General :: Ethernet Not Recognozed In BIOS?

My Atheros ar8132 is not being read by 'lspci' in Linux, or in the BIOS for the computer. It would be easy to say that it is a hardware connection fault, but I had the isuue before and it was fixed by doing an unclean shutdown. I have tried that several times, probably at the expense of some data, to no avail. This computer is not easy to take apart like others since it is a netbook. It is under warranty, but to send it in I would have to take out my new HDD and 2 GB stick of RAM which I really do not want to do

I have had this issue before, and fixed it by booting into Windows XP SP3 and pressing and holding the power button down until the computer shuts down. (e.g. "Unclean or "Illegal" or "Cold" boot.) Unfortunately, not having Windows XP SP3 on my system anymore, I have to do this in Ubuntu. I have tried several times, and it is clearly not working. I don't want to try too many times more for fear of damaging my ext4 file system.
I looked for this issue on Google and found only driver problems, not device problems. There is no Ethernet option in the BIOS, except for the Network Boot, which should always show the device whether its in use or not. Is it silly to ask if Windows in a VM in an unclean shutdown may solve the problem? The driver for the device is currently supported by the kernel out of the box:

I am basically wanting to use my Ubuntu 10.10 computer as a router. Note: Before you say just get a router please note that I am poor/cheap. I have two ethernet connections and one wireless connection on my netbook. I want to share the internet connection that is going into one of the ethernet cards through the other ethernet card and the wireless card.
DSL-->1sr Eth --> 2nd Eth (currently works)
DSL-->1sr Eth --> Wireless Card (Adhoc) <--(connects with limited connectivity AKA no internet)
The 2nd Ethernet card already has working internet, but when I connect to the Wireless card (through an Adhoc network), it cannot get an IP (I believe).

My Setup: Dell Laptop (BIOS allows boot from USB) - Vista 32 bit installed, 4 GB memory
External 500 GB HDD (iOmega) - Partitioned as follows:
NTFS: 50 GB
/boot: 1 GB
below two on one logical volume:
swap: 5 GB
/: rest ~ 440 GBI installed Oracle Enterprise Linux on the external HDD.
Did not install the Grub bootloader as I don't really want a startup boot option. The way I was planning to make it work was: When USB HDD connected and laptop powered up, it'll boot to the Oracle Linux. When the USB drive is not connected and laptop powered up, it'll boot to Vista. When I boot with the USB HDD connected, nothing happens. I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. The USB HDD light comes on though. Is the above plan possible, or do I have to have a Boot loader installed?
If I have to have a boot loader installed, how can I just install the bootloader and not have to reinstall Linux on the HDD. The Linux drive is currently empty, so I'm open to any good suggestions to partitioning it. I want to keep a small amount of NTFS space on that drive to store some windows files and documents that I can carry around. The rest 450 GB is open for Linux. And I Plan to install Oracle Database and Apps on Linux (which takes about 350 GB of space).

I want to go back to Windows. However I can't uninstall Ubuntu since I can't boot up from CD nor USB no matter how I change the BIOS setting. I chose CD or USB but it will go straight to Ubuntu. How can I get rid of it without taking out the hard drive and have it formatted from another computer.

I bought a ChemBook laptop which I have installed Ubuntu Linux on. It has an AMI BIOS. There is a password on the BIOS so I can not change its configuration. The laptop does not have a 3.5inch floppy. How do I reset or remove the BIOS password so I can access it and make my own changes and set up my own password?

is there a way to retrieve the processor model without taking information from bios? I don't know which processor is really mounted. I want to set up the right processor timing, but I don't know the processor type. Every time I change the timing for the processor in BIOS another processor type is determined (I should be an Athlon XP +1500, I think, but I don't know really).
I think with less /proc/cpuinfo the results depends on the timing that is set in bios. So could you tell me how I can find out which processor is really mounted?

Anyone here knows the OpenSuse install CD runthrough? I am using DELL pc's, and remember installing Linux as being a few almost basic steps on my self assembled clone pc's in my youth. Now, over ten years later I want to redo that and return to my old playground. I am using after over 12 years administering MS stuff again applications running on unix (solaris) at my work. Its like homecoming but in a difficult way, I am brainwashed and not really into unix anymore. So... lets install linux again at home. Returning to my favorite Suse distribution in the old days (who knows why).
I went through the installation (Opensuse11) simple, standard to start with, so mainly next (ACPI disabled). Rebooted... and the pc finds no recognized bootable HDD. OK, well, try again, other HDD to be sure, results in the same. Set manually the root partition as active. No go, I feel as a newbie again. What happened to me in those last years? Tried to do it also with a fedora distri - same outcome. When plugging these HDD in another recent (DELL) pc, it also does not recognize the HDD as bootable. Both disks have been part of a system before and functioned; until I changed this system for this other purpose. Probably i am missing something basic??

