the default address the OS will assign when it cannot get one via dhcp, but I have no idea why it has shown up as eth0::avahi... Anyway, after entering the command "sudo ifconfig ip addr 192.168.x.x netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.x.255 up" with the appropriate addresses, I receive the error "addr: Unknown host".
What I have NOT tried, are the following steps:
1. Change my router to an open signal (I would prefer not to do this, but will, if it is absolutely necessary for troubleshooting)
2. Try gtk wifi, or wifi radar
3. Try booting with kernel option pci=noacpi or acpi=off (not entirely sure how to do this just yet)
4. Try wpa supplicant (not sure what this is, just noted it was in the troubleshooting guide)

View 9 Replies View Relatedthis may seem a little odd, but I used my server to install Ubuntu on to an external hard drive. (long story short, the server won't recognize any internal hard disks with any type of video card installed. The video card works just fine when installed, and it will read both CDs/DVDs and USB drives just fine, it just refuses to even notice hard disks. I'm assuming an IRQ issue, but I've tried changing them with no success.) Having installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my external 250g hard disk, I attempted to boot it from the USB drive, since the system has that option. It tells me "error: out of disk" and goes to the Grub rescue prompt. Having followed multiple threads and advice posts, including on this forum, I was unable to resolve the issue. For s'n'gs, I hooked affore mentioned external hard disk to my laptop and tested it. Boots just fine. Then hooked it back to my server to see if it would boot. Still no dice [Just a side note, no the video card is not currently installed in said server, I was testing it to see if the thing would install and operate alright before I tested it with video card installed. Only ever make one change at a time, that way if something explodes, I know what caused it.] My initial objective was to get an operating system that would boot with the video card installed. Any ideas what might be going wrong here?
View 2 Replies View RelatedLast week I installed Zoneminder so I can have some webcam security and I let it run on Mocord (motion detection record) for 24 hours just to see how it worked and run some tests. After that 24 hours I changed it to Monitor so that it wouldn't record anything and wouldn't fill up my 320 gig drive but even after I did that the webcam LED stayed on. Not sure if this is normal, I guess it is since it is still using the webcam, just not recording. I don't think. 2 nights ago I was using it to watch videos online and it was a little slow but was still good enough.
This morning I unplugged it and brought it downstairs to use it but when I opened the lid the hard drive LED was constant and the mouse was all jumpy. Anything I clicked on took a minute to register and the disk utility that I tried loading 2 days earlier looked like it was still loading. I couldn't click anything because the hard drive was running like crazy. Or processor or whatever that light is. So I held the power button, rebooted and nothing on the menu bar was loaded and the hard drive was going crazy again, still couldn't click on anything.
So I rebooted again and this time it gave me a popup before the desktop loaded:
There is a problem with the configuration server.

So I click Close and it boots to a black background with huge icons and there are obviously no drivers loaded. There's now a new error message:
GConf error: Faield to contact configuration server: the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: GetIOR faield: GDBus.Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildSignaled: Process /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 received signal 6)
All further errors shown only on terminal. And then it does nothing, all the menus say KDE. Webcam LED is still on though since Zoneminder runs as a service on Apache. It's a dual core Dell Studio 15 laptop with all the newest updates and I have 3 separate partitions on my install: /, /home, SWAP. My / partition has 2 gigs free according to KDE and my /home partition has 124 gigs free.

I have two graphic cards on my laptop, one is Intel and the other is Nvidia. There seems to be something wrong with the Intel card and I changed into the Nvidia card to boot. Then the errors occurred. The driver of the Nvidia card has not been installed. How can I start my network in command line mode? I cannot enter graphic mode now.
Fedora 14 on my laptop has randomly decided that it hates me. The system stops booting after "starting atd", right when its starting X. It "hangs" after the fedora logo, though it will reboot when I try "ctrl-alt-delete". I can see that haldaemon is failing to start, and when I boot the kernel with "selinux=0" it gives me an error message:
error while loading shared libraries: libdbus-glib-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. NetworkManager fails with same message. the .so file is in its proper directory, where it has been all along. I've tried booting into runlevels 2 and 3. No luck there either. It'll boot to the login prompt, but as soon as I under my userid the screen flashes. I managed to get the error message it was giving me before the flash: inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 503: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT` failed!
I can boot into single user mode just fine. I've checked dmesg and Xorg logs, but I honestly don't know what I'm looking for (and I imagine that those logs would be useless if I boot into runlevel 1, since the error is at higher runlevels. But I can't get the logs for those because the computer just hangs. SSH and networking are never enabled before the hang.)
I'm at a loss here. I use the machine for both school and work [and I have quite a bit of both to do today] and I've been trying to get it to boot normally for hours now. Anyone have any ideas that I could try?
I have samba network sharing working between an ubuntu box and an xp laptop. xp laptop does not need login when booting up. however, a vista laptop does not even show-discover the ubuntu machine the vista laptop you logon with a password to use when booting up. both xp and vista laptops are on the wireless LAN and the ubuntu box is on the wired LAN. internet works on all 3 So what to do with vista box to make it even see the ubuntu box? Vista laptop did discover several upnp softwares running on the ubuntu box, but does not see the ubuntu shares, etc