I am trying to flash my bios but they only supply an exe or a floppy image. obviosly I am not running windows to run the exe and I dont have a floppy drive. So I have been trying to copy the floppy image to a cd with little success.Size of boot image is 2884 sectors -> genisoimage: Error - boot image 'F1B.IMG' has not an allowable size.The way I understand it thats 4 sectors over the 1.44Mb floppy size? Is there a way I continue anyway? Seeing that I will be putting it on a cd I cant see that the size is going to matter

I dual booted my system with Linux Mint on a Windows 7 operating platform. I later thought it would be better to use Ubunta as I am a newbie to the system and there is more help available. I tried to uninstall Linux Mint through Windows but I am not sure I did. I then installed Ubunta from a CD and the whole system crashed. I am now unable to boot beyond the BIOS screen and am using Ubunta CD to access the internet. I would be grateful if you could shed any light on what has happened. Unfortunately I have no separate boot up disc.

I recently dumped XP and installed Fedora 14. Since then I have been unable to access the BIOS Setup Screen.The Laptop is Fuitzu Siemans D Series 8820, The BIOS version is not in the manual. wouldn't have thought Fedora could write to the BIOS.Perhaps it is special key presses causing the problem.I am impressed with Fedora 14.

I am trying to install ununtu 10.04 but it fails every time with a message which flashes on and off with a message - mp bios bug no dhcp client installed at least I think that is what it says, it is on and off so fast. I have used Ubuntu for around three months but I also have to use windows for my work and this first started when I upgraded to win 7 and the pc gradually slowed down and became impossible to use. It also refuses to install. I suspect that I probably picked up a bug during installation of win 7 and new memory. I am having to type this on my wife's laptop.

I am working on development of an TOS that runs in Protected Mode. I am required to switch it from text mode to graphics mode. Everywhere I google I get only one solution set AX to 0013h and call INT 10 and easily the VGA Graphics Mode is set.
I am working in protected mode and hence cannot use INT 10. Can someone please guide me? I came across a post where it was said that this can be done by setting the VGA registers, but I could not understand much from the link provided in the post on how to implement it.

I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard for my desktop. I've chosen a model and I've read some reviews on it. A couple of the reviews talk about BIOS updating/flashing and stuff like that. As a moderate hardware guy (I've built computers, but only know the basics of hardware and how they work together) running Linux, should I worry about this. I've never updated/flashed my current mobo's BIOS
So are all these reviews specific to Windows users? I've never had much driver issues in Linux (other than ATI graphics cards), nor have I had to update BIOS.

I have a bit of a weird problem, I have updated the BIOS for my motherboard (MSI K9A2 Platinum V2) to version 1.B which updates the CPU AGESA code. After the update I was unable to properly shut down linux (gentoo linux 64 bit, kernel 2.6.34, kde 4.4), when I try to do a shut down (tried it from kde and from the command line as well with the same result) the computer shuts down but then it starts up again, only this time the keyboard doesn't work. I think that somehow, the way the pc shuts down has changed (maybe linux is sending the wrong commands in order to shut down) because from windows 7 I can shut down the pc properly.
I have tried to recompile the kernel (I thought that maybe I forgot to add support for some ACPI, APM or CPU options that could affect the shut down procedure) but with no luck.

I installed a Raid 2+0 a couple of days ago with windows 7, and everything was working fine until today. I left my computer for a couple of hours and when i came back all i see is this black screen with a blinking cursor, then i tried everything on the bios but every time i tried to boot it kept stuck there, right after the bios POST.Then i tried changing the SATA ports, that was something that fixed similar problems on my old Mobo, but this is strange because this mobo has 1 week, and the HD's (2x seagate 500gb) have 2 days, so they should be fine.
Then i tried with my ubuntu lucid lynx live cd, it has saved my life many times, it always works flawlessly and i thought i could use it to restore the boot files, but i was very surprised when it failed as well, it pops a message saying something like "invalid user pwsuid "user: unknown"{0}". Tried it many times with no luck, only that same message...Now i managed to boot from a "slitaz" linux dist. thats about 30mb, it has many useful tools.I can see the partitions/HD's on the Gparted and mount applications, but i still i havent managed to mount the raid i had on my Windows 7 install, im a bit scared of losing data, and i dont even know how to do it.Is there any way to fix thisrom the slitaz live cd?Maybe i could mount the Raid and then restore the Boot files from the slitaz live cd? I have a windows image i could use on the Raid, and i could copy the image files to a partition, make it primary, active and bootable...I really dont know, maybe that wont help either because the ubuntu live cd couldnt boot, i really dont know what whats going on and what could be the cause of this... maybe a worm/virus

I checked my system bios, ECC was not enabled because, when I setup mobo I selected system defaults instead of doing them manually. So I enabled them.
The message has not gone away.
I looked up the message and it shows in bug list.
